I think QF are shooting themselves in the foot, and this marks the beginning of the end of their stance in the long haul market out of Australia.
For EK to go in to partnership with a loss-making competitor tells me that they're trying remove said competition in the long run. It's just an opportunity for EK to further increase their yields out of Australia and potentially lift prices once the competition is gone.
Also, maintaining frequent flyer status with QF aside, why would anyone want to fly QF to DXB and then change to an EK flight to the majority of European destinations on offer, when you can fly EK the whole way through?
Also, say goodbye to seeing the QF A380 on the extremely lucrative SYD-SIN route. I bet SQ are laughing.
