Depends on country, I think. Anyway, as far as German register is concerned, and as stated above already, deleted registrations are re-used when required or requested. Here are a few examples:

D-ABYM was first used in the 1970’s for this very LH 747-200, later re-used for a 2012-delivered 748-8I.

D-ABUA is a Condor 767-300 but was used for a Lufthansa 707-300 before.

Hapag-Lloyd (TUIfly) also re-used registrations, originally a 727-100 was registered D-AHLL, it was later re-used on a 737-800.

And so on...
