It's a good question.

The visor was there so as maintain the aerodynamic flow, when the nose was up/extended during supersonic flight. If you look at the pictures posted above, the cockpit windows are quite flat to the relative air flow.
They were designed like this so the pilots could have good visibility for flying the approach and landing. Having a visor that could slide in and out of position helped as a solution for both of those stages of flight.
