The Australian government found it was two expensive to run TAA & Qantas independently. A decision was made to merge the two and float the entire business by selling 100% of the shares to Australians. Prior to the merger a decision was made to rebrand TAA and on the 4th of August 1986 the airline became Australian Airlines. IATA code Tango November. TN (Australian Airlines) wore the Aussie colours of green & gold stripes with navy blue belly and a blue Kangaroo getting everyone ready for the merger for a short time only. By 1992 the merger happened. All 727's where already retired prior to the merger and Qantas received a fleet of 737-300's and 737-400's and 4 x A300B4's for it's first domestic fleet. It was all Qantas (QF) by 1993
