Best way to tell the difference between the '53 and '54 (besides the engine) is the longer tailpipes on the '54. The short pipes on the first version sooted up the rear of the car, so they lengthened them. Also, the '53 only came in Polo White, with red interior. The pictured car is a '54 in the same color scheme, but 6 other colors were available.
