Question Would you like more factory primer-colour models?

I’m pleased with my 3 attached 1/400th models in factory primer colours (FPC), especially the Xian Y-20 Kunpeng. I now prefer 1/500th as they take up less space, but I’ve only got one FPC, the 747 Dreamlifter.

Would you like to see more FPCs?
Or is it just an excuse for manufacturers to add another livery to the same mould?
I think it adds an interesting dimension to my collection, especially as we have quite a few interesting aircraft making their first flights recently and in the near future, like the 777-9.
It seems ironic that the only 737 MAX that I’ve got is in green primer, especially after seeing all the sad photos of those green tubes piling up at Renton.

Do you know of any other 1/500th FPCs?
The only other one I know of is the attached A380, but it’s hardly a prototype anymore.

What FPCs would you like to see next?
I’d like to see something that is currently at the prototype/first flight stage like the 777-9.
I’d be interested in the attached Ilyushin Il-112V as I like military planes, and love Russian ones. An FPC Irkut MS-21 would be good to see, but is it just another Comac C919?
(The S in MS-21 stands for Samoyot, meaning aeroplane, but in the Cyrillic alphabet is written Самолет, hence MC-21; people started accidentally reading it as our alphabet, so it’s becoming MC-21 in English too, which is confusing because Samoyot doesn’t begin with a C, if that makes any sense).

It would be really cool to see the CRAIC CR929, built by UAC and COMAC to compete with Dreamliner-sized airliners. I think the first wing and fuselage sections are currently being built, but I haven’t heard of any of these planes appearing as die-cast models yet.
Have you heard of any of these models being made, especially in 1/500th?

Noooo! I factor in the high cost of the models I buy with the accurate painted and printed airline livery applied by the manufacturer. I am an airline historian and like displaying my models to show different airline liveries. I would never pay good money for a model just finished in primer. I view this as a cheap way manufacturers try to sell more models without having to do any airline livery research or pad printing set up -just spray it in a yukky green primer!

If a model were just spray-painted in primer alone, I doubt that anyone would buy them.
But looking at the attached photos of the original planes compared with the models, it looks as though as much research and pad-printing has gone into these as any other livery, even down to the different shades of zinc-coloured lacquer on different sections. I can remember watching first roll-out of several types on TV or the internet, so it’s like having a souvenir of any other anniversary livery.
These were historic occasions, which is why I’d also like to see some of the newer Russian and Chinese types done this way too. We don’t usually get to see this part of the production process that often, so it’s a good snapshot of the roll-out ceremony.
In fact perhaps a diorama isn’t complete without a prototype, and maybe the next manufacturer’s idea will be to produce planes being scrapped in their graveyard livery too!

Hi David UK. there are more primer models in 500 scale. done by Netmodels.
They did 3 beautiful A380s in primer colors. the white tail that you pictured, plus one with an Airbus A380 tail, and one with SIA tail. I didn't get the Airbus tail, for some reason, I don't like house color models...

I would probably get other primer models if they are released. I am fascinated with models that tell a particular story or moment in aviation history, so I am a fan of hybrid color models, primer models and models featuring stickers or special markings.

I agree with you regarding the preference of 1/500 scale. it is a real space saver. I couldn't have +2000 models in 400 scale as I do in 500. hehehe
