Default Does your collection have a theme?

Hey. Please forgive me if this thread has already been done, but I'm curious if many people on here have a theme to their collection? I know WestjetterO does (YYZ!), but was wondering if most collectors do, or if you just collect whatever releases appeal or 'look good'?

Do you collect according to "what aircraft you've been in" (as is on one thread currently)? Do you collect one type only? One airline only? carriers serving one airport only?

This is a very simple question, with a complex answer...

First collection them was:
- Liveries and planes that I flew...

Then I started collecting Brazilian models, when Varig´s MD11 on Star Alliance livery landed, I decided to collect Star Alliance liveries models as well... jumping into Alliance (Skyteam and One world) themes was a matter of time...

Sports theme idea came just after the World Cup Varig´s arrived, so every national carrier that were hosting an World Cup, Olympic games joined as well... Other sports as NBA, NHL and soccer came naturally...

Collorfull models as Southwest´s, NOK, Continental Peter Max, was included wih sponsored aircrafts...

Airlines with same livery and different tails as PIA´s , Air India Express and BA World Tails.

Last year I decided to include every PAN AM (Blue Globe tail) on the fleet... and as soon as i get most of Pan Ams I will start with Braniff´s...

As you can see, i was caugh by the virus!!!

My theme: If I like it, I buy it

When I started collecting a few years ago I was only collecting 1:400 scale models of current US Airlines, all aircraft types. I then branched out to include European Airlines and eventually started collecting a few African and Middle Eastern and then Australian and Asian Airlines. Once I started collecting in 1:200, everything changed. Now my theme is whatever I like, in both 1:400 and 1:200, and it is certainly more expensive. I have 250+ models ranging from aircraft/airlines from the 1960's all the way to the modern liveries and aircraft we see today. I do have a small collection with my overall collection of specific planes I've traveled on. I know many collectors like to stick to that theme!

Cheers,

A.

Yes the underlying theme is negative bank balances, overdraft and ultimate bankruptcy lol

No seriously, my theme is widebodied, A380s, B744s, B773ERs and A346s. Slowly trying to get rid of A332s, and baby Airbuses.

Why yes it does . Mine is Toronto Pearson International Airport- CYYZ. If it flies here on a regular basis, I will buy a 400 scale version of it. Which will be featured in my Terminal 1/Runway 24L build.

EDIT: I just noticed I was mentioned in Post #1.

Interesting responses! As I thought, its hard to maintain a totally disciplined approach to limiting your collection to a theme!

I started off my collection getting whatever 1:400 GJs I fancied. When the collection got a bit big I thought I'd restrict it to those that I've seen personally. Then my focus changed to european aircraft in 1:200...(too expensive to continue!)

Finally...I've settled on 1:400 aircraft that serve LHR,my favourite airport, mostly PHX 777s,747s,A330s and A320s-and GJ 767,757 and 737.My display room has a Heathrow theme to it with Europe Jepp Charts on the walls and photos of EGLL, ILS charts and Jepp ground Charts on the shelves so it all kind of fits quite well...

Here are my collecting priorities:
1 Canadian aircraft
2 Aircraft that would fit on my model airport
3 Aircraft with significance to me (aircraft I have flown on)
4 If it just is special or neat.

And of course, all of this depends on whether or not my wallet likes them!

There are 2 conditions to my collecting
1: The model should be realistically based at my airport (which is based in the US) i.e US regionals, EU, Mid-East, Africa, Asia widebodies (as in, I would not have a UAL CRJ and an AF F100 in the same place)
2:Planes I have flown on

It Gets Expensive If You Don't Have A Focus.
I Did Have Several Themes But It's A Bit Hodge Podge.

Mostly Pre 1999 Liveries. You Know The Old Stuff When Liveries Were Actually Nice.
Canadiana
Legacy International Carriers.
Obscure Airlines (But Only The Ones I Like)
Fleet Building
What I've Flown On
What Appeals To Me

I'd Start Collecting Again If You Can Build Buffalo's Entire Fleet!

My collecting habits break out into a roughly 4 collections.
From largest to smallest:

• Mostly current US carriers:
- Delta
- Northwest
- Continental
- United
- American/American Eagle

• 747s from around the world, pax and cargo (mostly cargo)

• Star Alliance

• Special livery/what ever else appeals to me

Kind of a mish-mosh, but it keeps it interesting—and helps fuel the economy.

OK, i think this is a most difficult question for everyone here.

when I bought the first 1:400 model, the guy who sold it to me ask me : have you thought about which theme will you collect?

'please give yourself a theme, or you will find hard to pull out.' he told me.

At that time, I give myself the first theme that collect each kind plane. But I find it was so hard to do it after I got several models. because some aircrafts are too small and some aircrafts are too old that I don't like very much.

I'm from Shanghai, when I see the MU and FM models, I can not refuse it! So, my second theme is all the airline models in Shanghai.

After that, I draw a 1:400 airport for myself, and I start to collect kinds of airways for real effect.

Also, I like KA, ANA too......and sometime think to see much Alliance in a airport........also find some color models are so beautiful...........

So, whick is my true theme? the only thing I can said now is: I sank in.........

haha, that reminds me that the first time I used to said that I'll only collect one aircraft type per airlines other than the ones from Indonesia, but now I actually have like two (or more) types of aircraft for each airlines lately, because of my posting in Kenya, i also begin to take interest in airlines from East, Central, and West Africa. Good thing there's only few models released in their liveries

I think we need a very strong resolution and self control if we really want to stick to a specific theme in this hobby (and save our wallet from further plundering )

When I started I don't even have a theme. No wonder my collection is a bit confusing but after my 3rd purchasefinally decide my theme. This way I cannot overspend and still my collection has all the variety of airlines. But the best part is I started and still love the 1:400 scale.

I started my 1/400 collection with the aim of having a fair representation of world air travel past and present. Wide enough to buy too much models, but restrictive enough to keep me from getting a whole fleet of the same airline just because I like its livery.
Also :
- everything Air France
- almost everything french
- Latin american airlines (one of each type operated by national carriers, at least one of each carrier).

And some militaries too, without any real focus.

when i first started collecting 1/200, i collected everything i liked. but after running out of room, i had to narrow my criteria. so after changing my criteria several times, i am now sticking to, (or trying to lol!)

klm models as my prime criteria. i have over 20 models so far.
ana models
delta widget models
british liveries, b.a, b.cal. boac. etc.
special liveries, sia tropical, hibiscus, qantasf1 etc.

here are a couple of pics of my collection which i keep at work, and bear out the above. and my pre-order list contains same. and i still have more models in boxes not displayed!

My theme is US Airlines from the period 1940-1980 split into the following categories:
  • Trunk Carriers (AA, EA, TW, UA, DL, BN, NA, NE, CO, CA, NW, WA)
  • Local Service Airlines (North Central, Frontier, Piedmont etc)
  • Intra-State Airlines (PSA, Air Cal, Southwest, Air Florida)
  • Supplementals (ONA, Trans Int, Flying Tigers etc)
I want to show the history of US aviation in the period and have over 200 models at present. Additionally a few of the new entrants from the early 80s dereg days have slipped in (like PeoplExpress, Midway, Northeastern) and a couple of 80s trunks too (AA, DL, EA 757s and AA, UA, DL 767s).

I also did start a small UK classics collection so that I could get a few Tridents, Comets, Brittanias, One-Eleven 500s etc) and have about 12 of them so far.

There isn't a single 777, 737NG in my collection and only two airbuses (a UA A320 and a PA A300).

I'm a 1/400 collector of mostly military, with the exception of a couple of Playboy jets for the troops, and 9 IL-76s plus 5 An-124s.

I got started in the 1/400 because I wanted C-17s, which Iam at 28 with 18 C-5s.

If its military, I'll take it.

For this month, I have 4 C-130s and 1 VC-10

My main theme has been "aircraft I've flown on," constituting a full 35% of my collection. Then I've done fleet-building on current DL, AA, and AF, picked up a few models that have intrigued me over the years at JFK (DL Song, B6 10th Anniversary, 4 freighters, the BA and AF concordes that interrupted my grammar school classes back in the day). I also have a thing for the 757wl, so I got that in legacy carriers' current schemes. The goal moving forward would be to more stringently restrict my purchases to the planes I've flown on; I've been much better at that in the last year or so.

Got started when my wife bought me the Gemini Aloha "Flower Power" 732 for my birthday several years ago. Since then, I've concentrated my collection on Hawaii/Polynesia/Oceana.

Of course, there are exeptions. We're big Disneyland fans, so I've got all of those Gemini planes (and we've got those sitting in the china cabinet with our other Disneyland collectibles), along with the Donald Duck PSA 727.

I've also collected a few military planes that I think are interesting. I'll keep my fingers crossed for future P-8s or AEW&Cs.

well, I started just in September with no specific goal, just a bet with a friend that I would have 1000 models a year after. I'm now on a few goals:
- at least 1 model from every airline in the world (1200 to go lol)
- special livery in 1/400 and 1/200
- Portuguese airlines (anyone has the Herpa Premium "Algarve"? for sale?)
- Inflight 200 and Gemini 200 models
- Never buy full price except for some rare models

Mine does ... sort of. I'm trying to collect a CX and SQ fleet, with a few other purchases I make on the side if I like the model. So basically, it's anything I feel like at the time.

My collection has three basic themes:

1 - Airlines and aircraft types (DC-9 or larger) which currently or historically served IND in regular scheduled service or on charters, from the mid-1970s to present day. Though turboprops and RJs are a major part of the IND scene, I don't have much of an interest in them.

2 - At least one example of each type of aircraft in the fleet of each major US carrier

3 - Anything else I find interesting from a personal standpoint

Since I am building a replica of LAX, I try to collect mostly what you would see there. There are a few exceptions, however. "My LAX" is a modified version but still over 184 square feet!

My theme is easy...only stuff I have flown on. Makes it easy to collect..! Even so, this theme goes back 30 years or so.

My criteria consists of four theme's.

1/ Main interest is Northwest & DELTA's history, Plus airlines absorbed by them,

2/ Aircraft worked on, this is finished all but one model.

3/ G- Registered Aircraft.

4/ Aircraft flown on, On going.

I was wondering if anyone just collects 747s. If so and your collection is large put up some pics. She will always be the Queen of the skies in my book.

All of my 1:400 aircraft are Gemini jets and are all airlines and aircraft that service Sydney.

So far I have:
Fed Ex MD11
Qantas A380
Qantas 747
United Airlines 747

Hoping to buy more in the near future!!!!
