Default Newbie to hobby looking for advice and guidance

Hi everyone,

I'm new here at DA.C, and also am new to diecast aircraft models. I'm an aero-mechanical engineering student, and stumbled upon the forum when researching some information about a few aircraft for personal interest.

I'm not necessarily a hardcore collector (at least not yet), but do like the idea and certainly want to get a few models just now... more may follow. After a little research and thought, I decided to opt for 1:400 scale. I've tried searching for online stores and bought a model or two already, however I thought it might be worth asking seasoned collectors here for their thoughts.

So, basically I want to ask if anyone can reccommend any good online retailers for diecast aircraft models (that ship to the UK)? Also, which of the model manufacturers would you reccomend? So far I've bought a Gemini Jets model, which to my untrained eye appears to be very good quality.

Thanks in advance for your help, and I apologise if there is a similar thread on the forum already.

R

The advice given so far is appropriate if you live in the US. Shipping costs to the UK may make something else more attractive, I don't know.

In the U.S. My favorites are Jetway models, Skys the Limit, and Jet Collector. Just Plane Fun is ok, and Adam Jets is good but expensive. Nick has the best customer service, he answers the phone!!

Is Dutch Telesale still around? They were pretty good. So is Aviation Center Berlin. There are also a couple of sites in the UK, if postage is a bugger.

All manufactures do a good job on some aircraft types and bad job on others.

Here is a pretty useful thread for reference:

Okay, thanks guys.

@ Cathay Pacific B-HKD: Thanks a lot for that. I really should have had a look around the forum first. I was too tired after work and everything else I had to sort out yesterday evening to take the time to do that. But excuses aside that link was very helpful, and I will have good read of it again when I get home this evening. Thanks very much!

The next step I suppose is to consider what direction I want to take my collection in! So far I have one widebody and one regional jet. I know people collect, for example, wide or narrow bodies, but what's the opinions on collecting, say, a specific airline's fleet, or re-creating a particular airport (i.e. the usual scheduled aircraft operating at/from a particular airport) in miniature?

As I am new to this hobby, but very interested in it, any advice and guidance anyone could offer would be great!

Thanks.

AS you are in the UK the best retailers in my opinion are:- www.aviationretaildirect.co.uk in Hillingdon and www.jetspro.net based in Kent. Both are excellent sites and service and delivery are first class. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you LHOEHB, you're actually the first one to welcome me. Though I'm by no means implying that anyone else didn't do it intentionally of course.

I have used www.aviationretaildirect.co.uk already, for the couple of models that I have purchased so far (Emirates 777 - because I flew on one just last month - and BAE 146-300 - because they (and the RJs) are the focus of my project at work at the moment). I found their range to be very good (though I am not familiar with any other sites for comparison), and delivery was within the expected timeframe. I had thought I might use them again, unless anywhere better was suggested.

Thanks for your help.

As for what to collect: it's of course up to you. I collect things I've flown on. Others collect things that visit a certain airport they'd like to make a model of. Others build fleets of certain airlines. Others are nuts and buy everything.

As an aero student, maybe you'll have some other criteria - perhaps also get some classics, to show how technology has evolved over the decades.

Get what you like, but it's good to develop some theme, or else you'll be overwhelmed or bankrupt.

oh, and welcome.

I think ARD has a good reputation over there. One thing you'll quickly learn is that retail stores tend to not have models which were released years ago. But as you build up a collection, you'll want some of those. Ebay helps fill these gaps, as does the trading section of this forum, and collection sales at Air Paradigm (US). Just watch out for shipping costs, wherever you buy. And don't pay ridiculous prices from certain Hong Kong based ebay traders. Just because a model is listed for $60 by one of them, doesn't mean you can't get it for $20 if you wait. On older releases, patience is key, or else you'll overpay.

Ooh! That's an idea that I actually hadn't thought of, and like quite a lot. Also with strong family background in aviation (pilots and cabin crew mostly), I've been considering getting some of the aircraft that my family (mostly my mum) flew on. The only problem is that while BA 747s that my father currently flies might be easy to find, Loganair and Air Anglia Jetstream 31s and Dash-8s that my mum worked on way back when are not...

Aye, the usual internet shopping tips and advice basically. I'll be sure to watch out. Thanks.

I trust that you've found the model database on here? It will tell you what is, and what is not, possible to find.

Hi Mate and welcome.
If you check the model database, it will tell you if a model is for sale. Very handy!
Have a good time

Air Paradigm and Jetway are the best overseas sellers I've ever dealt with and are now my mainstream suppliers.
I rarely buy within Australia nowdays except for Aeroclassics models.

Virginfans on ebay is also very good.
