Smile Which 1:400 model maker do you like best?

I currently only collect 1:400 Gemini Jets and I think they are fantastic. I want to venture out and purchase models from other makers (more selection) but I do not know who is good and who is not. I do not like models with plastic wings so what do you guys recommend? Only 1:400 scale!

Thanks!

Phoenix, Aeroclassics and JC Wings should cater for your needs in my opinion.

I heard either Phoenix or Dragon have plastic wings? True? Which models are more accurate?

Dragon have plastic wings, phoenix dont. Accuracy varies model to model. Phoenix's 777-300 is the best of all the manufacturers in my opinion.

Dragon Wings have plastic wings, but don't let that fool you. Dragon Wings have the best 747s - despite its plastic wings, their mould is simply superb.

I don't think you can say specifically that one manufacturer is better than the other. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Phoenix's better moulds are their 777s, 787s and A380s; Herpa have brilliant A330/A340s, Gemini Jets have great 777s, Dragon Wings have nice 747s ... it all depends on what type of aircraft you want to buy.

Gemini Jets first, then Phoenix. But sometimes it depends on the a/c.

Depends on what you collect! I mainly collect classic airline so my first choice is Aeroclassics, they have the very best 707-mould (and the only 707-mould which is acceptable for me), besites they have really good moulds of DC-7, DC-8, DC-9, DC-10, 727, BAC 1-11 and others. Gemini Jets has also very good mould, but their 707-mould is crap, from Dragon I only like their 727.
From the other manufactures I don't have very much, only a few Phoenix Tu-154 und the only JC Wings I have are IL-86, but these are really stunning!

Dragon has goods Md-11 and Tristar as well (besides their 727 and Md-8X already posted). Phoenix excellent 777... JC wings excellent props (F50, SAAB340), and smaller planes as ERJ145, CRJ200, F100...
I would say that really depend on what are you looking for....

Herpa has a pretty good mould in 1/400 of the 330/340.

I LOVE Gemini Jets. Most of my 1:400 models are GJ. The quality and detail can't be beat and I will pay the extra costs for them. However, the only "problem" is that the gears don't actually roll. I like Phoenix but the wings on the A380's are slightly exaggerated. Herpa is good but their landing gear is rubbish, so fragile and stringy. JC Wings are pretty good too.

I HATE Dragon Wings. Not only because of their plastic, fragile wings and tail but because the cockpit windows are so wrong and ugly. Also their colours can be way off too. (Was going to buy an Etihad 777-300 last week but changed my mind as the plane was almost a pearl white instead of the usual golden brown) How do you get those things wrong? The moulds are pretty good though. (Maybe "hate" is a strong word?)

No, mate they don't. I have a Herpa Etihad A380 with metal wings. Just the gears on the Herpa aren't good.

You can always take the radical approach of looking at a pic, deciding if you like it or not, then buy it if you like it. I know it sounds crazy, but a few of us on here actually do that.

That can still be risky at times, for instance with the last 721 i fell in love with from a certain manufacturer

Depends on your choices and preference. PHX makes more asian and chinese airliners, while GJ makes more from the western world. For DW I suggest you their B747s. For PHX, B777, A320, A330, A380, for GJ A340, A320, A330, B747.

Buy 'em all, I say.

I do like Aeroclassics for the rare and unusual, and the price always seems right.

BTW, is Dragon still making aircraft models?

You could try jetwaymodels.com for some really good prices, also you could try airlinemuseum.com and airparadigm.com...

Yes DW is still making models, but at a slower rate. They also recently released some chinese liveries and an Air Asia X A340-300, which I have been hunting for

I still have some DW models, but Gemini is the best for most of the models. Phoenix I like the best for their A380 and B787 an B777 models. JC-Wings I like for the small prop models like the F-50 and the Saab-340 (with smaller wheels).

You can try the following sites, they are (at least for me) some of the best I've dealt with.
Jetway Models, Gemini Jets, Dragon Wings, AeroClassics, Herpa Wings, Starjets, Jet-X
Air Paradigm
jetcollectors.com
They've got some pretty good prices, nice selection of models and if you're lucky enough, they sometimes got some great deals and you can score nice models for low prices.

Good luck!

Phoenix has made me one happy collector in the past year! Great 777's and 747's! Gemini Jets have great offerings as well. Rolling gears from both manufacturers make these two my absolute favorites!
keep up the great work Phoenix and Gemini Jets!
