Default 1:400 Landing gear conversion kits

Does anyone make 1:400 landing gear conversion kits? The landing gear on GJ is terrible compared to PHX with rolling gear and rubber tyres. Why cant GJ do the same thing? Also do some of the new AC models come with rolling gear and rubber tyres?

I really don't see the purpose of producing 1:400 models with rolling/rubber tires since these models aren't supposed to be like Matchbox cars so you can play with them on the kitchen floor while Mommy cooks dinner. After all, they're MODELS, not TOYS. But whatever....this hobby seems to be changing demographics.

HOWEVER, to actually answer your question, no, there are no conversion kits available for landing gear. GJ does produce some models with rolling wheels and all, but they are only on certain molds (i.e. BAe 146, CRJ-700/900). The same applies for AC. Some molds have rolling tires, such as the F-28, A300, BAC 1-11, others do not.

The rolling rubber tires will make more sense when the nano jet engines and RC movable wing tail and flaps are introduced.

Why, THANK YOU for your insight ASJ!!! Jesus!! I was refering to realism. The phoenix models have more detailed landing gear, and thats what I meant. The point was not to roll them on the floor while making airplane sounds!!

I too like the Rolling Tyres idea - makes it look that more realistic if its done right. A conversion kit would be delicate but would overall enhance the look of the model.

If anyone was going to play with them on the kitchen floor I think they will be quickly dissapointed when the inevitable gear collapse occurs or in AC case - they're tyres fall off!!! haha

I wonder if something more detailed could be produced using photo etching (is that what that process is called) ? .... perhaps everything but the wheels themselves ?

Casting is about the only way to get 3D realism. I've worked with photo etching, and it only works on thin brass or copper sheeting. You'd have to stack a lot of sheets to get the effect, and it'll be impractical and expensive.

do you really think ANYONE who loves aviation this much to be on a whole forum about it is gonna buy a model plane just to roll it around on a dirty kitchen floor acting like a 2 year old making fake little airplane noises!

Don't forget Clearance Delivery, Ground, and then eventually Tower.....

Then you have to emulate the Pilot when you're at Cruise...(usually around the dining room area)...

Here's another one.

The original model had bare metal propellers with JCW's funky landing gears.

As you know, all those parts of an 1/400 F50 are pretty small....

The nose landing gear has been modified to be steeable.

It's not so good though,...

Hope you all would enjoy!

Don't be ridiculous. You think I'm going to risk mommy tripping up and spilling dinner over my best models? I use the dining room floor to play with them.

But seriously whilst I agree to some extent about your point of view, I do like the rolling gears just for an added detail, similarly to having that extra tiny decal or antenna that other models do not have, that's all.

As interesting and cool as it is to modify the gear of these models, is it something most collectors are going to be able to do themselves? Or will they have to send them to someone like Aki who has the expertise and talent to do this for you, and would it be worth the cost? Me, I enjoy my models just as they are, and the extra doo dads that others tack on are good for them, not so much for me. Excellent work, though.

I have followed the precision models thread closely. I think aki's 1/400 modifications are terrific, and being a frustrated airliner modeler myself, I have particular interest in tweaking 1/400 models. The ANA 747s reaching for the runway with everything hanging out are stellar, but over budget for me. This hobby continues to evolve... Later, Doug

So many pix which show the mods in progress can be checked at another forum, Airlinebuzz and all that I can find in DAC is the following.
