We all collect planes and most of us have already a ton of planes.
But how do you collect them?
Which is the logic behind your collection? Do you only collect B747-200, or do you collect from 1 country only ...
Post here the story BEHIND your collection of now.
Mine is this:
First I started with collecting all the models that were marked as 'Limited' but I saw that those were too much and there was no logic behind the collection. So now I have sold a bunch of them, and now I'm focused on Belgian (Because I live in Belgium) and Spanish (I am Spanish) airplanes. This planes are all the scales and all the manufacturers (no schabak and no plastic planes). Also special liveries like Tropical/Peter Max ... Attract me.

Anyway, my collection, To Limit going mad, and over doing it,I collect four theme,s Model,s of aircraft I have Flown On: To date I need Three to complete, They are CAL AIR DC10-10, Witch I am having a custom job done in 1:200 scale, ICELAND AIR 757-200 in the old light blue, and a HERALD in BIA but orange & black stripe,s these will be custom made to. Model,s of aircraft I have worked on: This, part of my collection, is complete, bar one model, big bird Boeing 747-200 cargo British airway,s red tail, Main Interest is NORTHWEST Airlines: I am very interested in it,s history, Plus my brother has worked for them, for Twenty Year,s since he moved to America, Minneapolis / St Paul there main base, have about fifty 1:400 scale model,s so far, I also have model,s of other aircraft,witch made up Northwest over the year,s IE Southern, North Central,Bonaza, Republic, Airwest,later Huge,s airwest. Behind my collection is a wall composed of sheetrock/gypsumboard and 2x4 framing. There is some plumbing in the wall, as it is shared with a guest bath. Our plumber said it was a miracle I didn't drill into any of the assorted pipes when hanging my shelves.

Originally, I intended to start collecting models of aircrafts I have flown on. But its been too long to remember them all, and I cannot find all of them in 1:400 scale. After I had seen some shops with their models on display, couldn't stand having only a handful displayed if I decide to put them in a shelf.
So plan B was to buy models of Star Alliance members. Was happy doing this until I bought a few DW Varig. You see, I was very naive and didn't know much about the history of these alliances. After I bought the Varigs, I found out the alliances only started in the 90's, hence it would limit my collection again.
Thought about focusing solely on B747s, and other widebodies...but then it could be a little too much specially with airlines I have no attachment to.
Not sure what to do, I looked at my current collection and found I have a collection of certain airlines more than others. So then I decided to put together a list of airlines I want to focus on...they're in my sig. Collecting JAL and China Airlines because those were the first airlines I have flown on. Singapore and United Airlines because I liked them (that and I'm a UMP member). Cathay and EVA brought back memories of the time I visited my home country in '84 and '96. DragonAir because I like their livery and service (eg food) was great!!! Qantas was unintentional....got caught up with their models while trying to find a B737-800 (only one I have flown on) and their Nalanji and Wunala B747. That and I remember the old koala Qantas commercial shown in the US. Lastly, Virgin Atlantic because I was impressed with the A340-600 I saw pulling into a gate at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai....again, its the color combination of their livery.
So now, I am content with collecting models from these 9 airlines. Some, there are many available, other, not a whole lot. So its a good balance.
The first model in my collection was an NWO resin 707=320C that came to me from Tokyo in the mid 1970s. My second two models were Dragon Wings. One was an Aeroflot 777 and the other was an NWO 747 Worldplane that I bought in Hong Kong. The Aeroflot because my lady friend was a purser with Aeroflot and the other because I worked for NWA for so many years. When I got back to the USA after the Hong Kong trip I went to Ebay and started searching for any airplane, any brand, any scale Aeroflot. I do recall how small I thought the 500 scale were and did not buy any more of those and I also thought how lame the Schaback or whatever they are were. Herpa 500 seemed hokey to me too because of the goofy gears.
Now days I collect anything that looks good to me. I am livery oriented and also anything Russian. The Russian because my lady friend is Russian and along the way I have somehow grown to appreciate that culture for all that it is...or isn't. I suppose you might say that I not only collected may Aeroflot models and other memoribalia but I also collected an actual Aeroflot human too.

I was in Berlin in 1993 and came across Schabak 1:600 airplanes. I bought a few and then found the distributor here in the US. I have over 400 of these planes. Then Gemini jets appeared and I bought my first Gemini jet. I have close to 300 of these models. Now, I've begun collecting of few Inflight 200 aircraft. Needless to say, my collection is large.
I started collecting when I was 10, Schuco and later Schabak, scale 1:600. I was already crazy about those despite their not too realistic look. In 1999 during a home leave to Germany (I normally work abroad) I discovered Herpa's 1:500 and a little later the Starjets. The dam broke and 3 years later I had already more than 200 of the 1:500 gems. However, in 2003 I bought my first 1:400 model, the Aeroclassics SAS BAC 1-11, a Gen I model. It took about a year of transition for a complete 1:400 focus. Since then almost exclusively 1:400 - I have more than 250 of those now.
Collection criteria (you should limit yourself, otherwise it will get out of hand):
- planes I have flown on
- Lufthansa: all releases
- other German airlines: all releases
- Malaysia: all releases
- BIMAN: all releases
- Aerolineas Argentinas: all releases
- MEA: all releases
- Dan Air: all releases
- many airlines from South America
- long haul airliners from overseas that flew into Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin
- short haul airliners from neighbouring European airlines

When I first started collecting, I was planning on getting one model of each aircraft type, but I soon found myself buying two or three models of each aircraft because of how much I liked the liveries.
Nowadays, I still try to maintain a balance regarding aircraft types, but I concentrate more on liveries. I display my collection organized into different regions of the world. These are the regions, arranged from greatest to least amount of models:
1. US Airliners
2. Mexican Airliners
3. British Airliners
4. Airliners from the Middle East
5. Airliners from other parts of Europe
6. Airliners from the rest of the world (Pacific = 8, East Asia = 5, Africa = 3)
7. House Colors Models.
I also have a separate section with cargo aircraft and a few models in 1:200 scale. I collect both historic and current aircraft. As you can see, my collection is quite eclectic. In total I own about 220 models.

I sometimes feel that I am trying to get every airplane of every airline, lol.
First, I collect everything Delta, and all the airlines that made up Delta (Northeast, Western, and now maybe Northwest) I grabbed a Green Box "C & S" connie, but was a bit disappointed when it feature the merger marking of "Delta/C & S". I was hoping for the green and yellow C & S markings, but was glad to get the model anyway.
Next I collect any aircraft I have flown on.
Third I collect certain airlines whose hostory appeals to me; Varig, AeroMexico, Air Canada, Aer Lingus, South African, Thai, etc
Last I collect any airplane that has a unique history (all Convairs), or ones that catch my eye because of design, historical importance, or color scheme. My favorite era was the "Golden Age" from props to jets, when I was younger and had the opportunity to fly on several of the classics.
I have to blame DAC for all my purchases!! I only had a few RS/SM jets (EK) and some from my local retailer.....And then when I joined this forum I was buying left, right and center!! And now I have to stop!! pull on the brakes!
For me, I think that if I was the general Director of an airport, what airlines would i want to fly into my airport and i then collect those airlines and aircraft they have in 1:500 scale. But now im geting into 1:400 as well so my fleet will increase.

well the story of my collection was when i first saw a diecast model on the internet, i was so nieve and didn't know much about the planes except just the airliners but later on i started get to know the types of aircrafts and where airliners fly too but the number one thing was learning other airliners from around the world.
My Grandfather was a pilot and thats the carreer i do want to pursue when i graduate from high school, you can tell that aviation is in my blood but the #1 thing about aviation was collecting "toy planes". The way i collect is the planes that catches my eye, specifically planes with winglets!!!!!! But one of my favorite plane is the Boeing 757, if you look at my collection that's the most type of aircraft i have.

My dad started collecting a few 1:600 schaebaks and buying me coin bank models (not really to scale or to high detail), especially the texaco series. latter he bought a few corgi classics (1:144) and then most of the early corgi huey/cobra helicopters (1:48)
i started buying 1:400 when i found the gemini jets YS-11 PBA, since it was a local (cape cod) airline that a relative used to fly for. Now i collect mostly US domestic airlines, concentrating on American and Delta but i have at least one aircraft of most of the major US airlines. in terms of international airlines, i concentrate on international airline that could be found flying to NYC. also i am trying to get all the different airframes, especially all the unique ones. so it is somewhat of a mish-mash of airlines and time periods. also i will buy anything related to PBA/Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines/Island Air or cape cod related. 1:400 Aeroclassic PBA DC-3, please?
It all started when I was really bored, i was browsing through the net when i typed in model airplanes. I then found herpa and i nearly passed out. I looked at those for a while and found Gemini. An hour later i bought my first Gemini, A qantas A380. Then I discovered 1:200 and thought that was the scale for me. Then I flew on Hawaiian which led me to a lifelong love of the airline and the islands. So i went to Gemini and found Hawaiian airlines 767-300 Kolea,pakalakala, and the rest is history

Desire not to buy has a lot to do with it. If I see something that I have not seen before or something that is hard to find and at a low price I will get it but then I have to take it home so it cannot be too big.

Well, I had bought the occasional Corgi before, but I then decided to start collecting more seriously. So I started out not really knowing anything much about the planes or the models (nothing much has changed then! - you see, I'm more into the models that the real planes), so I bought lots of things off ebay, usually, because I didn't know any better, cheap and nasty things (Schabak mostly) until I realised VERY quickly that they were, umm, sh*te!!
Unfortunately, I have this thing where, I cannot just buy one of a type of aircraft or airline, I need to have at least 3 or 4 before I'm happy and can move on.
Because I bought all these models at the beginning, I now have airlines that I otherwise would have no real desire of collecting, and, vice versa, there are a lot of others that I would collect, such as Lufthansa and Swissair, because I am wanting to finish everything else off first.
I am almost there, but I keep getting sidetracked!!
My original plan had been to collect only European things and those that serve Prestwick. Fat chance of that now!
In fact, only North and South America, Africa, and Antarctica are the 4 continents that I have not collected from, and I hope to keep it like that, keep a limit on it all somehow!
Although, I could make an exception for Antarctica, of course, due to there being so few planes anyway.
...Well, ok, I say North America, but I have 2 Northeast Yellowbird 727s, but I'll sell them soon methinks as I do not need them.
Also, ironically, the closest I've come to starting on a 'new' airline recently has been Braniff, with all these Concordes and 2707s flying about.
Also, some of those 1:250 DC3s look kind of tasty.
Got to hold my line and stand my ground though!!

I collect 1/400 planes I have flown in. There are about 300 of them so far. They will constantly increase as long as air travel will be an essential part of my life. Moreover, many have not been reproduced as yet....

Emphasis On Legacy Carriers Of The World, Particularly Liveries That Appeal To Me Visually, So Certain Legacy Liveries Will Not Grace My Collection Such As Air Canada's Ugly Toilet Bowl Scheme Or British Airways Nelson's Flag.
Equal Emphasis On Retro Obscure Canadiana Such As Nordair, EPA, Transair, Pacific Western, Quebecair.
Have A Soft Spot For Other Underdog Airlines Around The World Such As Bouraq Or Cruziero.
Appeal May Be Simply Because It's Eye Catching, I Might Have Read An Article, Or To Augment A Legacy Carrier To Complete A "Diorama Theme" Where They Can Be Seen The Respective Home Airports.
IE Singapore-Bouraq. British Airways/Airtours-Vs Caledonian, Laker, BMI/BMA, Monarch. BOAC-BUA-BEA As A Few Examples.
I Collect Mostly 70s & 90s, 80s Are Secondary, But I Also Collect A Few Piston Power & Early Jet Power Liveries From The 60s.

I buy most off of E-Bay.You can get some really nice deals if you just look.I like it,I buy it.Would like to at lease get 1 from every country.

Unfortunately, I have this thing where, I cannot just buy one of a type of aircraft or airline, I need to have at least 3 or 4 before I'm happy and can move on.

What I meant to say, but do not think it's entirely clear there, is that, because I am there, getting an amount of each airline and/or aircraft type I'm satisfied with, I have nothing of the other airlines I want to collect, like Lufthansa and Swissair so far. There got to a point where I started limiting myself.
To start on a 'new' airline or even a type of plane means having to spend something on not just one, but several models, so, I am just securing down everything in my existing collection first before I will then even consider moving on.
Then, after a little break, I will restart afresh with the rest of the British and European airlines I want. Take it easy, no rush, just concentrate on one at a time.
I, for example, do not have any Easyjet, Flybe, Britannia, Monarch, Aer Arran, Manx, TAP, Iberia, Sabena, Lufthansa, Swissair, SAS, Icelandair, etc etc, yet, I have loads of the likes of Qantas, Thai, Cathay, etc.
In other words, I've just done it 'backwards'.

My model collection started with building plastic model kits in 1/72nd and 1/144th scales, but time became an issue then Corgi came to my rescue and I started working with them, doing research which gave me gratis diecast models in these scales to add to my collection. Alas, then came the issue of space and I had to put most of my models into storage as I just haven't got room to display them all!!
Aha, I 'discovered' Aeroclassics, Gemini Jets etc and bought a few 1/400th airliners that I had seen at London Heathrow in the '60s and THAT started my theme collecting - airliners seen at Heathrow between 1960-1980.
The only problem I have (as with other things!) is temptation and I have deviated into collecting a few from major US carriers also, but have resisted the lesser-known US airlines.

Mine started when I wanted to start collecting model planes for real last year. At the Sandown Park collectors' fair I bought the GJ BA 767-336ER G-BWND from Geoff Noble.

Yep, I grew up (in Hounslow West) directly under the flightpath of 28L (yes I know it's now 27L) at LHR between 67 and 87 and I collect aircraft I remember from my childhood/early adulthood. I've only a small collection but it'll grow eventually. One model I'm quite pleased to have is an Aeroclassics Iraqi IL-76. I still recall hearing this screaming over my house every Saturday morning in the mid 80s. I'd like to collect one each of the various European and international carriers which served Heathrow at the time. I still like the old KLM, Aer Lingus, Alitalia, CSA and BA liveries. Another favourite is the East African Super VC-10 which I remember seeing from my junior school on finals.
I used to be able to read the reg numbers on the wings without optical aid and I could tell what type of aircraft was approaching by its noise before I saw it. The old Russian airliners were particularly easy to detect as were Concorde and B707s.
My first flight was in 1979 with an Hapag-Lloyd A300B4 from CGN to PMI. My second flight was an 1 hour trip with a SAT Caravelle from CGN to CGN.....a special flight during a travel agency market at Cologne/Bonn Airport in 1980.
That was the beginning of my hobby!
First models i got, was everything from Revell/Airfix/Heller and some early Wooster models from the planes i went to my holiday destination.
At the end of the 80ies i started to concentrate on my favourite, Lockheeds L-1011 TriStar!!!!
And that was the beginning of a deap love to my TriStar.
Today i have a model collection of around 400 airplane models. But the biggest part are my TriStars:

Me too, especially when I realise how I'm bending the logic to find excuses to collect more models!
My primary drive is for examples I've flown on, which stalled for a decent while until NG entered the fray and backfilled a lot of missing examples. However, I first flew in 1990 so missed out on what I call "classic airliners" (Tristars, Tridents, 727s, early 747s etc)
Consequently I'm running a secondary collecting thread around these historical aircraft, but trying to focus on types that would have been seen at my local airport at the time (Teesside) to give it a personal touch.
Clearly this will also be warped to include aircraft that never visited the place, as I am so weak-willed....
I became fascinated when I could watch some planes fairly low over my house going into Manchester Airport, as a child. I suppose the collecting of these wonderful Aeroclassics, GJ, Phoenix, and NG Models is reliving my childhood and teenage years.
Particularly loved the Boeing 707, but also CV990, DC-8, VC-10, 747, DC-10 etc. BOAC and British Caledonian were my favourite airlines.
As I grew older I really enjoyed photographing airliners and enjoyed many great days at Heathrow, Manchester, and also seeing odd-ball stuff at places like Southend, Stansted, Lasham, and Manston. Started travelling abroad to do this - trips to Frankfurt, Paris, Ostend, Budapest, Lisbon were memorable, and then weeks spent at Hotel Emmantina at Athens became my favourite resort! I began to travel even further afield and enjoyed superb trips to Hong Kong Kai Tak and Sharjah / Dubai, and then to the USA - Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, and my favourite destination of all - Miami (including Opa Locka and Fort Lauderdale), which I visited 3 times in the early 1990s to enjoy a huge range of aircraft types, from Connies and Convairs and DC-6's and even Curtiss C46's, to 727-100s, 737's, and numerous 707s and DC-8s, right up to MD11s, 747s, and Concorde. And especially all those colourful South and Latin American operators. Those days were the best!
I also loved all Russian stuff, and due to Miami discovered a belated love of those charismatic piston airliners.
But I still love the 707-320B/C more than anything, its just so regal, graceful, and beautiful.
So my collecting revolves mostly around the 1970s scene, then around Miami and Latin American models, to Russian stuff. 95% of models are aircraft and airlines I have seen. But I don't have any strict criteria. I try to get at least one model of every aircraft type, though I admit this has sadly lapsed recently as I find modern twinjets such as A350, 787, 737MAX, just so incredibly dull and and characterless. But I accept that is just my perception and many others love those types and find what I love dull. It's not helped by the total absence of imagination depicted by modern white-body schemes (inevitably driven by a cost-cutting exercise).
Finally, I don't actually enjoy flying much at all, so have never particularly been bothered about collecting the models I flew on.

Some serious thread necromancy here, but what the heck, it's an interesting topic..
I've been an airliner fan ever since I can remember. My first flights as a young kid were on Delta 727s and DC-9s from New Orleans back to my hometown near Knoxville to visit my grandparents for the summer. I used to look at timetables I'd obtained on these flights and "fly" the segments listed while playing on my swingset in the backyard. Of course I also built plastic model kits but those mostly got glue everywhere and I never bothered with paint (or more likely, my parents declined to buy me paint )
Things kicked into overdrive when my mom married a Delta pilot. Now we had access to non-rev flights all over the country. The only price of sitting in first class was having to wear a coat and tie - nice tradeoff IMO. Thus began my love of L-1011's since Delta of course had one of the biggest fleets of them. Even managed a few flights on the old DC-8-71's before they were gone.
Fast forward to adulthood and I decided I'd like to start having some models of aircraft I really liked and had memories of. Obtained some more plastic kits and started trying to build one. Turns out, my painting abilities did not get any better in the intervening years. I was kind of discouraged and 10-15 kits ended up languishing in a closet, unbuilt.
So I blame my ex for my collection, because she was the one that started complaining about the clutter in the closets, after which I decided to sell the kits on Ebay. It was there that I noticed 1:400 models for sale that could give me the same memories without having to paint! Now, here I am 10 years later, with a much more understanding wife and a great hobby that continues to give me good memories.
I've detailed my collection criteria before in other threads, but it basically boils down to, if I like it, I get it. 1:200's mostly restricted to ones I've flown on though.
Loved airliners since I was a kid! My theme relates to the late 60s when I first fell in love with jets.
Specifically, my display is a plausible collection of planes the could have been diverted in the winter to my mid size Ontario, Canada hometown airport, roughly in the 1968 timeframe. So lots of 707s, 720s, 727s, DC8s, DC9sand and the odd Convair 880/990 and one VC10! No widebodies (gives room for more pieces in my display space!).
That era has my favorite livery style - the cheatline - and the notion of plausible diversons make it fun and loose, and doesn't lock me into chasing specific pieces. I just buy what like and pretty much have all I need. I move some in and out occasionally.
I'm willing to stretch the plausible diversion concept pretty far to include pieces I find with liveries I like very much from that era. I can make up a silly story to explain why the beautiful Hawaiian DC9-30 in delivery colours is here (on its way for some special maintenance), or why I see both a Western 727 and 720 (on LA Kings and California Golden Seals hockey team charters) here!
Also have the usual Delta, Eastern, National, CP Air, Air Canada, AA, Northeast, Wardair, Pan Am, Northwest, and some beautiful international pieces diverted from Toronto because of snow (KLM, Lufthansa, BOAC, Iberia, etc).
I bounce around on the explanation of the delivery colours Japan Air Lines Convair 880 - maybe a tour of Tokyo Symphony! Haha!
When I was a kid, my school was actually right underneath the final flight path of RWY13 approach of Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport close to the checkerboard. I watched all kinds of planes doing their right turn into the airport. As a Hong Konger, I really loved the Cathay planes, especially the Tristar with its unique design and its quietness. My dad took a CX flight to London and bought a Herpa 1:500 CX 744 VR-HUI and CX 772 VR-HNA. I was fascinated by its tempo printing and its movable wheels. So I started collecting seriously in 1998. Around 2002, I had bought all the 1:500 CX models through their CXcitement online store.
In 2003, I found out on Ebay someone selling Dreamjets CX Tristar. I was impressed by its printing detail. Got one from ebay and I was addicted collecting 1:400 ever since. Since then, I sold off all the 1:500 and only collected 1:400. CX is the backbone of my collection. Dragonair, Air Hong Kong and other that always showed up at Kai Tak was my priority.
Since 2009, I started working in China and became a frequent traveler of Shenzhen Airlines and Air China. I started collecting every Shenzhen and Air China, and also other planes that I flew on in China.
I started 2 years ago with airplanes that I've flown on, then expanded to others, with an emphasis on US legacy carriers and European flag carriers. I still prioritize planes that I've either flown on or spotted, as well as planes that come/have come to Chicago-O'Hare.
My main aim when collecting is to collect models of aircraft I saw when growing up on heathrow's doorstep from 1984 to 2000.
However I do also collect samples and liveries I like too which may or may not have passed through LHR over the years.

. I looked at those for a while and found Gemini. An hour later i bought my first Gemini, A qantas A380. Then I discovered 1:200 and thought that was the scale for me. Then I flew on Hawaiian which led me to a lifelong love of the airline and the islands. So i went to Gemini and found Hawaiian airlines 767-300 Kolea,pakalakala, and the rest is history
