Default JAL Collection Model Arrivals

Following on from the JetHut talk of a month or so ago I thought I really ought to try and get hold of some of the JAL Collection models to see how good they were. 46 models have been made to date, covering an impressive range of aircraft, and after quite a bit of searching I've been able to acquire 12 through Taobao. The first 8 just arrived yesterday and I plan on gradually reviewing each to see how they look. To start with though I've just published an intro video:

I was hoping for the unboxing process, actually. And you probably noticed already that you mixed up the 3 upper deck windows with a -300 series model. :-)

Yeah I mentioned that in the video later on - oops. The unboxing is quite messy due to the packaging type. They are out of the boxes now and in the process of having the photos taken.

Review number one is written.

Sounds great. Looking forward to the next review with detailed pictures/video.

I decided to start my reviews of the JAL Collection with the model I was most excited to receive - the JAS MD-90. I have to say I am impressed with it as it is arguably as good, if not better, than any other MD-90 in 400 scale. I have absolutely no problem displaying this one alongside my standard 400 scale models:

Decent is probably the right grade. But for me, oversized tires are a deal killer for me. Compared to the other two models in your photos, it looks to me that the nose landing gear is situated more forward than the other moulds?

I think it is just the size - however it is only marginally larger than on the Dragon mould and in other respects is better. I agree that if someone else produced a new MD-90 mould I'd expect that issue to be resolved but for $15 this MD-90 is as good as the alternatives.

I see no discrepancies in your review. As usual, thorough and unbiased. I will say, at least here in the states, there's no way anyone here will get ahold of one of these for less than 50-70 dollars if you're shopping on eBay for example. If these could be offered at that price point of $15 as you said you were able to find, it would indeed be a game changer.

I'm personally impressed with some of the detailing that you spoke of, the registration repeated on the forward gear doors, the over wing printing, and the crispness of the moulding of the vertical stab... all very, very good. Looking forward to hearing about the rest!

Yeah I saw the eBay prices for these with the magazines - crazy. I think that's partly due to Japanese located models always being silly prices. This one cost me 99RMB before postage (and the engtaobao intermediary %) which is about $15.50. It'll be interesting to see if the mould ever gets used again...

OK, for $15 that's an unbelievable deal. Now that gets me wondering why the prices of other 1/400 models are what they are. These diecast models can be made for less than $15 and retailers can still make good money at $15? I haven't held one of these JAL collection models in my hand, so I don't have the benefit of being able to experience the, "Wow, this is just $15 bucks!!!???" or "Oh yeah, no wonder this model costs $15 bucks, it feels like cotton" feelings. But for my collection, it still stands that I don't like over-sized tires. Immediate throw it out on eBay situation for me.

Didn't Phoenix release a boat load of these in the early 2000s?

Yes they did, which I mention in the review, but their mould is inferior to this one by some margin.

Looks really nice! If they made more types and airlines I would definitely be considering this and showing it to some friends who don’t have an interest in model airplane collecting

I've been gradually working my way through the JAL Collection models I managed to acquire and have quite a few more on the way from China too. To speed things up I decided that rather than do a full review I'd focus on the mould alone so to start with I take a look at the 737-400. It's actually a decent little mould, which could benefit from smaller tyres:

There needs to be an option to get these models at a $15 price point, with reasonable shipping, in the United States. I looked at the Japanese website recommended to you by someone on Facebook. A $28 TDA MD-80 model with shipping cost suddenly becomes $51. No thanks. Lower prices in the US, please.

Jim

Yep buying from Japan is a killer. I have had to get these from China without the mags.

Having said that you boys in the US are so well treated for postage it is embarrassing. Welcome to the rest of the world. Everytime I buy a model it costs me over $20 US to ship it regardless of where it is from - and I don't earn in USD!

Yep - will definitely admit that, we are spoiled for postage costs more often than not. I do wish these were more readily accessible!

Continuing my mould reviews of the JAL Collection I move on to the Boeing 747-100. Is it a reasonable substitute for all those impossible to find super expensive Big Birds? Sadly not really:

I continue my reviews of the JAL Collection moulds with a look at one of the better examples - the Boeing 767-300:

I know there is limited interest in these but I've also been producing a few videos for the Youtube channel. Today's effort is the 3rd and covers the 747-100:

Incidentally I just got another pair of models in the post from China - the 777-200 and NAMC YS-11
