Default Check Your Gemini Qantas 747SPs

I hesitate to post this on DAC but since I posted it on Facebook someone else has corroborated it and shown a photo of their model, which is far worse than mine - I've added it to the original post. Anyway:

When looking over my Gemini Qantas 747SP recently I discovered some concerning degradation. Although I don't think this is necessarily common it is worrying - can anyone further corroborate similar issues with this 2011 release?

I don't think so. I think it is like the paint bubbling that Blue Box and Magic models commonly get. It just seems to affect the paint surface

Interesting! Will have to go looking to find my copy and see if it has started to bubble.

Wondering if other models from that period will be having that same bubbling issue pop up soon... got a few from the ‘11-‘13 timeframe so I should watch those.

I checked my 1990's livery QF SP a few months ago, no paint bubbling which was a relief.

I just posted a thread over in 1/200 of a model from this era (2011) with I think a similar issue though more paint flaking that bubbling, but will be interesting to see if it’s an isolated example

This is an issue that develops over time if this rot has set in. Thankfully I sold mine sometime back in the anticipation that NG would do one, which thankfully they have now done! Didn't notice any of this on mine at the time, but who's to say this wouldn't have been an issue down the line!!

My understanding is that if a model is over 10 years old, and hasn't crumbled to dust yet, it is safe.

OK, what's the diff between zinc rot and paint bubbling? Some say paint bubbling is superficial - a problem with the paint itself, 'bad paint'. I'm not so sure - it could well be a reaction with the zinc surface that negatively affects the paint over time. It may not be just a paint or surface preparation issue prior to application of paint. TBD, Doug

My VH-EAB, with the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games titles has it on the wings. Will have to track down an NG one.

Thankfully mine still seems to be OK

Which is good, because I was going to sell it. But after comparing to the NG release I just got I may just end up keeping it too. I'll start another thread on that though so as not to derail this one....

Well I don't have my Qantas 747SP's from GJ in 1:400 any longer, but I checked my Emirates A380 United for Wildlife and I'm afraid that it suffers from the ill fated Shrimp in Cinnamon Toast Crunch issue!

I read somewhere if I sprinkle Old Bay Seasoning on it and use cocktail sauce it will go away!

Doug, most paint bubbling is poor paint prep of the surface to be painted!
