Hello everybody,

Phoenix will do the "Flying Honu" as well. Plus there will be a special gift box 3 in 1 set (Limited to 300 sets worldwide)

I got this information from Instagram. I don't know if it's a special release for myhobbyhouse or not.

Phoenix or JC? What do you think.

Probably the phoenix version?
Not sure if JC and GJ use the same A380 mould?
I got my 1st phx A380 last week, the thing that suprised me the most was how light it is, it's no heavier than a GJ 737/757!! Looks very nice too...

Seems like in this re-release they’ve fixed the eye issues at least on the CGI

I ordered JC, I think their printing is way better even if the Phoenix mould might be a little better.

I've just taken a look at my JC HiFly A380 and I wonder why the JC mould should be inferior to the Phoenix mould?
In fact the wings aren't straight at my Phoenix A380.

A380 have seagull wings, with a lot of curvature, a bit less inflight.

This is aluminium, one of the reason why they are much better. They will never zinc-rot,

To me, a model's "face" is extremely important. If something doesn't fit, I might even skip the model.

With JC and Gemini, the shape of the nose is not well done. Phoenix did a better job here.

By the way ... sometimes the cockpit printing can ruin an actually great shape. A face is made up of several parts.

Do not like how the phoenix a380 is way too light, just feels wrong. Kind of irrelevant though as they havent made much with it recently.

To be true to scale an A380 in 1/400 should weight about 9g...

could not care less about the proper weight compared to scale, they just feel cheap when they are far too light. I am sure that the new AV400 A380 will be a worthy competitor, especially if they re-release the stuff that the other companies aren't interested in making again.

IIRC, the body of the Phoenix A380 is an aluminum alloy not a zinc one.
Hence lighter. No zinc rot, ever, either which is good.

Most of the zinc models have 0 chance of zinc rot as well. Just my personal preference for a weightier model, the phx is the best overall for sure so far.

While the oxidation potential delta is bigger for aluminium than for zinc, aluminium oxide is totally impermeable to oxygen: the reaction stops at a few atomic layers. That is why aluminium item don't need to be painted unless for color change.

This is not the case for zinc and its alloys as the zinc oxide is permeable to oxygen and is additionally hygroscopic (absorb water and gives Zinc hydroxide): the result is a propagation of the oxidation with volume expansion, causing cracks in the paints, allowing more oxygen to comes true and to feed the oxidation. This is zinc rot, very similar to rust (iron oxidation).

Any zinc alloy model is will undergo this process, this is just a question of time and proper surface preparation before painting.

as a chemistry PHD explained to me zinc rot is due to impurities in the metal which cause expansion/contracting at different rates causing cracks and eventually the model to crumble to dust. There are zinc alloy toys made in the early 1900's with similar compounds, which are in good condition and don't show any signs of zinc rot.

If a zinc model is made properly with correct metal compounds then zinc rot will never happen, if it is made incorrectly then it will happen within 5-10 years and is generally not preventable unless you keep the model in a vacuum sealed and temperature controlled chamber.

Not much to make except re-releases and maybe some Emirates special liveries, although to be fair I think the A380's popularity with collectors likely outpaces its popularity with the airlines themselves. So I think re-releases will probably sell well anyway (and I guess that's what AV400 is banking on).

As someone who has been collecting for a very long time, I can say I appreciate the effort AV400 is putting into developing their own mould. I frequently choose other models over the A380 in years past. Since then, I've come around to the giant jumbo, and I'm looking forward to adding some to the collection where I've missed out.
