Question Your experience of selling collections to UK shops

Have you had any experience of selling models in bulk to shops in the UK?
Have you got any tips or advice?

I’m selling half of my 700+ diecast aircraft to clear some space. It’ll take months to organise, so I’m looking to sell the first hundred quickly rather than profitably.
I’ve short-listed about 50 × 1:500s, 40 × 1:400s and 20 × 1:200s, mostly civilian airliners, all bought in the last 3-4 years, sitting on my shelves ever since.
I’ve found these 3 shops who I’ve bought from many times, who say that they buy collections:
• aviationretaildirect.com near Heathrow.
• airspotters.com in Northants, and
• aircraftmodelstore.co.uk in Mancs, who are very honest about how little they offer for 1/500ths!
— Do you know anyone else in the UK who buys collections, especially southern England/Wales so I could deliver them myself?
— Have you had any experience selling to these shops, or any other advice? I’ve already read the pages on this website about trading on DAC and making safer experiences.
— I might advertise the second hundred on here or eBay in May – do you know if Brexit has changed any customs rules when selling between private individuals?

Thanks in advance!

not sure if anyone has ever sold collections to any of above. there is a trader i know who also buys collections. but like a lot of others only offers 10p in pound at most. unless he's changed it recently. but then again he like others buys the lot. which saves you a heck of a lot of time and money selling on ebay. paying around 15% in ebay+y + paypal fees. or time to sell on here. which can take ages. not to mention all the time and buy packing materials and time to post. so you have to way up letting them go cheap, against saving a lot of time and possible hassle.

afaik, brexit hasn't changed anything sold in u.k. but european buyers will now have to pay import + custom charges of at least 20%. unless you declare low value.

I sold a collection of Herpa 1/500 plus a few 1/400 Gemini jets and aeroclassics to ARD last year. Good way to get rid of bulk but don't expect top dollar for each model.

email them with a list of what you want to get rid of. I'm sure they will let you know and make an offer if interested. You'll be looking at no more than a few quid per model. If you want full price then ebay maybe the better option assuming you have plenty of time on your hands and like visiting the Post Office

I've been with ebay since 2007 and yes I've managed to shift quite a few unwanted models. But totally agree with you on the time and effort spent and the cost's involved are pretty ridiculous. AFAIK they are doing away with the paypal ( man in the middle) situation which might improve things. Sorry just my 2p on Ebay.

Thanks guys — who's Kevin, Aviaction?

I'm hoping to move house this year, so keen to shift them easily rather than make money or go to the PO every day. I must confess I've even thrown away a few old 1/600ths, but only the tattiest, just to kick-start what feels like a daunting, laborious process.

I'm surprised I've never heard of Bedfordshire Diecast before — when sourcing a new model I usually search on Google, which has sometimes taken me to random shops on the other side of the world; I thought I knew most UK retailers — until now.

David.

I know you asked for UK shops but in my experience, most places won't take a massive collection unless you do consignment instead of selling them outright. In my area only one shop pays cash for models, all others only offer store credit

I sold my collection to Simon who owns the above. He will give you a fair price.
He is also a member on here. I thoroughly recommend him. Nice guy too.
