Default Bit of photography for my new hobby

Greetings all.

Have just started to collect 1/400 models, mainly 1970s/80s vintage which I remember from my plane spotting days at Heathrow and abroad. I had a couple of Aeroclassics 747s I picked up fifteen years ago but have managed to add another 30 in the last two months. Sure is addictive.

Thought I'd try some 'inflight' photography today, hope you don't mind indulging me!

Yes, Photoshop (Paint Shop Pro actually) involved in removing the stand. Fortunately my walls are painted light blue.

Disregarding your light blue walls, that’s some really cool lighting. Excellent pictures!

Looks very nice! Not within my collecting criteria but I always have a soft spot for retros.

Really liking the Lufthansa, SAS, and Thai shots! You need to get your hands on some flaps down models! Perfect for these kind of shots.

Carlo - welcome to the forum, and you jumped in with some great photos. The lighting is perfect, and as others have mentioned, your shots bring these retros to life. Thanx, Doug

Thank you all for your very kind replies.

I do tend to try and "improve" slightly some of my older models, I like to paint the interior of the engine nacelles matt black and if possible obtain some better wheels and tyres - two things which can make a surprising difference. Most 747s seem to be stuck with old style spigots and non removable wheels unfortunately. I did upgrade the Condor 747 with some more modern Pheonix 747 wheels but it was a hell of a job and I won't be doing that again. (Unfortunately necessary as I stupidly pulled the wheels off it when I bought it 15 years ago as I though they looked awful!) The Iberia DC-10 is carrying much later Phoenix wheels and tyres.

Not good for originality I know but I buy them to enjoy and look at anyway. That's a good idea about getting some flaps down models by the way.

I do have a few moderns, as you can see.

Nice wheel swap on the Condor 747. Your comment about taking away the originality of a model is dead on. I often wonder if physically changing a model in any way takes away value, and it might, but you also mention that your model's value is the enjoyment you take at looking at them, and I agree, that's the main objective. One aspect of photoshopping - it doesn't take away any value, and my primary enjoyment comes from looking at photos of my models where real detail is revealed. And while discussing photoshopping models, I played with your Condor 747 and removed what I consider the only drawback of this model (which I also own)... Keep shooting, Doug

Ha, nice one! It looked better but took me a while to work out why.

I was very pleasantly surprised when I got that Dragon Lufthansa 747, I think it's a lovely mould apart from the cheap wheels. Obviously no seams and the finish is really excellent.

Hi, landing gears on the TAP and Sabena 747 are both as they came, Condor one I replaced the whole set and AV400 DC10 replaced just the wheels only.
