Default 1/400th DC-8-21 Club USA travel club

Club USA was started in Indianapolis by a former Voyager travel club captain (later retired from American Trans Air). It was originally supposed to be a travel club in Oklahoma City. Those folks backed out and they had to figure out what to do with the DC-8 they had bought with one of the investors in Indiana. They were unable to sell it, so they started Club USA Travel Club with that flying USA and Rebel flag.
Club USA started operations in May, 1978 and lasted a little over two years. It was during the time that the economy was tanking, inflation was awful, credit card interest rates were above 20%, and they were forced to shut down by summer 1980.

The real thing:

1/400th DC-8-21 Club USA travel club-ind_080080_n1976p_01.jpg

cn 45435 built 8/15/1961 Del to EA as N8614, sold to Overseas National Airways on 6/20/1973 re-registered to N1976P 4/1976 and repainted into bicentennial “Confederate” scheme. Sold to Club USA Travel club on 12/30/1977. Sold to International Air Leases, INC in 7/1980
Powered by 4 P&W JT4A-9’s.
Aircraft was converted to 162 seats to allow first class leg room with a completely refurbished wide body look interior

The aircraft remained in the basic ONA bicentennial paint, but the “ONA” on the tail was painted out and replaced with a dark blue stripe with 2 stars, to match the other 2 blue stripes with stars above and below the ONA titles.

The model:

Aeroclassics DC-8-21 N1976P Part # ACN1976P DIMA #74485 produced 2017

Thanks to the great folks at V1 decals, I was able to get custom decals made with the dark blue stripe and the 2 stars to cover the “ONA” lettering on the tail. This makes the model appear exactly as it did when in service with Club USA.
This is one of my favorite models as I would see this aircraft almost every single day when I was working at Indianapolis International Airport. Thanks again to the wonderful people at V1 decals, I can keep that memory alive with this 1/400th model.

I would recommend V1 decals, depending on what you want to do. They did an excellent job for me.

Thanks!

It looks like they are the same guys who used to collaborate with Airplane Replicas when doing customs. Very nice models they made too. IIRC I've got their Braathens 732 somewhere.

Oddly enough I put this model on my eBay watch list about a year ago and forgot to go back and buy it. Just ordered it now and I may too investigate a decal for the tail.

That's awesome. I originally had the Gemini ONA DC8, but since the Aeroclassics is on a better mould, I got one of those. I've been thinking for a long time about how to duplicate the Club USA example. V1 decals had done some other project for me, so I asked them about it, no problem. Actually this does work better on the Aeroclassics model because on the Gemini, the stars are just a bit large and not exactly in the proper positions. The Aeroclassics appears to be spot on in this regard.

That’s a darn nice model, I never imagined the rebel flag would be such a good looking scheme on a plane
