Default Gemini Jets & 50 Shades of American Airlines

Some of you probably know about the debacle between Gemini Jets and the American Airlines livery. The gray body color usually varies by way too much between each release. Their 787-9 they did for October is no exception. This isn't the first, and certainly won't be the last, time Gemini Jets picks completely different shades of grey for American Airlines releases.

It almost looks like they may have photoshopped (or used too much light) on the AA 787-9 preview image to hide most of the color issues... I'll let you be the judge.

I think your definitely on to something. Its both a combination of too much light on purpose and photoshoping the model. Great detective work on your part. Keep it up the collector should know whats going on...

So glad I came across this thread. I added a GJ AA 787 to my eBay cart and was about to browse for some other models to add when, for some reason, I'd thought I'd check up on DAC. AA 787 ejected from the cart!!

My eyes are getting old, so JJ Skippy, I'm going to let YOU be the judge. "Completely different" shades of gray? You can't just leave it at that and tell us to decide. What are your findings? Can you post pics of your models with different shades side by side so you can point to what you are talking about? I know you're spearheading the operation for more 1/400 scale RJs, but since you brought this up, you're going to have to spearhead this AA color debacle operation too.

Sheesh!! Why would GJ use Photoshop to deceive us like this? Gone are the days when you could trust that a model received would represent the real deal. I'm going to ask my friend with good eyesight to come check all of my Euro white models to make sure that each one has the correct shade of Euro white!

Alright, I’ll chalk that up to my fault for not providing my own pics. I didn’t have one ready when I created the thread but I have one now. I don’t collect AA aircraft that much (more of a DL collector), but I do have an A319, A320, A321, and a CRJ-200 in the new colors. I’ve avoided a majority of AA aircraft because I’ve known about this color issue for a long time now.

Now, I don’t think the lighting in the photo isn’t all that great; I will have to take another photo later, but you can see the color variation, with the A320 leaning far too dark. The A319 is the lightest out of the bunch, and I believe more accurate.

I have stopped buying Gemini models because they cant get the colors right, and I have stopped flying American and Delta too just for that reason...

I like chrome finishes on 1:400 airliners because they look so good, but no bare metal 1:1 airliner, even fresh off the line, ever looked as good as a chrome finished model. Also, as painted finishes on airliners age, all manner of differing color effects emerge, including American's silver mica paint, chosen to “retain the iconic silver look” - no biggie.

We could turn it into a thread about the difficulties (impossibility) of scaling down perlescent coatings maybe.

But hey, another digital image problems thread, why not?

Btw, does GJ use a pol filter for their camera when shooting those images?

Funny, the colours GJ use look better than the AA tone IRL (I do like the darker silver).
Lucky I don't even have any AA N/C in my collection, although I do want to get a 738, 763WL and 752 in the N/C at one point as I flew on these a while ago.
But I guess they won't be GJ's, thanks for raising this issue!

I think the AA pic posted by Russ sheds light (pun intended) on a bigger issue! I think it is a Boeing versus Airbus issue! It's like left Twix and Right Twix!

Still waiting for my JCWings200 Air India 747-400 bright white paint to yellow/tan so it is more accurate!

Not really sure; I don’t know what camera they use or editing software, but the latter is most likely Photoshop.

I do have to agree with some of the models. Maybe they choose it sometimes because it looks better than IRL

Let's see it Big Al!

I must say though, consistency is boring and variation more life like! Just like the variation with real metal to some degree...let me get back to checking the yellowing/tanning process on my JC Wings 200 Air India 747-400 NC's . Their moto should be: We grow into accuracy!

...better yet, hey Johann track down that bright white paint formula the factory used on that Air India as it has not turned like all your other damned white models I see that have yellowed/tanned!

Air Canada Toothpaste livery takes the cake. American is legit just grey, but no manufacturer has had a consistent toothpaste colour for AC
