Default Good bye Delta 777

Delta decide to retiring the Boeing 777 this November 2020. How sad to read that. This aircraft have between 10 and 21 years of service but the company believes that their depreciation is too large.

When their introduction, they allowed Delta to extend it's radius of action by giving it access to Johannesburg from Atlanta or Sydney from Los Angeles. But today it is A350 which must take over this role, consuming 21% less fuel by seat.
The company believes that it's network and fleet will shrink due to from the crisis to the covid-19 pandemic and the significant and sustained decline in the situation must persist for two or three years.

Do you think it is a good or a bad idea from Delta?

I don't think it's a good idea, but It's not my decision to make. Hopefully someone will pick them up. Maybe Delta will pick up the American A330's that are sitting out in the desert in Roswell, NM.

It’s sad, but it makes sense to me business wise, a fleet of 18 aircraft that need separate crews, separate maintenance etc. can’t be very efficient, especially now.

18 doesn’t seem like that small of a fleet...

Sad!! The 777 was the workhorse and icon for Delta. Pretty much like their 744's.

I don't know, I always felt like the 777 was a bit of an orphan in DL's fleet compared to UA/AA (who aren't getting rid of them either). I'd say it was the 767 that carried them for a long time, they had 124 of those! I'm still sad because I wanted to get a ride on one of the 772LR's and it looks like my only realistic opportunity for that now would be with Emirates or Qatar.

Delta would fly a LR from ATL to LAX back in the day. I think it was a continuation of the flight from JHB-ATL. I flew the LAX segment once on the LR.
