Romania “Spring Primavera” G-BIKY. I would have thought that NG would have done this by now.

I daresay she'd be positively apoplexic about BA being run by an Irishman who devolved control to a Spaniard. But hey, she certainly brought the xenophobe out in many a 'Little Briton'. A good indicator of what was to come with Brexit.

Quick question: how many of these special tails did British Airways have way back when, and when did they stop? I find these tails quite interesting.

The entire fleet, bar Concorde sported a utopia tail in the early days, franchise partners too. The plan was to reveal more and more designs in the lead up to the Millennium. I think by the time the Millennium arrived almost half the fleet were sporting standard Chatham tails, after a mass breakout of jingoism, instigated by Margaret Thatcher in 1997. The project was described as being "misunderstood" and "ahead of its time". I agreed with those assertions then and still do now.

I think I managed to get an example of all of those 747's that were actually produced (still a few to be done) and I have the 742's as well (not pictured). It would be great to get my Utopia 757 fleet up to a good size too. Plenty left to do here and I believe NG have said they will all get done eventually. Can't wait...

Great thread. Thanks for posting the airliner world article, I had not seen that before. The other great reference is this book. Well worth getting if you are a Utopia fan.

That's my go to reference guide too, it covers BA liveries and histories right up to the utopia era in the late 90's. It could probably use an update covering 21st century BA though.

Looking at these pics and especially Big Als 747 Utopia Tail collection makes me sick to my stomach for parting with mine. The GJ's are easy to reacquire for the most part, but the BB's are not. I still have my lone BB Botswana Animals and Trees to hold onto in case the bug bites again. I'm sure it will.

Don't sell the BB Botswana Animals and Trees. One day as you said 'the bug might bite again'. I hope one day you will find BB BA 747 world tails.

Thank you. Yes, I have decided against it. It was always my favorite model, and was going to be the last one to leave my possesion. Everything always seems to come full circle in life. I'm sure I will collect again!

I had the GJ version of Rendezvous. I know BB produced this as well. Mine was the white box with the red ribbon edition of 1000. I think I let it go for $32 or something. Never found a Canada Whale Rider for a price I was comfortable paying.

Here's a pic of G-CPEN wearing 'Chatham Dockyard' in the World Tails era. One way to tell is the 'United Kingdom' wording near the tail. When this became standard, what other changes were made? Simply flying said 'From 2000 to 2011, the tail flag was enlarged and raised higher on the tail'. And I've noticed the bullseye on the nose was removed at some stage.

I was never a fan of the BA World tails, I agreed with Margaret Thatcher on that, I preffered the Negus and Landor, but the Chatham is modern take on the Negus which I quite like.

The black nose ring wasn't so much a feature of the livery when it appeared on 757's and 737's, as it was a design feature during trials of microwave landing systems (MLS) at Heathrow Airport around 15 years ago. The black ring was better at absorbing and conducting the microwaves towards the radar than the standard white paint.

There was also a Sweden tail plus a Chelsea Rose and a Chatham in the 200 series releases. All of which are safely ensconced within Al's display cabinet.

As far as I can tell and quoting Keith Gaskell's 'British Airways, It's History, Aircraft and Liveries' book, the Boeing 757's that sported Utopia tails as of publication in 1999, were...

G-CPEL 'Animals and Trees' (Botswana)
G-BPET 'Bauhaus' (Germany)
G-BIKA 'Blue Poole' (England)*
G-CPEM 'Blue Poole' (England)
G-BIKB 'Chelsea Rose' (England)*
G-BMRD 'Chelsea Rose' (England)
G-BPED 'Cockerel of Lowicz' (Poland)
G-BIKX 'Delftblue Daybreak' (Holland)
G-CPEP 'Dove/Colum' (Ireland)
G-BMRI 'Flower Field' (Sweden)
G-BIKH 'Golden Khokhloma' (Russia)
G-BMRJ 'Grand Union' (England)*
G-BIKO 'Mountain of The Birds/Tartan' (Scotland)*
G-BMRH 'Nalanji Dreaming' (Austrailia)
G-BIKC 'Ndebele' (South Africa)
G-BIKW 'Ndebele' (South Africa)
G-BMRA 'Paithani' (India)
G-BIKI 'Rendezvous' (China)
G-BIKN 'Rendezvous' (China)
G-BMRE 'Rendezvous' (China)
G-BMRG 'Rendezvous' (China)
G-BIKJ 'Waves of the City (USA)
G-CPEO 'Whalerider' (Canada)
G-CPER 'Wings' (Denmark)
G-CPES 'Wings' (Denmark)
G-BIKF 'Wunala Dreaming' (Austrailia)
G-BIKY 'Primavera' (Romania)
G-BMRC 'Olympic Games Sydney 2000)

I think there was actually one or two missed out of the book, but I featured them in this earlier thread (Page 9) and with pictures too. And divided into those with RB-211-535C and 535-E4 engine types.
