Default September Gemini 1:400s

The P-8 and the United 777 are on my list this month. I may do the A380 also.

Based on the art I assume Gemini will be doing the aerials and domes on the P-8, which despite the inferiority of the mold compared to the Panda, will automatically make it a better P-8. I look forward to a side by side comparison.

Mmm, pretty lackluster batch. Maybe the British A330 and P-8 if it turns out nice.

The 3 GeminiMacs look good. However, neither of those fit in my airport. Will wait for NG's September releases.

Hard to get excited about this bunch. Nice to see an MD-80 but this one is outside my timescales. No AirCal, Frontier, TWA, SAS, Alitalia etc etc etc but a late version Aeromexico?

Or a Delta MD-88 in the 1990s Ron Allen livery! I don't remember anyone screaming for an Aeromexico Travel MD-80. Most of these releases look like they were already done in the past or other manufacturers are/have also releasing/released them.

I might get the UA B772 if it's done on the JC tooling. Patiently waiting for photos.

Agreed. But probably it will be the old cradle mould.

It’s a “meh” for me, nothing really special, I’ll take the MRTT from Av400 since in my shop it’s cheaper, and surely better. I’d like to see if they’ll make the antenas on the P-8...

I’ve been scouring eBay for the original AA 777-200 release even though the model itself is kind of lackluster. I always thought it was odd that they’d released several versions of the 777-300ER but never went back to do a good -200. Very happy to see this one.

The only must have for me is the Mad Dog. Anyone here think anyone BESIDE Gemini will make the United 777-2? I wonder if the GJ will be our only option.

I would have had the RAF VIP A330 but for the price - advertised in UK at nearly £47.95! As NG are also making this, I will wait to compare quality and price.

Indeed. Would love to see MD-80 AirCal, Frontier, New York Air, Republic. Will pass on late AeroMexico. Also, looking for more CV-580.

None for me this month. But I did get the some-months-ago Lufthansa new-livery 747-8 recently, and love it. (Not a great livery, but I want a representative, and this is a very good one!)

I agree on the MD80's. We also need to add Northwest and TWA to the long list, also Delta "Ron Allen" scheme and "Deltaflot"

Nope they didn't. They made a crap 737-300 and Phoenix made an qually crap DC-9. The only other NY Air 400 model is the excellent Aeroclassics DC-9

I would have hope that the next Aeromexico MD-80 Would be the orange striped livery from the late 80s, for example XA-AMO. Really looking forward to that one.

Found this batch to be pretty meh for me. We went so long without an Emirates too... imo I don’t like the Emirates models as they’re overproduced at times. I skipped this batch.

Yeah, they went back to the old 787 mould again... It is more than evident that they used the JC 787 mould last time (Qatar) just because they were releasing a flaps down version as well...
I wonder if they will ever consider sticking to the JC 787 and 777 moulds which are a lot better than the ones they currently have...

The mould sharing is confusing to me - but is it possible that the newer release is something that was made in advance and then held until now?

Not sure that an absolute like that is ever true. Obviously Panda has a questionable history, but it does seem like a lot of the historic companies in this industry do as well.

With that said, Panda's models generally don't fit my collecting interests so I only have the three P-8s. Trying to find more DC-8s, please make some more!

Obviously, as outsiders, we probably won't ever find out why they flip between using the newer JC mould and the older Gemini mould. What we do know is that they share the same factory to make their models, so it is indeed a bit confusing why Gemini wouldn't just streamline everything on the same moulds. One possible speculation is that JC reserves priority access to their own moulds, and during months when JC has their own 777/787 models in the pipeline, perhaps that's when Gemini doesn't get access to those same moulds.

Another possible speculation is that despite their factory sharing arrangement, there are higher costs incurred each time they use JC's newer 777/787 moulds over their own, outdated moulds. Perhaps this comes in the form of a royalty to JC, or simply higher manufacturing costs because of the more complex mould.

So many questions, yet so few answers in the dark and murky world of 1/400 collecting. As always, happy collecting!

I like these theories and wouldn’t be surprised if they were somewhat correct. It probably doesn’t help that a lot of people will keep buying these dated moulds thus giving them no reason to change permanently.

Even in this low res thumbnail shot it’s clear that the Gemini P-8 beats the Panda. Even if the Panda mould is otherwise superior in every respect...

Sometimes I think they're just 4 dudes in a garage throwing stuff together. 🙄
