Default New NG Models Mould & Review: Xi'an Y-20 Kunpeng

No you can't have a C-141 Starlifter ! But you can have 2 different Xi-an Y-20 Kunpengs. Yes it is a mould that unless you are Chinese you probably didn't know you wanted, but nonetheless the mass Chinese market has a carrying capacity beyond the West it seems and no doubt Chinese brands are proud of their nation's accomplishments. After NG acquired the mould Panda were using they have retooled it completely. So here is my review of the Y-20 so far in 1:400 scale and the new tooling:

I bought one of the Panda Models back in 2018. Nice model, a little crude with the wing cradle, but will definitely get one more with revised tooling. Look forward to it reappearing

And from your review: "It also shows the one weakness of the Y-20 - its Russian engines, which bear an uncanny resemblance to those of the IL-76." To that I might add, those IL-76 and Y-20 engines bear an even stronger resemblance to Pratt & Whitney's TF33-P-7 turbofan engines on the LOCKHEED C-141A/B STARLIFTER! Outta here, Doug

True the engines do look like those of a C-141 - ha ha.

Anyway I spoil you I really do. I've whipped together a short Youtube video of the sample mould too:

Is this just a updated version of the IL-76? Or a new design.

After watching this video, it kinda makes me long for a new BAe146 mould. Although Gemini’s isn’t bad, just don’t see too many releases. NG certainly is quite busy with all these new moulds. And thanks for taking the time to make the video . ToddCB

The Y-20 wasn’t even in my radar but given the accuracy of the mould and the expected quality on print graphics by NG... welcomed to my military aircraft collection it will be

I wonder how well it will do, even on the Chinese market? I was always under the impression that the Panda foray into this type was a bit of a bust.

That's what they said but I think the seam may have been a good part of the reason for that.

Maybe these guys can concentrate on all military 1/400. Just a suggestion!! They seem to be doing three versions of P-8 Poseidons! So why not carry on doing Government aircraft and then be brave enough to go down the Starlifter, B-52 and maybe the Hercky ( C130) route too.
They might aswell, considering most if not all model makers are primarily civilian!
