Default Western Airlines Livery History

Why not let some Wallybirds cheer you up in this bleak time. Western was one of the smaller US trunks but had a strong marketing narrative from the Chieftain to Bud-Lite. Here's the history of their schemes:

My favorite was the Flying W/Swizzlestick colors. My first 727 ride was with Western in 1979.

Richard, excellent write-up on my second-favorite airline. One small error though; the "shadow" under the red swizzle-stick on the 1985 "Bud Light" livery was a very dark blue, not black.

Cheers,

Dylan

It's a sizzle-stick after the cattle branding iron. Not a swizzle-stick.

I can't tell whether you're joking Fazeman!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swizzle_stick

However I agree it certainly looks like a branding iron with the W on it

It was done in jest for the folks who call it the swizzle-stick. This is because I know the nickname is very popular amongst the members here.

But, the upshot is kind of like putting the cart before the horse. For it is the branding iron that is iconic to the western United States. Also, the color red exemplifies things of the far west. And when I take into account that it was called "The Flying W," it further confirms to me that ranches have names with the word, "Flying." That is why I call it the sizzle-stick.

Come hang out with my ex-Western buddies here in SLC and see what they call it...

Hint: It ain’t Sizzle Stick.

Doesn't matter what they call it. Only matters what I call it. And I call it as I see it.

Come to think of your good sense of humor, if it doesn't have anything to do with swizzle or sizzle, hit me with it. I can always use a good laugh.

Steve, I'm old, gray, married with two kids, I've got nothing. My "wit" is gone, my penchant for being a troll is gone. The most exciting thing I've done during the 'rona lockdown is install a new mailbox.

Haven't touched a real airplane (real is subjective, as my "airplane" won't let me mess up and calls me a "retard" 3 times when I land) since March 20th and won't touch another one until June....and it'll probably just be the simulator.

Yep, main driving force these days is my lawn. And my mailbox. My mailbox is f#$&ing awesome!

Hope things are well with you....

Dylan, my hopes of hearing a dirty joke from your pilot friends are dashed.
Anyway, I hope you and your family are doing well during this lockdown. Are you still attached to the -12 NGX? Glad to know your new mailbox is reeking of awesomeness.

Holy Flashback, Fazeman! Haven't touched the Platypus in 7+ years. A little over 3 years ago I left the corporate/charter world to go 121. I'm on FiFi now with a ULCC. Best move I've ever made.

Wow! Time flies and congratulations on your move to 121 Dylan. Wait, are you talking this FiFi?

You've now caused me to go on a hunt for a four-stripe Chieftain 707, since I didn't know about that difference. I hope you're happy.

Wished I had copped this Wally Bird on Ebay some years ago. I missed my final bid because I fell asleep as the auction was coming to a close. Oh well, at least I got the pictures of it.

So, similar question to what we had about America West the other day. On the Chieftain schemes, was the top of the fuselage white or cream colored? Or both, depending on aircraft? I can't tell from the pictures I've looked up, and I never saw that scheme in person.
