Not a really special topic, but I just would like to hear your opinions.

Currently I am collecting KLM 747's in 1/400 and a few 1/200. At the moment I have 12 of 47 registrations. The problem is that not all registrations have been made and the ones I don't have yet, are ultra rare and very expensive.

Something I am considering to do is selling a part of my collection and try to get a 747 of every airline that have ever used it.
What would you do? Keep collecting your favorite airline, but you already know it's basically impossible and very very expensive, or change it to a more realistic goal but it's still your favorite aircraft?

Both options may be expensive, but I think you may find it will be more expensive to get one of every airline that had the 747 in their fleet. Would this new strategy be in 1:400, 1:200, or a mix. May want to consider what space is available for displaying unless you like rotating what you display.

For me, I have my core US carriers and ones I flew on. After that it is what I have seen or like, which after awhile I sometimes sell to keep things interesting and fresh as well as let other collectors get something they have been looking for.

! You beat me to it. Was gonna write basically the same reply. MANY airlines operated these types as new customer deliveries and then on the secondary used market. I may do a little research on how many have operated 747's to date.

Thanks to you for doing that! I most likely would still be dreaming about finding the Big Bird JAL & JAA DC-8-61 twin set if I hadn't come across your eBay listings by accident. You've got some hard to find gems. Next time be sure to give us a heads up in the For Sale section.

Maybe you've got some of those hard to find KLM models for Mark22.

I personally love variety so I would mix up the collection. Be careful as too many 1/200 can fill a house quickly!

I just made an Excel file with all airlines (according to Wikipedia) and I have a total of 156 () airlines which have ever used the 747. I included governments, NASA etc. A lot more than expected, and a lot of them have never been made in 1/400, so at least it will be an equal challenge to get them all

And like Habu968 said, some variety is the thing I am missing now. The only difference a normal person would notice is the white livery from the '70 and the light blue on the newer liveries.

But yeah, 35 KLM 747's to go... some of them only appear once in a blue moon on eBay, not even mentioning it being in good condition and the prices of around 150-200USD. And some have never been made

Let's say an avarage KLM price of 100USD with shipping. This would be 35*100 = $3500.
Against an avarage price of 60USD with shipping for every airline, which would be 156*60 = $9360

I guess KLM it is then

I think your average here is too high - There's currently 359 1:400 747s on Ebay for less than $40 - even a Braniff Dragon Wings one for $9.99 (and DW's 747 mould is perfectly acceptable IMO). Few more iconic than the Great Pumpkin.

Dont forget shipping, which varies from 10USD to 35USD 😉

Something else to consider is the fact that models can get damaged during shipment, something that you really don't want to happen after spending $150USD.

I am currently thinking about collecting other airlines and sell a few of my KLM's, can anyone change my mind, considering everything said so far?

I am trying to collect every 747 of every airlines and I can tell you it's much more expensive than you only collect KLM 747. For example, Varig, Avicana, Olympic 747 are the ones that are extremely hard to find and are really expensive. But I enjoy the fun of it as you get different varieties and they are eye catching!

BTW, I am curious which KLM 747 you are looking for?

Will do C141*Lifter...thanks for the compliment and glad I could help you with that DC-8 set and you are still enjoying it!

I wish I could help the OP and others, but don't have too much more in 1:400. I one time had all these KLMs and many other sought after models. I think a few collectors on here have some either from me directly or through Waffle sales.

Happy collecting all!
