Default Hope & Despair: Air Congo's Struggle

I love the history of African airlines, although I admit that is partly because they have so often been slow-motion trainwrecks and so are a lot more interesting for it. Few countries can claim the wretched history of the DRC but for over three decades Air Congo, later Air Zaire, held the nation's flight operations together:

Note: This piece was originally written way back in 2015 but has been thoroughly rewritten and since I've also added the Air Zaire DC-8 to the fleet too.

A throughly interesting read - although the history of both the airline and the country is just as thoroughly depressing!

A "Wee Jimmy" I used to know as a regular in my old Glasgow local pub, used to regale us with his tales of his days as an aircraft engineer for hire and his many trips to work for African airlines in the 1970's and 80's. Of particular interest were his stories of stripping aircraft down to inspect wiring bundles or hydraulic lines to be met with the sight of 'organic matter' growing behind the panels. I think I vowed never to fly an African airline right there and then !

Sounds like an interesting bloke to have known! Crazy stuff. The aircraft must have been in a right state.

Great read as always! Thanks Richard. I'm sure maintenance schedules were stretched to the max back in the day, maybe even now.
