Default Classic A320s: A Wishlist 1987-1995

It's hard to think of an A320 qualifying as a classic but I was only 8 when they started to appear so I guess that makes them old enough! It also turns out that the early years of the type are not very well represented in 1:400 scale. Take a look at these 26 from around the world:

Interesting study of early A320s there, personally I would love to see the BCal released currently only available in 200 scale. The Air India would be popular too, given the only airline to operate the distinctive double main wheel version.

Every airport will give their runways and taxiways pavement classification numbers or PCNs depending on their load bearing ability. Many airports in India (at the time), had low PCN hence Air India wanted a version of the baby Bus that was able to operate these routes. Most of us will know from basic school science that pressure is given by force per unit area. So by adding an extra set of wheels on the main bogie doubles the contact area and halves the pressure.

Nice article. My first sighting of an A320 must have been around the same time as yours, mine being a BA A320 at Newcastle operating the Heathrow service, which until that time was a mix of B757s, B737-200s and BAC One Eleven 500s.

I like some of the suggestions, particularly BCal, Excalibur and Inter European.

Air Inter -100 in both delivery and standard colours would be great.

As a Gatwick regular from the 1990's period I'd whole heartedly endorse the call for A320's for Excalibur, Cyprus Airways, Monarch, Inter European, Caledonian, Balkan, Tunisair and Conair.

There's a few more deserving A320's that could be made from the same era as well:
- Air 2000 (same scheme as the recent NG 757 release)
- AirTours (early 90's blue scheme without the red/yellow)
- Leisure Airways (the successor to Air UK Leisure)
- Onur Air (early 90's scheme)
- Translift (couple of different schemes for the Irish charter operator)
- Virgin Atlantic (operated to Athens for several years, Greek and UK-registered)

I'd be interested in Midway to represent "90's RDU Midway" in my collection. Also, I'd get the LACSA to represent that national-carrier livery. I'd like to see a 727 in that livery, but wouldn't turn down an A320.

I would go for those those too, but that's Indian Airlines, not Air India!

I'll join Rich in agreeing that early A320's, of the early 1990's, can be called classics. Though I was a little older when they took to the skies!

Aeroclassics, from what I can tell, has the best A320 mould. I hope they use it for more CEO classics. America West delivery livery is a great suggestion.

Amazing to think of the A320 as a classic when there are so many of them still flying around, that they are still in production and will be for many years to come!

Yeah - Boeing used to pretty much dominate sales, then along came Airbus and spoiled the party. Competition's a bi*ch, Doug

Maybe 5-6 of these will ever see the light of day, and be commercially viable for diecast.

I guess that depends who you are? Companies producing smaller runs like Panda and NG could do these easily. Even Aeroclassics could get most of them done if they targeted their sales. There are only one or two that I would consider not very viable. I mean this month's ACs have two hybrid DC-9s. They are viable but well known European charter airlines and various National airlines are not?

I might add Aeroclassics once made an Airworld A320 which is more obscure than BCal, Monarch and Excalibur.

I got one of those - 2nd hand on eBay. Perhaps I have the only one in captivity!
I remember Airworld which didn't last long before merging with Flying Colours and then being absorbed into the Thomas Cook conglomerate.
Used to see them at Manchester. Sufficiently obscure to pique my interest in the model. But not at full price!

Honestly I'm surprised there haven't been any RJ A320s as far as I know. Then again there are still a few other significant operators missing...
