Default A whistlestop tour of Phoenix's August Releases

Phoenix really piss me off. They rarely produce anything at all interesting and when they do it is usually mediocre. Its gotten to the point where I barely look at their releases but this month I really wanted to buy a couple - until I looked at them that is! Annoyed me so much I decided to take a whistlestop look at one third of this month's releases:

Out of 121 models, only 2 are Phoenix in my collection. Both are real gems. First I have a 2003 manufacture Aeromexico MD-83 that I just acquired finally this summer. Not sure who they shared the mould with, but a shame more MD-80s were not produced. And I have a 2006 era Thai Airways 747-400 that comes in a special box commemorating the end of an era of Don Muang Intl Airport's international flights service.

https://www.diecastmodelaircraft.com...6#.XUvc-XdFyUk

This 747-400 that Phoenix made in 2006 looks nothing like the ones they churn out these days, and it makes you wonder if the term "progress" is even in Phoenix's lexicon.

Good call. I was planning to get an A330neo. I compared both JC and PHX I found their colors are so different. I can't judge by only looking at photos on the net. Now you give me a heads up just on time. JC this time.

But wait, Rich. For Sichuan A350 the livery on AV400 and PHX are different, so you can't just get the AV400 and call it a day...

PHX used to have lots of top quality models, but all is history.

Yeah it's not quite the same scheme I know. I expect AV400 will make it soon enough.

They still have some decent moulds but it's been a while since a new one appeared and most of their older stuff has been eclipsed by others. The printing and QC are generally poor though.

Can anyone advise about the quality of the KLM 100 787-10 amongst these releases?

Their 767 is one of their better moulds - I picked this one up and it's quite good.

The PHX 787's are fine (they were the best at one point), but as Richard notes the 789 mould has been eclipsed by JC's newest and NG's as well. I haven't seen a back-to-back comparison of the 787-10's though. I got this one also and it looks good to me.

I would definitely avoid the moulds Rich points out in his blog though. And I agree that QC and color matching has gone down in general lately, but the two in question here seem to have been done well.

Yeah I'm not slating everything Phoenix does. The Prime 767s and KLM look ok though I admit I haven't really paid close attention. Phoenix's 787 is inferior to NG and JC but is still ok.

Not only is Phoenix blind, but their pretty stupid as well. Phoenix undoubtedly had the best 747-400 1:400 mould when they made simple edits to the aging AV400 mould. For some unknown reason, they abandoned that mould for their current one which is next to nothing and crap. You get some, and you lose some.

Is it me or do the winglets on the A330neo look horrible compared to the real thing? I get the exact shape is kinda hard to replicate but I don't think any manufacturer has done it properly now. May just be my eyes playing with me though

Couldn't agree more. So is their 747-300. I bought the Varig and it's now hidden inside its box.

I have tried with them, I continue to try with them (Phoenix) but the last model i picked up, a West Jet 787. It came missing a front right wheel on the main leg. The model looks good, but I can't with their QC and when you consider that along with the wilting competitiveness of their moulds, they just aren't what they used to be.

Somehow, I have the feeling that Phoenix will be the brand that disappears in the next few years. It all all so appears to be repetetive.

Somehow I doubt that. We may be thinking that as people that don't live in Asia. But something tells me these models sell like hotcakes in Asia, hence the repetitive nature of Asian airlines we see released over and over. There's probably a DAC like forum in a language other than English where Phoenix, NG, and Panda are all the rage. And forum members there probably speak about Gemini Jets like it's going the way of the Dodo bird. Just my speculation.
