Default What Dragon Wings are in High Demand?

I used to own the "Special Version" Dragon Wings Thai Airways A300 in the eBay link below. Got rid of it for about $40 about 10 years ago. Why is this model getting bid up so high now?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-400-Drago...53.m1438.l2649

With AeroClassics releasing much higher quality A300-600s, it's just puzzling to me that this Dragon Wings model would go for some much. With Dragon Wings not releasing anything in 1/400 scale in a very long time, might be interesting to hear thoughts on what other Dragon Wings models are still highly sought after.

Harvey, I think there are two reasons. Firstly the Aeroclassics A300 mould hasn't been used in ages and nearly all models are sold out, apart from the 'massed production of Pan Am releases'. They rarely come up on E. Bay. Secondly, this 'Thai Special' appears to have a 'grey' cheatline, but not aware of what that is all about? Therefore as always it's a case of 'supply and demand' and if no other A300s are available, the seller has a monopoly. However, that's a ridiculous price for any 1/400 model that I wouldn't consider paying!

I think the only one in demand is the 747 SCA with the space shuttle on it since no one has made a newer one. Hopefully NG decides to make this set in the future.

This is totally absurd & amusing to see these two buyers jacking up the price on this Dragon Wings Thai A300..

Maybe i should consider selling mine as well, especially since my copy is in way better condition, box is in Near Mint condition too! maybe if i'm lucky i'll get well over $1000 for it!

Bloody hell, I was expecting about £90 when I first read the post, then I clicked the link.

Maybe it holds some significance for those who are bidding on it. I know I'd pay somewhat over the odds for certain registrations that I've flown on but not by that extent. On that note, if anyone has G-CIVC going spare..

Well, it's not an aircraft that had an accident (several Thai A300s had crashes). An aircraft model of a plane that had an accident, crash or other mishap with fatalities usually become a morbid collectible.

Crazy right? It's a Dragon Wings model! I don't think I've ever paid more than 50 bucks for a Dragon Wings model. I have just one DW commercial airliner model left and it's one iteration of their United battleship gray B747-400s. As nice as it is, I still wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks for it.

I believe it was a one-off experimental livery. DIMA refers to this as a "Cathay Pacific hybrid" scheme. You're right, we haven't seen many AC A300s released lately. Can't even recall the last A300 release. Honestly, I don't have any A300 needs anymore, but I do remember the AC Thai A300s were really nice.

That's crazy. I have a couple of Dragon Wings models on ebay right now, not expecting any to fetch $653 though

I think Dragonwings deserved a bit high price for some models since this company was the very first company to produce 1:400 plane and still got some memorable collection and treasure.

I have a MAS B772ER (9V-MRD which is the same plane operating MH17) in 1:400 and in its special ‘Heliconia’ livery. It was the most expensive 1:400 I’ve ever purchased last time.

One of the only Dragon Wings I've got is the Royal Brunei A340-200.
Its quite nice, not sure if anyone else has done that.

The seller's other items are up for some rather optimistic amounts too.

i've replaced a lot of my Dragon Wings as well. Just a few left in the fleet at this point. They were great 10 years ago but are of poor quality for today's standards.

I couldn't imagine paying that much money for a Dragon model.

Thanks for sharing

True, DW are pretty lame compared to recent models, but I still like my military variants. Sadly my white DW C5 Galaxy had zinc rot so beware that batch. My others are still in great shape. Some photos for historical posterity. 747s, B1 bombers, A310, MRTT, B767s, and B707 AWACS, B29, EC121.

ttakata73 - your display is great with the different backgrounds for each level. Sparse airport accessories and vehicles with identifying tabs for each model work well - nice work. I have the same DW white C5 tucked away deep somewhere and will have to dig it out for a zinc rot check. Doug

Agree, DW had a great thing going with their 1/400 military models. With no announcement, the releases just stopped. There was an extensive list of what they had in their plans for 1/400 military models, but I can't seem to locate it on the web. The link below shows that an AC-130 was about to be released and I remember waiting forever for it!

1/400 Warbirds in Dragon Wings Warbirds Series

I also like the creative work you put into your display. Nice job!

Thanks, the backgrounds were fairly easy if you have Adobe Illustrator or possibly some other photo editor. Search Google images for airports with the highest resolution. Scale the image to a realistic size and print out on regular paper. In my case I printed 3 images and spray glued to thick stock. Then trimmed the cards so the images matched at the corners and taped the backs of the corners before putting in my cabinets.

The white nametags are 5mm square plastruct tubes with label maker stickers trimmed to fit. I never bought a label maker, but got mine free with a Brother printer. Now that I have one I can highly recommend its worth purchasing since its so useful to label/tag countless things and the label cartridges come in various colors, backgrounds, and heights.

Haha, I now realize I have to move my Cargolux 747; it's in front of a squadron of F16s.
