Default Atlanta's Modern Jet-Age Terminal

Opened in 1961, this turquoise paneled structure looked good with Eastern's original hockey stick livery planes out on the apron. It was replaced in 1980 with the now-standard midfield terminal design. And the hockey stick livery, designed for the newer jet aircraft, was also applied to remaining prop aircraft in the fleet, where it looks better on some planes than others... Keep 'em flying, Doug

Terrific photo! A great way to do a diorama on limited space.

I visited the Atlanta 1961 terminal in the last year of its service, on a family trip to Sarasota with my parents in (I think) sixth grade. We walked out to our Eastern 727's and DC-9's on the apron. The turquoise paneling looked great. I bought a postcard that is still part of my collection.

Thanks for the comments. I was in Chamblee, GA in 1974 for job training and during the weekends I hung out at ATL, and here are a couple of pix. I favored black and white because I could process the negatives and print 'em in my basement darkroom. Loved working in the dark and spent hours there, but the digital darkroom beats all. Doug

Should have labeled this thread 'My Eastern Airlines White Crown Hockey Stick Collection'. Here are five jets and the hockey stick cheat line pops - I'm stuck in the 60s. The collection numbers 16 models total, 7 more to post. Doug

I love your diorama photos Doug. I really, really like your Tri-jet B&W's. Is that an Eastern DC-9 on the way in? Delta has a funny history with wide bodies and the DC-10 in particular. They had the 10's in the early-mid 1970's. Then I think they went away for a few years, then came back again with Western. I always found it crazy, how DL had the 747,DC-10,& L-1011 all at the same time. Can you imagine the stores dept. in Atlanta, with the parts?

What a terrific Eastern collection, and great photos. I have a large Eastern collection myself, spread out among my 70's, 80's, and Rochester sections. I probably should put one in the 90's section, just to remind us they did make it into the second decade of Deregulation, if only briefly!

..... I had a flight on Eastern from Boston mid December 1990, which I think was pretty close to the end. I always liked Eastern and preferred it for my flight within the U.S. I'm sad I took no pictures on all my flights.

David: "I always found it crazy, how DL had the 747,DC-10,& L-1011 all at the same time."

Yup, Delta had quite a stable, and ended up ditching the 747 in favor of the other two, right? These two pix were taken at ATL the same day as the two above. I never cared much for the DC-10, thought the L-1011 to be the better airplane, although I never rode either. The DC-8s were a favorite, and rode them many times. Doug
