Default Cool Cool Cool!

Saw these last year at Luanda baking in the sun--excellent!

Now how about an IL-62 and a 707 to go with it?

I believe that tucano is releasing the TAAG 743 ... and the German company making the IL-62 is planning on that one. Don't know about the 707 though ... maybe ask Klein ....

Oh goody, another Tucano using their most-oftenly screwed up mold. I desperately want more 743's, but why does *Tucano* always have to make them?

Beautiful livery! I've never seen this one before, but it sure is attractive! Cheers to SMAC for doing obscure liveries!

He shoots, he scores! I'm going to consume a six-pack of Shiner Bock to celebrate this release. Manufacturers take note: THIS is what's called an imaginative and unique release!

Phew! Now that I've partially calmed down from the Air West 721's I can look at something else...

This is a really nice livery. Another sharp release from SMA! Bravo! However, I hear that the fellas from Jet City aren't finished rockin' the diecast world for this month yet...

Question

This may sound like a silly question, but what does the "TAAG" stand for? Does it come from a dutch root? I rather like the African trend among model makers, but know very little about the airlines of the continent.

(This is a very nice release Gordon. Thanks!)

David

Angola was once a Portuguese colony. The abbreviation "TAAG" comes from the original Portuguese name of the company which was adopted before independence from Portugal: "Transportes Aéreos de AnGola". The current corporate name was adopted in 1980 or '81, but the abbreviation "TAAG" was kept for identity reasons.

It's the national symbol of Angola, the giant sable antelope. This is distinct from the regular and more common sable antelope, a similar but significantly smaller animal. The giant sable antelope lives only in central Angola and was rediscovered last year by a zoological expedition after it had long been thought extinct after last being seen in 1972. The long-running civil war between the government and the UNITA rebels prevented any further study of the animal- when the cease-fire was signed last year (I think, or the year before), zoologists assumed the 30 year civil war had devastated most of Angola's wildlife, including this species.

The giant sable antelope is not only larger than the sable, it's got a different color pattern and the horns are impressively large, sometimes greater than 5-6 feet in length.

Cool Hey Doc! How about partial credit?

I knew that if you got around to it, you would have the answer!
Excellent report, by the way.

Wink

For you, Don, sure! But for Tucano and anyone else that makes a substandard model, there's no such thing as partial credit. You're either in the game or you're not. Cranking out a TAAG Angola Airlines Guppy puts you at the top of the game.

I need not list who's not in the game. Worse yet, those who think they're in the game but aren't even close.

This also not to be confused with the Oryx that Qatar Airways uses.
I have a small bronze of a Sable. I will display the Airliner near that or one I have at home.

Here is a picture of an oryx.

Just got this one at the LAX show, and it is outstanding!!! It's so different, and interesting-- and of course the mould quality and printing are as good as it gets! I highly recommend this one.

"I think this may be a Sable."

I agree, either the Sable or the similar-looking Roan Antelope. Both of these animals are sometimes called "horse antelopes" because of their general size and shape.

"The giant sable antelope lives only in central Angola and was rediscovered last year by a zoological expedition after it had long been thought extinct after last being seen in 1972. The long-running civil war between the government and the UNITA rebels prevented any further study of the animal..."

Great catch! It reminds me that an oryx-like animal (Pseudoryx nghetensis) was newly discovered in northern Vietnam near the PRC border in 1993. Naturalists estimated at the time that only 200 of them were in existence.

Maybe they'll discover a mokele-mbembe next! This mysterious brontosaur-like animal should be the symbol on the tail of LINA-Congo
