GJ 744 G-CIVB (Chelsea Rose) - England
GJ 744 G-CIVN (Delftblue Daybreak) - Netherlands
GJ 744 G-CIVP (Column) - Ireland

GJ 772 G-VIIA (Waves of the City) - USA
GJ 772 G-VIIJ (Benyhone) - Scotland)

I've been looking for that one to complete my list of BA Utopia 747 tails, also the Waves & Cranes (Japan) one. Together they make up all the officially done in 1:400 utopia 747 tails although there are (I think ?) a couple that were never done by anyone, Colum White being one that springs to mind.

Hi Big Al,

I accidentally found Waves & Cranes (Japan) on eBay last week and I snapped it up as soon as possible. I don't think there are anymore world tails left to collect. I believe the Yom al-Suq (Saudi Arabia) was never made in a 1:400 scale for some reason. It would be nice to collect that one. However I could be wrong.

Regarding the Column White, which one is that? I know there were 2-3 different versions of the Irish tail. I only have G-CIVP but I prefer G-BNLC.

Wasn't there a gentleman in the Channel Islands (IIRC) who specialised in BA 'World Tail' customs? For some reason the name Hugo sticks in mind, but it was quite a while ago.

I believe so. From reading different threads Hugo does come to mind but I've never contacted him.

I got two uncustomised BB utopia tails from Hugo, he'd stopped doing customs and just sold them on as originally purchased. USA and Hong Kong tails they were.

Big Al,

You previously mentioned about Column White?

Which was that tail and which aircraft was that on?

Colum White was like the standard Colum art but with a single white section amongst the other colours. I'll need to dig out my BA books to remind myself but pretty sure a 747 at least, sported it for a while. Never done in 1:400 as far as I can tell.

Gotcha now. I think G-BNLC 747-400 might have sported it. That was my favourtive Column tail. Instead I have G-CIVP, slight difference but its growing on me.

All of the available in 1:400 production models except Water Dreaming, Waves & Cranes. No customs, I did send a spare Gemini Chatham 747 off to a guy on here who said he did customs, he simply kept my model and the cash. I believe there's still a warning thread in the custom models section here.

Water Dreaming and Waves & Cranes are practically impossible to find anywhere in 1:400 scale.

That's terrible that a guy kept your model. Just keep searching eBay and hopefully one day a model will turn up!!

When you say of you have all the available 1:400 models, does that include the Swedish, Indian and Blue Poole tails?

Yes, I have all the 742's done by Big Bird, including the Chatham Dockyard example... ;-)

These do pop up but not very often. I managed to get both off ebay but is a few years ago, Paid premium prices £60+ each.

I'm after another 742 Chelsea Rose G-BDXK which has suffered some damage. Need the wings so can take it with fuselage damage.

Also do not forget the one sold /leased to Qantas (depending on your criteria)

I forgot about G-BDXB! When I find it eventually one day, it would mean that I have the entire BA 742 collection of world tails

Personally that looks a bit ridiculous with a BA tail a Qantas livery. I suppose I see Qantas jets everyday here in Melbourne that sort of puts me off.

I managed to pick up Waves and Cranes a couple of months back as well. It's funny you posting the list above, as I thought 'Water Dreaming' was the only one I was missing as well, but seems I'm missing Delfblue - Netherlands to, so better keep an eye for that one now

Hope the list helps you to find others. Just keep an eye out for Delftblue Daybreak.

I've always find it odd that Gemini Jets produced Delftblue Daybreak on a 747 G-CIVN, but if you compare the model design with the actual aircraft that flew with the tail, its completely different. I wonder why that happened?

I'm sure I saw the Gemni Delftblue on eBay (UK) the other day actually. There was a seller with several utopia tails up for grabs. The Geminis come up a bit more often than the Big Birds, that's for sure.

Good catch. I do wish they'd reissue some of those old Utopia releases on the up to date mould though. Some of those, including Delftblue had plastic vertical stabs and the unsightly tail seam/join.

I haven't noticed about the plastics vertical stabs. When I get chance, I need to double check mine.

I agree with you that they [whoever] needs to reissue some of the old Utopia tails but I wish they would release aircraft with the different world tails. Personally I would like to see:

734 G-GBTA – Youm al-Suq (Saudi Arabia
744 G-BNLA or G-BNLL – Chelsea Rose (England)
744 G-BNLC – Column (Ireland)
744 G-BNLJ – Ndebele Martha (South Africa)
744 G-BNLK - Water Dreaming (Australia) of course!!!

744 G-CIVC – Delftblue Daybreak (Netherlands)
752 G-BIKT – Crossing Borders (Egypt)
752 G-BIKW – Ndebele Martha (South Africa)
752 G-BIKY – Primavera (Romania)
752 G-BMRA – Paithani (India) slight differentiation to what G-BDXO wore

752 G-BMRJ – Grand Union (United Kingdom)
752 G-CPET – Sterntaler (Germany)
763 G-BNWU – Blomsterang (Sweden)
763 G-BZHC – Waves and Cranes (Japan)
772 G-VIIO – Chelsea Rose (England)
772 G-VIIP – Column (Ireland)

I know this is only a dream, but I can only wish

It does still seem an untapped market for someone. I'm not saying BA are the be all and end all of collecting, but there's a lot of us out there, so even if they only did a split run of 500 units of each tail they should shift them.

There are plenty of Deutche BA tails covered in 1/500 and 1/200 but not 1/400. Along with some tails never produced apart from Hugo Customs.

I would have liked just a representative tail of each.

Thanks Aviaction! I went through the Deutche BA fleet in the database to be honest they are nothing spectacular. When you said 'some tails never produced' do you mean for example an Italian tail or the Romanian tails which was worn on G-BIKY a 757?

Really? I always thought the DBA "Calligraphy" and "Pop Art" tails were kind of cool.

Good luck with your search. I believe eBay might have a Animals and Trees 777. I'll include it here:
Gemini Jets British Airways B777-200 "Animals & Trees Tail" GJBAW717 1:400

Waves and Cranes 747 might be harder to find, just have patience and hopefully one day it will appear.

I would recommend buying a copy of this

British Airways:- Its History, Aircraft and Liveries by Keith Gaskell, 9781840371420

ebay can be under a tenner.

British Airways: Its History, Aircraft and Liveries, Gaskell, Keith Hardback The 9781840371420 | eBay

There is a section on the utopia world tails and the registrations of planes that wore them.

Yeah great book that, just wish he'd do an update on it now. It covers BA up until the late 90's era.

Great collection! I've been collecting some of these too and hope that someday a manufacturer completes the set...particularly the 747s and 772s since Gemini/BigBird got close to doing all of them.

I think they released all of them except for:

B744 Benyhone (British Asia Airways, G-CIVB)
B744 Chelsea Rose (G-BNLA/BNLL/BYGA/BYGC/BYGF)
B744 Colum (White version, G-BNLC)

B772 Chelsea Rose (G-VIIO, VIIS)
B772 Colum (White version, G-VIIP)
B772 Delftblue Daybreak (G-RAES, VIIU)
B772 Rendezvous (White version, G-ZZZC)
B772 Waves and Cranes (G-VIIM)

(Not to mention all the 737s, 757s, 767s, 320s and regional aircraft that still need to be done!)

I'd also be keen on re-releases of the early Geminis and BigBirds, maybe with different regos where possible?

Good luck

I contacted Hugo a few years ago and sadly he mentioned they were no longer doing custom models. Please let me know if this has changed.

Hi Folks,
I'm Charlie - I used to do the custom models for my dad Hugo in Guernsey. Unfortunately for several reasons custom models became very difficult for me/us to do - I found my eyesight deteriorating and working on the detail needed became difficult, I then had a hard drive crash and lost 90% of all the patterns I drew up and my job (Teacher in Further Education) has progressively become harder and harder with greater and greater demands on my time (thanks politicians!).

Finally - and this may be hard for people to hear - my dad has developed vascular dementia - it was apparent for the last two years that he was not functioning as well as before and it's been a rapid progression since then.

There's no point in sending him any emails - he will not read them. Sorry guys.

Hugo had/has a massive collection and a huge stock - something like 10,000 models. To help my brother Paul and I have been selling his stock on eBay. His collection (including all the customs I made) is still displayed on his shelves, but the 200 odd 30 litre boxes of stock models is gradually going - they were deteriorating being stored in a glorified shed.

We do have several boxes of custom models, but they have deteriorated too - being kept in a shed with massive temperature variation and damp has not helped!

When I get time (college finishes in a few weeks for the summer) I will look at the models we have and any that I feel can be salvaged I will post links and pictures on here?

Sorry my first post is so long - but thought an explanation may help!
