Unfortunately for several reasons custom models became very difficult for me/us to do - I found my eyesight deteriorating and working on the detail needed became difficult, I then had a hard drive crash and lost 90% of all the patterns I drew up and my job (Teacher in Further Education) has progressively become harder and harder with greater and greater demands on my time (thanks politicians!).

Finally - and this may be hard for people to hear - my dad has developed vascular dementia - it was apparent for the last two years that he was not functioning as well as before and it's been a rapid progression since then.

There's no point in sending him any emails - he will not read them. Sorry guys.

Hugo had/has a massive collection and a huge stock - something like 10,000 models. To help my brother Paul and I have been selling his stock on eBay. His collection (including all the customs I made) is still displayed on his shelves, but the 200 odd 30 litre boxes of stock models is gradually going - they were deteriorating being stored in a glorified shed.

We do have several boxes of custom models, but they have deteriorated too - being kept in a shed with massive temperature variation and damp has not helped!

When I get time (college finishes in a few weeks for the summer) I will look at the models we have and any that I feel can be salvaged I will post links and pictures on here?

Sorry my first post is so long - but thought an explanation may help!
Hi Charlie, I'm sorry to hear about your dad and all the best to him and your family. Thank you for taking the time to let us know.

Hi everyone,

Thought I'll give an update on my search for G-BNLK Water Dreaming. Well good news, a person contacted me from the USA saying he has G-BNLK for sale. It arrived yesterday, so happy, another world tail of my list!

Congratulations on finding this rare beastie for your collection. Great to see you're also having such a good time on DAC. Best of luck now in finding ALL the other BA's you're searching for. Yay!

Well I finally scored me a Water Dreaming 744 today in Waffle's collection sales of all places. Not cheap, £89GPB ($123USD) inc DHL shipping to Scotland but I have some overtime payment this month and had to have it. A DHL e-mail tells me it'll be here on Thursday, that's pretty good going, from California !

Just need that all elusive Waves & Cranes 744 now to complete the set ! Oh and btw, Waffle also had the Big Bird USA tail 744 for $100USD (ex shipping)today too.

That's fantastic news!! Congrats on getting Water Dreaming. The other week, a guy who I had previously bought from, was selling water Dreaming on eBay. Not too sure if the model is sold or if the seller just removed the listing.

I had a quick look on Waffle and found their prices not too expensive until you get to the postage fee. I was wondering, are they normally expensive for postage?

Hah I was just about to say that Waffle's international shipping base rate isn't too bad, until just now I've received another text from UPS informing me of a £25 import and customs charge for an item that hasn't even left the state of California yet with a 'no pay, no delivery' threat attached. In my 15 years collecting and buying from overseas I've been hit with a UK customs charge about three times and it's always applied by UK Customs & Excise Dept, not a commercial shipping company. And it's never been anything more than half that amount either. I can only assume this rip off charge is now policy, and a nice little earner for the shipping companies ? Absolute disgrace and unfortunately enough to stop me shopping overseas.

Just been hit twice with Korean Oxford Brick kits. But just bought a hi fi component from the states. Made an offer which put it about £125 from £150 only to find when paying Paypal, ebay added a global shipping program duty of £25.

Ooof, that's rough Al. A couple of years back I got clobbered on everything I got from abroad, last year nothing. No rhyme nor reason.

Yes I imagine it's essentially half the money to Customs & Excise and the other half as sheer profit to the carrier. As I say 'a nice little earner' for the shipping companies and ebay under the pretence of collecting import duties most of the time Customs & Excise weren't interested in. I suppose those poor guys at UPS need to pay for those new 747-8F's somehow. International shipping has become a legalised racket in recent years, I'm surprised anybody bothers sending anything anymore.

Funnily enough though the eBay Global Shipping Programme means I can actually sell large models abroad. Sent a Corgi Lancaster to Singapore the other week for a third of the price that Royal Mail wanted and it arrived within a week, all tracked, all insured.

Thanks for the info Big Al. After reading your post, I think I'll just stick with using eBay. Shame as they were a few BA 732 I need to tick off my list which Waffle has.

Right then as of an hour ago I have secured the final piece for my collection, the Big Bird 'Waves and Cranes' 744 model on eBay from a UK address for a mouth watering price that could easily have got me a 1:200 744 and a decent meal as well ! But hey, the collection is now complete and I get paid again next week !

I buy from Waffle regularly and live in NZ. Of the hundreds of models I have bought from him I have only had customs issues once. If you are in Australia I don't think this will be an issue for you. This is a UK problem - for the time being at least.

Was that the ebay one?
I just went over £50 for a Harrods Concorde with damage. Sometimes you have to bid hard to get it.

That's the one, leapt up from a tasty £38 to over a £100 in the dying seconds, jeez !

Enjoy the Harrods Concorde, I got one a couple of years back for about £40, I was determined get a complete set of G-BOAA to G-BOAG and searched for that little beggar (G-BOAB) for ages. I even contacted Harrods to see if they had any lurking in the back shop !

I've received hundreds from Waffle customs tax free too, the problem here was that the international shipping option changed from USPS to DHL and they charged me straight away as is their policy. It probably also didn't help that Waffle put the ridiculously inflated collectors premium price I paid on the customs label. A more sensible, near retail price might have helped the situation. Those Big Bird BA 744's were around £35GBP upon release back in the mid 2000's. I don't really agree that declaring the premium paid as the item's value to DHL is strictly necessary when it comes to shipping. It added nearly another third of what I paid for the model on top in shipping/customs charges.

So here are the final two Big Bird BA Utopia tails I needed to complete the set. The pair has cost me over £200, much more than I would ordinarily pay for a 1:400 but what the hell, the collection is complete.

model 2

model 1

model 3
