Default Request for Aeroclassics: Britt Airways BAC-111

Republic DC-9's mention of Mississippi Valley Airlines in my Northeastern A300 thread brought to mind another aircraft I'd like to request from Aeroclassics.

Britt Airways was a commuter carrier in the Midwestern United States in the 1970's and 1980's. Britt ran a hub at Chicago O'Hare Airport. They briefly served as a Piedmont commuter carrier to serve the carrier's Dayton, Ohio hub. Then they were bought by People Express in that carrier's desperate overexpansion to gain competitive size in the mid-1980's.

Britt mostly flew a turboprop fleet of Swearingen Metro's, Fokker F-27's, and Beechcraft 99. But they notably acquired some BAC-111 jets as well. I once saw one of them taking off from the carrier's Terre Haute, IN home base.

Britt is a good representative of local service carrier history during the early USA Deregulation era. This type of carrier was trying to figure out where it would fit in the new order of things. Eventually, survivors of course would mostly become regional feeders wearing the colors of surviving consolidated legacy carriers.

The DiMA, DAC, and Aeroclassics databases do not indicate that anyone has ever done any Britt Airways aircraft in 1:400. My recommendation is the BAC-111, because it's the biggest plane Britt flew, Aeroclassics has the mould, has done numerous USA local-service-type carriers, and hasn't done this one. A Fokker F-27 in Britt colors would be welcome, as well.

Fourth!!!

My only Britt memory is being a 10 year old or so peeing at the old Cedar Rapids, IA airport spending an evening waiting for my dad to come back from a business trip - this airport had a bunch of mainline action or seemed to, and I was loving my stay but wishing I could fly again (I did not fly between 1981 and 1990, and had to earn $49 so I could fly a Midwest Express DC-9 30 min between Madison and MIlwaukee just to break the streak!).

Anyhow, as I was peeing, one ramper, also peeing, asked another "still working for Britt?" To which the other peeing ramper replied "yup".

It's funny what remember when airplane obsessed. In honor of these hard-working, urinating workers of the mid-1980s, and this priceless memory, please Mr.Klein, release this jet!

What a great story! I never shared a row of urinals with Britt employees, but one of my friends in high school flew the airline on a trip to South Bend, IN. She took People Express ROC-EWR-ORD and then Britt on ORD-SBN. This must have been after PE bought Britt. (Yes, I asked my friends their airline itineraries!)

I have PE timetables that show the airline crumbling. In April 1986, Britt is part of the "People Express Team uniting America with low prices," along with Frontier and PBA /Florida. The thinner November 1986 timetable shows the airline considerably shrunken--Frontier gone, but Britt and PBA still present, with a PBA Boston hub added.

Such a sad story. Had PE been better managed, the course of the next decade might have been different. A strong PE would not have allowed the consolidated legacies to get away with keeping fares high in so many places in the 90's.

I'd like one too but I'm sorry to say that as far as I know Aeroclassics BAC One-Eleven mould is defunct. I'd say you should be aiming this request at JC Wings but they have given up on classics so I don't think there will be any new One-Elevens anytime soon.

Shame because there are several I'd still like - like

Cascade Airways

Florida Express

Air Illinois

Bahamasair

I'd be up for Cascade and Florida Express, myself.

How does a mould go 'defunct?' A number more BAC-111's are needed, and Aeroclassics' mould would be preferable to Gemini's.

Sign me up for Britt and Air Illinois.

Britt just doesn't get the notice that it deserves, Pretty big operation at its height.

I'm not really in the know but this is business in China so anything can happen. Moulds get broken or lost in the various shenanigans that can go on between the various factories manufacturers use especially when they move producers. I recall that in 2011 Schabak lost access to all their own moulds for their 1:600 range when the factory making them went bankrupt.

I like the AC One-Eleven but in a couple of ways (engine size mainly) the JC mould is actually a bit better:

I'm really not a big fan of the BAC-111, it looks like the DC-9 had a ugly sister named BAC-111 but if I had more money then brains, then maybe, just maybe I would buy me some Bahamasair BAC-111...
