Default North Central Airlines

North Central Airlines is the fourth of ten airlines in domestic showcase #2.

With camera flash, it's hard to capture an indoor shot without upsetting the natural setting of a display . To get decent features of the aircraft, the background somewhat loses the mood with brightness and in this case, a background that really reflects the late fall twilight. Nonetheless, I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Up front features:

1) SMA DC-9-51
2) AC DC-9-32
3) AC DC-9-10 (Fittingly, this space would have been filled with a Convair 580, but as all of us know, no manufacturer has produced one).

Background:

1) Northwestern Telephone Bldg Minneapolis, Minnesota by InFocusTech.
2) Stone Dairy Barn Merton, Wisconsin by Ertl.
3) Mallard duck by Hagen Renaker.
4) North Central Convair 580 pin, ticket, DC-9 photo and Mt. Rushmore.

Another great diorama! I have the SMA DC-9-50, among 70's models near my left arm as I type. I have the Netmodels DC-9-30, but would like to get an AC model.

I've been to Wisconsin numerous times to see friends there since 2000, wish I had seen the North Central glory days there! North Central Convairs served my dad's hometown in Michigan when I was a kid. Somewhere at home, I hope I still have the little postcard-sized maps North Central provided of DTW and ORD.

Fortunately, we at ROC got Herman for a few years in Republic colors before they merged with Northwest in the late 80's anticompetitive consolidation.

SMA filled empty gaps with quality models. Love their dash 50. I bought a Netmodels Playboy -30 but sold it, not due to quality, just didn't want to see it on my tarmac.

Wisconsin is a beautiful state and I manage to include a Packers game when visiting there. Also did a lot of ancestry research on my mom's side of the family. Many settled in Colby. I never had the luck of seeing or flying North Central/Republic like you, but enjoyed reading its history. Couldn't believe what the airline went through during its early days; shoe string budget.

The closest thing I have to a postcard-like map is a 9" X 7" Ozark linen map. Don't know if that was like North Central's.

Awesome display, Fazeman! As a Wisconsin resident (I'm about an hour's drive from Green Bay, Milwaukee and Appleton), I'm a big North Central lover.

Of course, Republic is my favorite, as I have pleasant childhood memories of flying their DC-9s and seeing their Convairs in service. I love looking at old timetables and seeing how they flew their planes between airports that could be easily driven between (or biked between!).

My dad and I flew one DC-9 Minneapolis to Eau Claire, then on to La Crosse - I think the -30 series had like 10 passengers! And Green Bay was once a jet "hub" of sorts. Now it is mostly regional jets and a Delta 717 into Appleton that serve my neck of the woods, though Allegiant, Sun Country and the occasional Packers A330 charter up to Green Bay do fly low over my house, and JUST a few years back I flew a Northwest DC9-50 Green Bay-Detroit for work (N777NC - a North Central ship!)

It was my great pleasure to fly on North Central from 1962 through the early 1980s (Republic era) on business. The picture of a DC-3 is one I flew on from Saginaw, Michigan in the 1960s.

I love how they've drawn the Wisconsin state boundaries on the Ozark map - rest of states look about right, Wisconsin is way off

I never took bike-like hops and I guess that's why I'm amazed they did it especially with jets. North Central had no choice but to cross every river and dot every town between major cities. High frequency scheduling and quick turnarounds helped to mitigate low load factors while the airline continued to apply for nonstop authority between their region's big cities. Hat's off to Hal Carr for the airline's success.

If I attend a Packers game this year, let's hook up. Maybe we can do some rail spotting.

I read that North Central's unusually high DC-3 load factors gave them the lowest mail pay rates in the industry. So the airline had proof of what C.R. Smith once said about the DC-3: "It's the finest airplane in history that can make money just carrying passengers."

Thanks for the compliment and from other members as well. Even though Allegheny and Piedmont served my airport (ORF), I didn't get a real dose of regionals and nationals until I flew to Denver's Stapleton in '79. Pretty awe struck while passing through there.

Sure thing - they're actually busy laying track on a new extension from my town (Plymouth) to Sheboygan Falls - sure is weird to see a rail branch under construction that had just been weeds for 20+ years, but real cool to watch.

After you mentioned this construction, I had to read what was going on. This mostly state funded development looks to keep companies like Bemis Manufacturing and Kohler Company on competitive footing. Also looks to entice other companies and intermodal business. I give this development a big thumbs up.

Since working for Kohler Co. Pays for my planes, and we buy parts from Bemis, I totally agree! Currently, hopper cars of plastic are parked 1 mile from my house and vacuumed into trucks for transport. It sounds silly to those who associate Wisconsin with cheese, but it is huge business in Plymouth (Sargento, etc). They are putting up 3 new warehouses as I speak, some along the rail line.

Back to aviation, the PGA tournament is this summer and our local airport will be swamped with private jets. I've flown on the company Lear 45 out of there before - that would be a tiny but cool 1:400 model.

One only has to take a closer look to understand that Wisconsin goes far beyond cheese. Heck, the land that Chicago sits on used to be part of Wisconsin!

Oh, back to aviation. I've never flown on a company/private jet, but I figure it's gotta feel like a hot rod of sorts. For my eyes, I need a 1:72 Lear.
