Default Shopping On EBay For The Last Time

I have had it with shopping on EBay for good.
Bought a Cathay Pacific 747 from a seller in Hong Kong.
Shipment arrived with a broken horizontal stabilizer.
Filed a case under EBay's Money Back Guarantee. They awarded my money back only if I paid for return shipping with tracking. I found out that return shipping from Canada to Hong Kong would cost me $90.00. Told them I refuse to spend $90.00 to get back $50.00.

Is it broken in half or just dettached from the fuselage?

I don't buy anything directly from China, too much hassle.

The tab for the horizontal fin broke off and is still in the slot. Gluing it might work but it will easily snap off as soon as a little pressure is applied.

If it is not worth to spend that much to get a refund, gluing it back is the only way out.
$50 and $90 are in HKD? Getting only HKD$50 for a CX model seems a bit low IMHO

I think I had enough of ebay once I ran into listings for (relatively available) models that were 3-4 times higher than what retailers were offering it for. In the past, I've not hesitated to send a message to the seller pointing out this pricing discrepancy, but don't think I ever got a response.

Unfortunately it is US dollars. Basically it means I paid US $50 plus shipping for a broken model which in my opinion is now worthless.

Nothing like a "brick-and-mortar" store where you can see and feel the product you are buying, or a retailer who has earned trust, and there are quite a few good ones on this forum if you follow regularly.

Peter, save your $$$s and do what I do when stabs & strakes go awry:

Carefully, and preferably manually, mini-drill out the remaining root, and, if the model is a Phoenix, scour the planet for a replacement part.
If it is an Aeroclassic or Gemini, a replacement should be no problem, a spot of good glue, and a lifetime of enjoyment !

My story is almost identical to yours Peter. I ordered two Phoenix A330's on Ebay. The seller shipped them in a box basically the same size as the model boxes. No padding at all. One arrived OK,the other was damaged beyond repair. No problem getting my money back if I shipped them back at my cost. Even though the problem was the inept packing job of the seller. Now I only order from stores like Jetway for example. If I buy on Ebay,I know if anything is wrong with the item,I am stuck with it due to outrageous shipping cost to return.

I agree with your brick and mortar store comment but my local supplier Aviation World in Vancouver is only selling a very limited and unreliable number of models.
Attached is a picture of the last model I tried to carefully glue together.
Not very pretty to say the least but downright ugly.

Kitty Hawk,
I order all my AeroClassics from Zareh (Airplane Replicas).

I ordered a Witty at Australia, jetbreaxth. They shipped junk to me, the airplane with horizontal stabilizer off, all antenna pop off, no pitot tube and etc are unacceptable. They said mailed back. The mail fee is $80 which it is more than refund. They took advantage because of oversea. I asked for small refund, no way. Never buy from jetbrexth again, very bad company.

..... Maybe buy your Cathay Pacific models from Hong Kong here:
CXcitement
..... I never had any problems. Shipped via DSL so may be costlier, but it is insured. Since you pay by credit card, that is also a buyer protection. Save on shipping by buying more models. The models are all Herpa so if you like or hate Herpa, that would be your only real consideration.

Not sure if I follow your logic. Ebay didn't do you any disservice, Canada Post did. At least with eBay there is Money Back Guarantee and it is only fair to both parties that after the refund the other side receives the broken goods with certainty of registered post.

EBay claim that their Money Back Guarantee is free. This is not true. They should say it will cost you return shipping with tracking.
What is wrong with sending a photograph of the broken model ?
I even suggested that I would pay for shipping locally and they could take care of shipping it back to Hong Kong if they were worried about a false claim.

I think you need to rethink buying on Ebay, there is no better pricing and no better selection than on Ebay and if your careful who and where you buy from your usually ok. I buy and sell on Ebay, get trains from Japan all the time and the price is unbeatable, the shipping is fine, a little slow but fine overall.

Plus Ebay protects you about as good as they can. They cant just trust you and give you a refund if your not willing to send the plane back. They try to walk the middle ground and usually protect the buyer much better than seller actually, but they need you do be willing to send back the supposedly defective item.

All that said, is it actually broken beyond repair ? , or can it easily be repaired and look pretty much just like new.

I have had a few items come in to me in questionable condition and usually the seller is willing to give an adjustment to avoid a negative comment and low DSR rating from you, but you have to be reasonable, I also never heard of anything costing $90.00 to ship anywhere in that size range to ship anywhere.

I have also been on the other end of it, with a guy that purchased a double I had of a very hard to get military jet 1/72 scale, he got it and said it was destroyed, I didn't think it could be, but he said it was, so he shipped it back, got a refund and when I got it, I had it repaired and in my collection in under 15 minutes, It was not destroyed, fully and easily repaired.

Just my two cents :-) SC

It might be true for trains and other collectible but I would beg to differ about model airplanes. There are more than enough sellers and selection on the five forums. Very few sellers can beat prices offered by Waffle Collectibles in their Collection Sale. The only advantage EBay has is maybe a bigger buyer and seller base.

Are they really protecting you ? Or is it a false sense of protection knowing that nobody of sane mind would spend additional dollars to recover less than what they can recover. (Only true for Canada). There are other ways of proving damage without returning it with tracked shipping.

If your read the earlier post, it can be repaired to look cosmetically acceptable but it will not be structurally sound. Mute point because I did not pay for a repaired model.

And what did the buyer end up with after spending money on return shipping with tracking ?
Absolutely nothing but a bad experience.
You on the other hand spent absolutely nothing and you still have your model.

Can you tell us if you think it was packed properly and the shipping company was at fault?
Or did the package arrive nicely but the seller sent you a damaged item?
If you think the seller sent crap or did a lazy job packing, please tell us their eBay name so we don't buy from them.

This is exactly why I don't purchase anything like this directly from overseas, I'd rather pay a little bit of markup and get it from a retailer here in the USA. I've heard way to many problems with getting things from China, from the wait time, to the packaging and damage to the piece.

Did that and was told that I already had a case opened with EBay.
In case you do not know, Ebay bought out Paypal a while ago.

Yeah, knew that. In ebay.com.au, it will automatically tell you to lodge via paypal if you paid using it.

I wouldn't recommend this but I guess you could say you didn't receive the item. Normally there is no way the seller can prove they sent the item. This is somewhat dishonest but there was one time when I didn't get something for a long time, lodged a claim through paypal, got my money back and then the item arrived. I repaid the seller in that case. Of course, it won't work in your case as you have acknowledged receipt.

At other times I have been able to get part refunds from sellers for broken items that can be repaired. For example, I got a Phoenix SIA A330 with a loose horizontal stab. The seller gave me a good discount, I glued the stab back and everyone was happy.
