Question Who are the youngest on the forum...

Who are the youngest on the forum who collect 1:400s?

I know a couple who are under 16 have switched over to 1:200 I know Gimala is under 16 too, but i was wondering if there are any other young(er) active collectors of 1/400s?

BTW how young were you when you started to collect?

In all seriousness...
It seems the age varies quite a lot. I fit into the middle there somewhere but interesting to see who is actually the eldest!!!
We could call him or her the DAC Elder.

I'm glad that i didn't start to collect until 2011 thereby avoiding the temptation of getting the woosters, flight miniatures, decal models, skyline (i think) & other sub par production lines

As a side note: speaking of immature, just for spite i want to send an email to a specific retailer, to show the money i have spent on models in the last three months....someone who threw a tantrum about something that had nothing to do w/ him (to my knowledge)

I dont think age matters in collecting. Age =/= Maturity for sure. I had some models as gifts when i was <10 years old, but i only started getting them myself when i joined DAC and had my own income

Agreed...

I started 'collecting' when I was 7yo, matchbox planes and the like, I still have around 3,000 models from the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's when they were okay, not great tho. I can't bear to part with them, but at the same time, don't waste any cabinet space on them either. They currently 'live' in two dozen or so 'file boxes' in the spare room. Started collecting 1:500 scale in the late 1990's and switched over to 1:400 in mid-2000's.

Tho I'm still a collector of HO/OO and narrow gauge trains (Narrow gauge in that I own a 2 foot narrow gauge 1:1 quarry loco!). I tend to go crazy with collections as I've never been a drinker or smoker nor ever bothered with gambling. So lots of disposable income!!! Helps that my wife is also a mad keen collector of 1:200 planes too!

Lou

I started collecting 1:400 when I was about 18 after first seeing them on display at the aviation store on the viewing terrace on top of the Queens Building at LHR. I bought a Dragon Wings Braniff B747-100 and Gemini Jets BA 'Scotland' tail B747-400.

Prior to that, it was Wooster and the like from when I was about 6, by which time I was already into planes. Those models were usually purchased on board when flying with Orion, Britannia, Dan Air, etc. on family holidays. I always used to give my parents and grandparents orders when they flew too! I am happy that some of the treasured models I had back then are being done now in 1:200 diecast, so I can replace some of my long lost 1:180/1:200/1:250 plastic models with high quality diecast equivalents.

I started collecting at around 12 years old, back in 1995. Back then it was Wooster and Long Prosper models. I moved on to Herpa 1:500s then in 1999 when GJ started 1:400s, I bought my first one of those...a BA 744 in the Dutch 'World Tails' livery.

Started collecting "Dyna-Flites" when I was 6 years old. That was 30 years ago.
Scale varied per aircraft. a 727 was almost as big as a 747. But it was fun. Internet was a fantasy so there was no forum to join for many years to come.

Like Assknocker, I got my start at age 5-6 with Dyna-Flites.

Gosh, I loved those things! Not just the airliners, but the other planes as well. Remember "Good Goose" Assknocker?!

I remember a lovely Singapore Airlines 737-200,a Braniff 747, others. I've thought about trying to collect those again as well.

But I moved onto Schabacks (ugh!) And eventually a plastic model or two before the fateful day when my wife and I walked (HOT!!!) From the Bellagio to the Gemini store in Vegas about 5 years back. I left with a Republic 727, a Northwest DC-9, and a Braniff Flying Colors 727 in green. It's all been "downhill" from there - I've sworn off future 1:200s after amassing a small collection of those, and am now focused on the jewel-like quality of the 1:400s. I collect N scale trains for the same reason.

Glad to see younger people join the hobby and keep it alive - I often wonder what advances lie ahead? 1:200s with full interior detail? HUGE models with working electric flaps and sound effects?

You may think I'm crazy but in my short lifetime I've seen model trains advance in directions I'd never imagined (detail, DDC, etc).

It's a great hobby - even the antics and personalities of some of the DAC members and manufacturers add some interest as this hobby' s history unfolds!

I've always been passionate about aviation and as such received a couple of 1:400 models for birthdays/Christmas etc. when I was around 10. I didn't really get involved in collecting them, however, until I was17.

I remember I was bored in the September holidays and was browsing eBay and I came across some Qantas models. For whatever reason, they really sparked my interest and soon after purchased a couple of 1:400 models.

The 1:200 bug bit me not long after, and once that did I found myself in Dac, eagerly awaiting the new releases. Now here I am at 19 with around 60 1:400 models and 40 1:200 models, all of which I am proud to display.

My collection of "miniatures" started in the very early 1960s, when the airlines used to give out small diecast plastic models, some of them fairly accurate. I stored them in pipe tobacco tins, and therefore they survived to this very day. TCA, later Air Canada had quite the nice assortment of Connies, DC-8s, DC-9s, Viscounts, & Vanguards. BOAC had a lovely gold colored Super VC-10. Northeast had a yellow colored DC-9, and the list goes on and on. I will photograph them someday, as they are the beginnings, of a collection which now counts well over 6,000 models of many scales & sizes.

The first "metal" models were Dinky Toys Canadian Pacific Britannia, BEA Viscount, BOAC Comet-1, Air France Caravelle, Avro York, and an Air France Connie. I had those in the early 1960s too, but have "upgraded" them to better quality pieces over the years.

Got my first AeroMini's in the later 1960s thru Air Canada's mail order, a DC-8/61, & DC-9.

I could go on forever; love this stuff!!

I'd love to see those photos Andrew - it's pretty obvious that you have a passion for model planes and classic airliners and that has translated into many excellent 1:400 pieces (i like my Gemini jets but Love my Aeroclassics).

Keep cranking them out - there are still many awesome classic airliners and liveries just begging to be done.

You mean like the juvenile who started this thread in similar fashion to his mentor, Gimala?

Here is the link to one of his latest moronic posts in an attempt at being a keyboard warrior. Notice how his 'copy and paste' skills have improved since becoming a DAC member?

No disrespect intended, but really, what purpose were you trying to achieve with that thread? Haters gonna hate, but neutral third parties will weigh in and see a side of a person that is uncouth, unbecoming, and uncalled for.

I joined the forum when I was 11 last year, but I don't think age is very important in this hobby. It's the age you act which is.

Awkward situation for me, because I'm more of a W900 guy. I actually was looking at that site for nearly four years before I joined in 2011. Then I made an account here on DAC a few months later, but then forgot the passwords for both, so I made a new account for both Wings and DAC, and later 400SH, in 2012. I started collecting when I was 9 or 10-ish. My first model was a GJ FedEx 757-200 1:400, a Christmas gift from my Gram-ma-ma. Now I have about 15 models in a mix of 400 and 500 scale. I have so much extra money right, so I am definitely going to get more planes...

P.P.S. I have two Herpa 1:400 vehicle accessory sets and winter service vehicle set. Pretty proud that I got some before they became sold out...
