BigBird is known for paint chips and zinc rot, though I've never seen something that bad.

Rest in peace.

Looks like uncontrolled decompression. Or the poster model for zinc rot - never seen it quite so complete and devastating - this is every collector's worst nightmare. Sad. Later, Doug

Maybe it cracked because it was so ugly to begin with.

Sorry, just couldn't help the comment, I hate cartoon planes...but I feel your pain at losing a prized model in your collection. Interesting that the wings weren't affected, but the fuselage must have been from the contaminated parts bin.

Duct tape will fix that right up.

Seriously though, that is a very sad sight indeed. If you bought that from a dealer then contact them and see if they will give you a really good deal on a replacement from the next Phoenix model releases. If they don't then I will offer you one for $23 (below my cost) plus shipping, just email me at 'Nick@jetwaymodels.com'

National Airlines This is the greatest concept since modeling scale airports - definitely outside the box. What's next to be broken up in the boneyard? Later, Doug

Actually I have! There is a Zinc Pest thread around these parts that has another Big Bird release, one of the JAL Disney 747s where the aircraft literally just ended up cracking apart in half.

Yeah, this is one of the brands affected badly by the Zinc Pest of 2002/2003 that also affected other players who used the Witty factory.

Beautiful scrap job r3500vdp. Still, would've like to have seen the engines on cradles and other salvageable items already missing and aircraft on blocks. Desert base paper and other such items can be purchased at Hobby Town USA for the ultimate scene.

Airkuro's Big Bird has the perfect hogging affect and other decomposing attributes for your scrap operation. Definitely a poster child for Big Bird's corporate customers to see before shipment to your boneyard.

Sorry, but any toon jet is a tragedy...they're all just well, grotesque. At least Braniff went high art when they decided to use graphism on their aircraft. They went to Alexander Calder. JAS tapped Kurosawa.

But for all the "toonies" out there, rock'on, enjoy, but please don't encourage these flying up-chucks. :)

Recently, I was accosted by Hello Kitty hostesses for making fun of their cartoon airplane. They promptly escorted me to the back of the plane while accusing me of being a stuffed shirt. For my penance, I was forced to eat nine Kitty meals and...Uh huh, huh huh...:p:o

Yeah, but it is the same factory. Opinions will be obviously different here, but I think buying models (and the brands who used this factory at the time are well documented on DAC) from there made outside 2002-2003, you should be fine, as the Zinc Pest is not a HUGE issue outside those years from what I can see. So generally you should be safe unless another bad batch of Zamak comes in.

Buying a model from that factory, during that time (2002-2003), it is a massive calculated risk. That is a shame, as a lot of "Holy Grails" on people's lists were produced there and then, and these are models that even today, have people paying some big bucks without even thinking of the well documented threat that these will turn into dust within a couple years time!

That is what I advocate and strongly recommend!!

Those zinc-rot models of many years ago were made in this factory, and not entirely by accident it seems. The owners haven't changed, therefore, I for one, wouldn't give them another bloody Penny of my money after the way they screwed us ALL over once before!!

Like the old saying goes; "Cheat me once, shame on you! Cheat me twice, shame on me!"

I got on the DB and searched to see when my AC/LC Varig 743 and 744's were made. 2005 apparently. I would die TWICE if this were to happen to my two most treasured models in my collection!

Most of the other "zinc pest" issues I've seen are usually just bubbling paint or cracked paint, which is a drastically different (but highly annoying, and far more frequent from personal observation) issue in the hobby. Unfortunately, both of those also happen to be symptoms of Zinc Pest, but they're not necessarily tell tail signs in most cases. The most obvious sign in most models is when you have the wings on your model trying to flex on their own. Granted, the natural first reply, or even opinion in the opening post is that it might be Zinc Pest. But you don't know until you start seeing your model really deteriorate.

Even then, I've noticed most of these issues outside the 2002-2003 Witty factory plague have been highly isolated and not necessarily consistent.

This would be nice. Witty has some nice models. Its a380 weighs nearly double than that from PHX. Quite interesting.

Well, Weight isn't everything (unlike in model trains where that is a huge buying point (it adds to traction ability)).

A very good example here,
I've seen people talk down Dragon Wings on weight alone, even though they are said to still have the best L1011, MD-80 and have some respectable 747s, DC-10s and 727s out there too! I'd rather have a light model of an airliner with their features done something resembling correct rather than one that is pretty off the mark and weighs as much as a computer monitor.

The weight also has little in regards to the Zinc Pest in our case. The Zinc Pest is a impurity in the metal (too much Lead impurity, and the dominant element in the metal used, Zinc, doesn't react well with Lead in this case. This causes a deterioration over time that is rather quick.)

Well, you can save the models with paint bubbling. But it will require careful work, if you can't save that paintjob, then I guess you have a doner for a new custom model (well trying to see things from the bright side of course.) So unlike the Zinc Pest, it shouldn't deteriorate to dust like that.

Yup, and that is why being an informed collector before giving up ~$100 USD for that holy grail is a good idea. Sure it may be the type and livery you want, but is it really worth it when it could turn to dust next year? Believe me, there are some models I flat out avoid simply because of that threat, and these are some that I would have otherwise payed some good money for (FedEx 737-200, LOT Tu-154B2 "Aeroflot Hybrid", just to name two right off the top of my head.)

In many cases it can be saved if you can match the paint color. The biggest exceptions would be if it bubbles up right under a window or a small printed area.
