This discussion is all political.....
I'm in the hobby for collecting and not politics.....
So yes its good to see another manufacturer - whether re-invented or new really does not matter in the long run.....its all good for the consumer.

I think the point is that there is not another manufacturer but rather a current and past manufactured who has changed the name or invented a new brand of something that used to be called something else which you no longer see offered for sale. Apollo will last for a few months and then the name will change again. Here today gone tomorrow will the likes of Phoenix, Gemini Jets, AeroClassics, and Herpa remain. Even Dragon Wings seems to be a thing of the past these days.

I just received the Apollo Lufthansa 747... ugly nose and cockpit windows.
Don't know about you but to me there is a difference between "wrong" and "ugly".
The windows on AC DC-10 may be wrong but not ugly at least, and we can live with it.
The windows on this horror by Apollo are UGLY!! aaaaagh!!!!
Is this really a BigBird mold? Even if it is, the window print killed the whole model.
It reminds me of cockpit windows printed on LH 747-200 toy-model sold on german ebay for 10 EUR, Starjets or something.

The cockpit windows do appear odd but I wonder why the Lufthansa appears larger than the BA? The Lufthansa gear, which I like, appears longer and the cabin windows both larger and higher. Almost as if the Lufthansa is somewhere in the 1:397 or 1:398 scale.

It looks fine to me. If you bring PHX 747 models into your collection, there would be no room to criticize this mould. Yes, the printing may not be the best, but I would welcome this into my collection. This is my opinion. Fire away.

Unless the two examples are not nose to nose then then Lufthansa appears to be a larger scale than does the BA.

The frontal landing gear is large, elevating the nose up. The back sits at same elevation as BB400 model. That's what happens when the budget per worker is not 1 cup of rice a day (as with bigger brands like GJ & AC), but 1/4 or even 1/8 cup of rice a day, which Apollo appears to be.

I see what you mean. It does seem to be a scale or two bigger than the BA model.

Model Power made a model of the Aeroflot Tu-144. It was 1/395 scale and close enough for me to be 1/400 but if this Apollo is indeed anything more or less than 1:400 scale, as the picture appears it to be, then the Exactos here will crucify it.

AND if this is the old BB mould, with years of use, the mould wears and the ID or inside diameter gets larger. This could be the case with the nose section looking bulkier.

Guys you missed it: size is the same as BB, the elevation is higher do to nose gear.
The major problem is far not the scale which is ok, but the mother-ugly nose.
When it comes to Lufthansa (no matter what mine or yours origins are, it is Lufthansa), I can't accept ugliness.

Yes, I see the nose gear is completely different, thus making the model higher in the nose section. As far as the shape of the nose, It is bulkier, I just don't see this being that bad. Tell you what, I will send you my address by pm, send me the model and I will proudly display it in my collection.

Again, due to the nose gear placing the front end up high. Hell, display it on a stand in takeoff/landing position whichever you prefer.

I'm not really bothered with its "heavy-tail" angle, only the nose & cockpit window print bothers me, but it bothers me quite well I shall say.
Anyway, the Herpa's "Dusseldorf" and the Phoenix' "Bremen" versions have not been beaten with this Apollo model.
I'll keep it because it's Lufthansa, if I had 40 models of Air China - I would've given them all to you free

Haha! Thanks. In the end, just enjoy it. It's a different rego and having said this, with LH retiring their 744's as they receive their 748i's, the chances of this being made were pretty slim you know.

Well, I'll receive my Apollo LH Jumbo together with Phoenix's LH A343 tomorrow and I am more than dispappointed so far. I was really looking forward to get this model but I totally agree with alexzar14 statement that this nose is just ugly. Nevertheless I will also be happy with this item because it's one more piece of my growing Lufthansa 1:400-fleet and as long as their are no such bad quality issues like with my Phoenix Lufthansa A333 I just can live with that. BTW...I don't see a fast phase-out for the remaining and newest 747-400's even after No. 19 (748) will be delivered to Lufthansa. So let's hope for a more accurate model of this work horse doing a great job for Loofthansah since 1989.

And this is acceptable to you??? I'm sure as a LH collector you have the PHX abomination. In comparison, this Apollo version is the centerpiece of a Lufthansa collection compared to this abortion!

Hi plane737, as so many times I also had the Phoenix version of Lufthansa's 747-400 in my hands at the Aviation Center in Berlin and I didn't buy it because their's no question that this model is everything but not an accurate 747-400 diecast airliner. But this time I just pre-ordered the model because of its low quantity and I really thought it would be a great release. However, let's see the the final result when I have Apollo's 747 in my own hands.

Unfortunately the cockpit windows can make or break a model.
The early DW 747's had the same issue - awesome mould - tiny windows. I ended up removing the windows and adding aftermarket decals and presto - problem solved. Still you should not have to do this nowdays!

I checked on ebay/google and the Air France, Qantas and Asiana looked ok? Is this the same model manufacturer?

Yeah - thats true.
The early Magic models (Net models ) were quite poor. I've got the ANZ 744 old colours only because no-one else has done it -
if Witty had the plans to do it - I'd buy one - heck I'd even buy two!

This particular model was part of my holy grail list! The others being AC/LC Varig 744,743.742. You're right, it is quite poor but having said that, I love this model and would never part with her!

I think so. I have the Asiana, KLM, Philippines, and Air Pac Fiji models from Witty. The mould looks quite similar. I'm still on the fence for the "Albatros MDV China Airlines model. I can't tell if it's the same mould or not. I do want to add this to my collection instead of the PHX version.

The ANZ 744 really has been missed off the radar - it was a regular here in SYD for years but really has had no fair representation in 1:400 with the exception of that early Magic/Net Models effort.

oh wow!! the ignore button works!!!!

Several customers of the manufacturer (Whitty) were affected by zinc rot. In the future more may be as well. Earlier the comment was made that the supplier (Whitty) used tainted alloy. That was not deliberate I would think but the end result was a defective product. How would the Whitty customers know? SMAC and AeroClassics, who were both producing some of the finest assortment of models at the time fell victim to this. Yet other hobbies are also included. I had a very nice Bachmann train engine destroy itself some years ago. If there is a blame to be issued then why not blame the people who produced the models? I would think that AC and SMAC would have as much issue with this as you would.

Thanks for posting the photos. I already have all those Apollo 747s models except for 747-400s, I collect mostly Classics series. I wanted to hear what Adrian thinks of black Pan Am we discussed in earlier posts.

yeah ... I just wanted to show that no model is perfect ... every mould is awkward to some respect ...

buy what you like.

My Alaska collection is a combination of funny looking 737s et al that are all miss-matched to some degree ... but I have like 66 or so distinct alaska models ... which is awesome!

I can overlook the minor errors ...

Great selection of pictures to compare.
Your right - each model has its pro's and cons but the interesting to note that as a whole they all look fairly similar to the real thing which means that they all have achieved their target.
The QF looks really nice!

I agree about the QF.. I'm very tempted because this "new" livery is on a RR powered frame not the complete bollocks that was done when GJ shared the PH mould to release the new livery on a 400ER.

If the mould is Big Bird and the art for the tampo is Big Bird then these would be Big Bird reproductions now repackaged under a different name. I had no issues with Big Bird so don't look at this as a negative from me but rather me stating what could be the obvious. I had heard that these now being sold are left over and unsold factory stock as well. The source was reliable. I would be curious if any of your caliper-heads can find any differences between those pictured above an a Big Bird equivalent?
