If you look at the picture again, you will see that the yellow guck is everywhere on the underside of the plane from the front wheels to the tail. I cannot explain why it is concentrated near the only other plastic of the Gemini Jet which would be the wheels.
Also note the yellow beads on the fuselage. This is consitent with material being molten at one time.
Note round grey spots as well. Whatever was there (same shape as the bead) was hot enough to discolor the paint.
I know you want to be right about this "x-ray-machine-gone-awry" theory, but it's just not holding water. The cradles portrayed are broken, not melted. I'm not seeing melted plastic the length of the model, only around the main gear doors as if a sloppy attempt to glue the gear in place was made. I remain totally unconvinced by your argument. Sorry.

From the diagram you can see they are both outside of the visible spectrum. They both are electro-magnetic with microwaves near the bottom end and x ray at the top end. They are both energies and when absorbed will heat up the object absorbing it. The diffence is the wavelength or frequency.
Because of this materials react diffently. X rays have a higher frequency and can therefore go through some material. Microwaves cannot go through the same material. But both will heat up the object absorbing it.
You know enough to almost be dangerous, but not enough to know what you're talking about.
If you really want to work it out, you can do the math to see if what you're saying is even feasible. Or, just look in your luggage after the next time you fly.

Steve,
If you cannot see melted plastic the length of the model from the picture then I can see why you are skeptical.
This time I ask you to read the original post and I quote "In other instance there was a yellow substance/glue all over the model which the seller swears was never there originally.... "

I don't understand. What math do you want me to do ?
What will looking into my luggage the next time I fly do ?
I have seen images of what the scanner at the airport sees .
This was years ago, but the only models I bought straight from the retailer with a yellow blister pack was the GJ National Airlines DC-10-30. Don't know if it was the manufacturer's intent, but they came new in yellow cradles.
Just checked the GJ National 747-100 and it's yellow too.

1. It seems there are questions on the condition of the model when it was received; this all could have been averted if the purchaser had requested photos of the model prior to buying; if the 'private' seller didn't want to provide you with pics = walk away from the sale (that should be a RED flag right away for you); if you want to take his word = then you are rolling the dice. If you had the pics (prior to shipping) of the model from the seller, you would then have some concrete evidence to compare against the 'model' you actually received in the mail from the seller.
2. the USPS postal service did not attempt to glue that model back together! That's not included their job duties/tasks/union contract.
3. that plastic cradle I would say is about 12+ years old; if it's been constantly exposed to the sun or light = this would definitely cause "yellowing" and also become brittle/fragile over time. The USPS xray machines did NOT cause that yellowing/brittleness to the cradle! Also, I have some 1/400 models that came with yellow plastic cradles when they were new.
4. This forum is a great venue for selling/buying/trading models amongst members/collectors, but always remember that doing some due diligence on your part can avoid future headaches.
Steve,
Thank You. A very informative article.
This only re-inforces what I am saying. Note the yellowing of plastic is blamed on UV and heat. That is why computers and most electronic these days have heat sinks and fans to dissipate the heat. Even with all that precaution, over time it still happens.
If you wanted to speed up the yellowing of plastic, all you have to do is to expose it to higher frequency radiation like microwave, x ray will do it faster and Gamma rays will obliterate it altogether.
About "running the gauntlet of my own making". It is a lot easier than it was defending my university thesis. Google makes doing research so much easier and faster.
Also like your pun "Hope it radiates some light for you"....that is priceless

"All over the model" might not be literal, but even if it is, I don't have any answers, and really not much in the way of speculation. However, wayward x-ray machines are far down the list of probable causes. Peter, this is pretty much a moot discussion without the item in question or any real evidence. Probably best to let it go. Thanks for keeping it civil, so many would have started puffing up by now.
