Default How does it end ???

Ok Guys,

Big Question of the day.

I was just curious, when does this come to an end ? I mean, we just do not keep collecting for the rest of our lives, do we ?

Wouldn't Gemini and Dragon in the next 10 years run out of liveries ? OR would we possibly get tired of spending SO much money and move on to something else to spend our cash on ?

Don't get me wrong, I love my planes and will keep them forever and will NEVER get rid of them, but I do not NEED all of them either. And what do you do with 400 or possibly a thousand or more planes ?

I see myself slowing down in the collecting process in the next year or 2. Just because I am getting all that I want. I am sure I will still keep collecting, but I cannot imagine that I would keep at the furver that I have been in the past year.

Have you guys thought about this ?

Or is everyone trying to have the largest, Guiness Book of World Records collection, like Andrew Klein is going for ?

Just a' wonderin.

What you can do it set a max number of planes you will have, and trade your least desired from your current collection for any of the new releases you like better.

The problem I have is where to put all of them. I am almost at the point of moving all my kids into the same room to make space for models.

I have been asking myself the same question....probably will do the same as the airlines....get new crafts in the future and sell the old ones. I also see myself keeping some models as historical reference.

Space Shuttles: American/Space history
747-100 Mount of Everet: The first Jumbo ever
All the planes that I had fly on: Out of being nostalgic
Pan Am: All American Airliner
LanChile: I'm chilean
Impulse: Too nice to see leaving
Alaska: The same as above/i'll fly on one
ASAP I promise!!!

Ok, I'll sell the ones that I have two or more

Regards,

Yuri

I have been removing 1/200, 1/250 Flight Minatures and Wooster's and giving them to a friend! After catching this bug of 1/400th, buying Bader models and others those really in my eyes have small value or non! The detail in this scale is greater then those plastic pipe models.

That's a really good question. In my case I collect only those models that I am dying to have. The PSA's, the Southwests, a handful of other domestics and a few jets I loved as a kid. Not only do I keep money in my pocket, but I also save on space.

I'm a small time collector and I must say that I'm astounded at the amount of models many of you have. There is no way I would want that many models even if I had the money to buy them. My $0.02.

Good question!!

For me, I'm really reducing the number of 1/400 models I buy as I don't have room to display half of the ones I already have, and many of the models I would most like have already been made. I am still buying, but am planning to "spring clean" the collection soon to concentrate on BA, Pan Am, American Airlines and carriers from China, Japan and Korea. I'm also shifting more and more to a smaller collection of larger models from Bader, CDC Armour and Corgi 1/72 in particular with a little Herpa 1/200. However, I am still buying the JX models,

I've started 'retiring' some (DL L-1011's, AA's MD-11's, Hawaiian DC-10's, etc. etc.) from my permanent [airport] display... The BA 'tails' don't appear much lately, either...
Since re-starting my collection, I've been neglecting 'other' hobbies... A resolution for this year is to change that; try to enjoy as much as possible (even if all we've got is a 24 hr. day!)...

It ends for me when they stop making 1:400 models. One of this years projects is to hire a carpenter friend of mine to build a custom display case for all my models in a room adjacent to my den. I have some real cool memorabilia from Pan Am, Air Cal, National Airlines, and Some really cool stuff from the 1930's and 40's. So we are going to kind of make the room look like the museum thing. I figure we will have enough room for over 1,000 1:400 models as well as some really nice 1:200 models as well.

It ends for me when I have all of the models I want. I am primarily a retro collector, and even though I like most retros, I don't have the compulsion to have every one. I have a fairly large collection, although some of you could probably dwarf it easily.

I have a while to go before I slow down and gradually stop buying models. I would guess that within the next 3 years, I'll probably have close to everything I want and at that point I'll stop.

There are lots of young collectors out there who will probably want to have models of planes from their youth, and it is these people who, when they get older, will most likely make up the bulk of the diecast aircraft collector market 10-15 years from now.

I am in the same boat as most of you. Its kinda funny because I was thinking about this the other day. When I decide to purchase a model I have a some criteria that motivates me to buy it. Usually its 1) I have flown on this airline and type 2) I just love the livery and particular model! Of course I have missed some and hope that they will be re released in maybe a different reg # or something.
I just will not buy a model that I dont really like. So, this cuts down on the clutter. Im not gonna buy a ..... WestJet 737, it has no significance to me and the mould sucks.

I like all of the models that I have purchased so far. As is my collection is not nearly as large as some of yours, and I havent event started to display them since I have not bought a display case. If my wife knew how much I have spent so far , and intend to spend she would slay me!! But, this is something I enjoy and will continue to do until I have no room. Maybe I will just build another room just for my models!

The answer for me is simple...
It NEVER ends.
Hobbies are a "trip" not a "destination".
In my personal case, my different hobbies "rotate" in intensity.
Could be "high intensity" for 4-5 years and then it goes to the back burner for a while, only tocome back strong God knows when.
The last two years Airplane Models have been on high, but at other times in my life it has been painting miniatures, making plastic models(AFV mainly), collecting baseball cards, toy soldiers, HO trains, coaching football, photography, militaria collecting...it goes on and on.
Several of the hobbies achieve a "cruise control" status but not the high intensity mode, while others go dormant and resurface.
One that I got completely turned off on was baseball cards after the MLB strike of the mid 90's. The different card companies proliferated to the point that instead of 3 or 4 sets a year EACH company had 3-4 sets at ever increasing prices... they lost me and I had collected almost constantly from 1963!
The same will happen with plane models and airplane photography and all thing aviation... but it never ends...

Good topic. I was actually thinking about posting this after I got the answers to the How many did you buy thread 'cuz I've really been thinking about this as well.

I'd really like to say that I don't have a problem going on and on and on with collecting these babies but right now I do have to question myself whether this is money wisely spent as well. I'm not into collecting these for the money but once you've spent close to US$12,000 for these things and you've got a family, you're bound to start thinking whether you've invested wisely or just spending foolishly.

For 2002, I'll probably continue with what I've done and that is to collect each and every Gemini that comes out and collect what I like from the others. But for sure, I'll be thinking about cutting back.

For me, there have been so many toy airplanes manufactured since the Wright brothers' time that I could collect them for many lifetimes.

For me, 1:400 models of today are not the entire collection, but rather the pinnacle of evolution of diecast metal airliner toy/models that started just after WWI in France with a small "pot metal" caricature of a Farman Goliath F-60 biplane liner, through Dinky Toy and Tootsietoy, Frankonia, Aero Mini, Lintoy, Schabak and finally Gemini Jets.

I also like the Japanese toy planes of the 50s and I have many more to look for at shows and flea markets.

I know, I can't take them with me (maybe they can bury them with me like in ancient Egypt? ) and I must continue to be prudent with my money.

Only if the carriers stop painting aircraft will it end. Why would it?
I hope it doesn't!!

And still other "average joes" will go to the slots or blackjack tables and blow just as much in a fraction of the time. If they enjoy themselves, fine. But, at least we have something to show for our investment.

the first goal that i have in this hobby was to collect every airframe there is.... 747..100,200,300,400 etc.... and i only buy those which i really like and are colorful. that way, my collection wont look boring and wont look like all of them are just the same airplane. my collection is only 28 airplanes, and i just love the variety of the models that is in my collection, i think i should just continue with my moderation and everything would go well with me

Well... pretty much my entire collection, with a few exceptions, will constitute a good chunk of my new shop's opening inventory. Man, the walls around here are gonna be pretty naked but I've enjoyed some of this stuff for over 30 years and it's probably time to let others enjoy it as well. Think I may concentrate on simply collecting 1/400 and 1/500 diecast of the planes and liveries I've flown on over the years.

Good point Brian. I just hope that its a good investment that will still be worth it later on when my kids inherit this collection.

Hey kwip, where in Colorado Springs are ya located? My uncle lives in Pueblo so about 1 hour south of you and I visit them around once a year.

As T-MAn says "It ends for me when they stop making 1:400 models.".

If space becomes an issue, I'll keep some in their boxes and will rotate them on the shelves periodically.

Now, let's suppose that all the passed and present models are available on the market, nothing prevent us to run our imagination and ask for fantasy liveries to be made...

An example? Concorde Braniff in jellybeans colors

Now, the limits become the ones of our imagination. I truly believe the market will end up there one day.

An other example? DW55333 China Airlines Airbus A340-300 with a fantasy livery for China Airlines Travel Department

Personally I may have to slow down my collecting some as my storage area is almost full and I'm not contemplating getting a bigger storage area just yet. I will however need to look for a house with additional square footage and hopefully that will tide me over for a spell.
