Default What are the best 1:400 brands?

Hi everyone, this topic has probably been discussed before but i'm just too lazy to search for it. I'm not new to the 1:400 scale aircrafts but only have a small collection and have stopped collecting them for quite some time. Your help would be appreciated to keep me up to date about the best 1:400 scale brands out there for commercial airliners and/or military cargo/airlift and the major websites (those with the largest variety) in the United States which sells them. Thanks in advance and I hope that this thread will be useful to new collectors as well.

Hi

For A330/ 340s, and 777s Phoenix is the best. For 737s, 767s, 757s, Geminijets are the best, while the best 747 is still a hot topic for debate. I like Dragon Wings'747s, but there are others out there. Hope that helps?

A320 series AC is considered the best in the market, Herpa and Hogan are not far behind.

Depends on the model. It's not safe to say that one brand is always better than the other.

From my point of view, Phoenix has one of the best A333/A343/A345/A346, the best 777s, 787s and A380s, but their 744s suck.

So to the guy above that says don't buy Herpa or Hogan ... Herpa also has a terrific A343/A345/A346 mould - some would even argue that they're the best on the market, and I can't disagree. Hogan also makes terrific 777s.

It really depends on the type of aircraft you're after.

Yes I totally agree with CXB77L's statement! However AC's 330/340 is also very good!

Dragon still has the best 744 and MD-11 moulds.

As the others have mentioned, it all depends on which A/C types you're interested in etc...My personal opinion, I'd have to say that DW have the best 747-4, 767-4, MD-11 and Military moulds. And Gemini Jets with 727, 767-2/3 and Phoenix with 777, A330's and 787's etc....Hopefully that would help in your search of the best moulds in the 1:400 scale

I think BigBird 747s are absolutely fantastic, especially ones with a short upper deck.

Their 743s and 744s are also very good, and I would prefer them over Dragon Wings despite the fact that DW has the better (correct) winglet shape and size, better vertical tailfin, and that DW are the only ones to have proper PW engines. BigBird redeems itself by having better landing gears, and a more accurate dihedral angle (too much dihedral on the DW 744s).

With regards to the best 1/400 Brands, the nature of collecting and this hobby make it highly subjective. ultimately, researching and understanding the variation in quality and detail are subjected to personal preference.
In a nutshell, what I May love in my collection may not appeal to many other collectors- it simply comes down to choice, what you may like or dislike.
Research, compare or even set a criteria for buying models, (as its very easy to become carried away with this hobby)
I find the DAC database a very useful asset as a collector for making these decisions as well as educating one's self about the models that are out there.

Aeroclassics is my personal favorite, I really like their DC-9/30 mould. If you're just getting into the hobby, don't get sucked up into the world of modern eurowhite A330s. You could start with the Northeast DC-9!

....and not to forget all the superb exclusive retro propliner moulds that Aeroclassics has - no competition if you love airline history

The AC A319/A320/A321/A330/A340 are second to none, and you can't get more modern than that.

I know, and my point wasn't to avoid Aeroclassics, but it was directed at a previous suggestion 'not to get sucked into collecting eurowhite A330s'

It is because Aeroclassics have branched out and created some modern jets that I became an Aeroclassics customer. I do have an Aeroclassics CX 707 in my collection, and I do intend on picking up one of every type CX has ever operated (including DC-3s, DC-6s, CV880s etc), but other than that, 'classics' will not form a significant part of my collection.

Me too. I didn't own a single AC until 'the busses' were introduced. Now I get every release that meets my criteria of collecting european moderns. Thank you AK

For contemporary airliners I have always been a big fan of Phoenix - excellent printing and more recently improved moulds - fantastic - Phoenix are getting better and better.
AeroClassics is the best manufacturer for classic jets and prop liners - almost always breathtaking quality. Personally I have one exception: I like Gemini's Britannia better - the fuselage is "beefier". AC's A320 mould looks great but compared to the moulds from Gemini and Phoenix again the fuselage appears to be a little bit thinner.
Herpa has some fantastic moulds in 1:400 scale e.g. their A340-500/600 mould is the best on the market. I also like their 1:400 A318, Boeing 747 SP and Concorde. However, Herpa's activity on the 1:400 stage is very low. I still hope that Herpa will release a Tu-114 in 1:400. Herpa's A320 is good but unfortunately a "tail-sitter".
Finally JC in my view is a manufacturer with very unpredictable quality. In my opinion they have release a few good and many not so good models. I have just bought their LH MD-11 F and I regret it.

For the bext in 1:400
Aeroclassics/Bigbird got the best 747
Phoenix got the best 777..767.737-800.A380..A340-500 and A340-600 also good
Aeroclassics have the best A320 series A330 and A340, DC-10 and A300
Inflight 400 seems got the best 744 mould nowadays and its 738 also quite good
Geminjets its MD-11 and A310 is a unique mould in market now.

Im sure all the people above me have already said this but o well, It def depends on the aircraft. Phx and GJ have amazing molds. DW kinda, Iv herd things about JC wings i know nothing about there 1:200, but i collect the 1:400 and all mine are very nice, But i would put PHX GJ JC in my top three 1:400 models, but thats just my two cents.
