Default NEWBIE here wanting to learn!!! Please help!!

Hello!

I wasn't sure where to post this. I would like to get into this hobby because I find it fascinating!!! My only issue is that I don't know squat about planes or this hobby. Is there a book/website that I can read on how all this works? I mean I'm getting a little bit here and there but I would like to know the real info!

How and where can I educate myself?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Hey Charlie, you may want to figure out a few things:

1. Which types of 1/400 birds/aircraft you want to collect? Airbus, Boeing, 707s, 727s, 737s, 777s, A300s, A340s, A380, tc..

2. Any particular airlines that you like? Qantas, AA, British Airways, KLM, etc.

3. Do you prefer all metal (Gemini, Phoenix, Aeroclassics, etc) diecast or you don't mind metal fuselage and plastic wings (Dragon)

4. I would visit your local hobby aviation store that sell diecast models; to get a hands on look/feel of the models up close; can't do this online.

5. send out any questions on the board; there are DAC members who will provide you some insight and answer any inquiries you may have.

Hope the above helps?

Cheers! T7

Go to a collectibles show when one is near you. Thats a great way to see models and meet people. The closest shows to you are in ATL and MIA.

Hi CPlanes777,

Welcome to DAC. As the name of this forum implies, the models are diecast aircraft. Diecasting is the manufacturing process by which liquid metals are formed into a particular mold. The outcome of this process allows for accurate dimensions and a good surface to the object cast. Keep in mind that the fuselage, wings and other parts are generally cast in their own molds. This includes casting plastic parts such as wings and tail assemblies that some manufactures desire for their product.

The terms "mold" and "mould" have the same meaning. If I am talking to someone in the U.S., I use mold. If it is someone in the U.K., Australia or a former country of the British empire, I use mould.

As for educational newsletters or books, there are none available. DAC is a great resource for learning about different manufacturers, retailers, etc. And it is from the members of this forum that you can learn all about about mold accuracies, color scheme detailing and the like. Click the database at the top to find airliners, airlines, manfactures, etc. that interest you. And as others have said, diecast shows are a great experience as well as visiting retailers in your state. I attached the Gemini Jets retailer link for the U.S. Visiting these retailers online will help you gain some knowledge about manufactures and the products they offer. Enjoy the flight.

Hi CPlanes777, shadaken and fazeman have very good advice and you will learn/soak in this hobby by attending some airliner shows along with DAC member postings on this forum. By the way, I like your username = ....777; keep a lookout in the next few days. I will be posting a huge selection of 1/400 models (Aeroclassics, Gemini, Phoenix, Dragon, Tucanoline, etc..) for sale and every model has never been displayed, 'new condition' in the original boxes! Cheers! T7

Welcome aboard! so many great releases in the 1/400 world and its an exciting hobby for the truly fascinated aviation enthusiast. You come in at a good time with the recent arrivals of the 747-8 from Phoenix (I wish I still collected in 1/400). BTW, you oughta check out the 1/200 models! I think the great manufacturers bring a constantly improving product because of forums like DAC, but a few things to be mindful of:
1. This hobby will become addictive and too many models can quickly become a must have
2. Do you have enough space?
3. Beware the sharks in this forum who will not waste a second to flame a fellow forum member for even innocent discrepancies!

If i could make any recommendations, Phoenix 777's and A380's are some of the greatest offerings in the 1/400 scale....

You Can Get Tons Of Books And A Little Help From Aviaion World, But The Library Is Prolly The Best Source For Newbs. Try Reading "Aircraft Recognotion" Literature.
There's A Series In Pocet Size And You Have The Jumbo Volumes From Jane's, But Sometimes Jane's Is Innaccurate.
There's Tons Of Sources, But You Gotta Do Your Own Research, Otherwise You Risk Being Dac'ed

Obviously www.airliners.net is a major source of airliner info too. On the model front I'd get a plane book and then check through the model database to see what's available.

I'd also choose a theme for your collecting and before just going for what's new I'd strongly suggest checking out the history of the industry and older classic planes and airlines. It's a lot more interesting than the modern industry in my opinion.

My advice, checkout Airliners.net, jump on youtube and look up plane spotting videos, keep an eye on this website, but most importantly, take some time to go out to your local major airport! Most have viewing areas, or try and find some ones yourself, even better, take a camera with you and get some pictures/videos
Nothing stirs a passion in this hobby more IMO than watching and listening to a 777-747-A380 etc throttle up to take off power, then go soaring into the sky, certainly what got me addicted!

You may also want to view some unboxing/review videos on YouTube. I have a youtube channel where I unbox models and do reviews on the models. Please feel free to visit and take a look at:
