Default New Detolf Display Case

Finally picked up (two) Detolf cases today from IKEA (one of them had a glass pane completely shattered, hence only photos from one.)

For any on the fence about these cases - I highly suggest them; although many have custom altered theirs to include lighting and more shelves. Any suggestions let me know! LED lighting was custom added.

...Im beginning to think that two of these bad boys with the standard three glass shelves isn't enough, as I dont plan on putting anything on a stand; as they're are quite a few models that didn't make an apperance in these shots...

Lighting only from the LED's.....

(the light on the top shelf models is not that drastic in illumination from the ones on the bottom)

How is the assembly? Easy? Does the case feel steady or wobbly? Thanks.

Looks good! What kind of LEDs do you have installed at the top? Are they also from Ikea? I am looking at putting up a couple Ikea shelves and I don't know what kind of LEDs I can use?

- Case is perfectly stable in my opinion...and the assembly is quite easy. I did it myself last night and it wasn't too much trouble. However, given the weight of the glass panes, it might be beneficial to have a second person there to support and help with initial alignment.

I have the Dioder LED's from IKEA. They are the strip of white LED's (you can also get a strip that changes seven different colors). Each pack comes with four strips that contain 9 white LED's. The heat distribution is so minimal the lights are cool to the touch (even after an hour), so placing models underneath are not a problem. You can also connect each strip together if you want. I would def. recommend you pick these up if you're planning on using LED's.

Any other questions please let me know...

The cases go together very easily with one person doing the work. They are very tall with a small footprint, so if you have deep pile carpet they can be unstable with a high CG. Ikea gives you a wall anchor strap for the top to keep them from tumbling and I have seen guys place them on risers as well.

The most time-consuming aspect of assembly is cleaning the panes of glass before putting it together (both of mine had a film that needed to be cleaned).

Great display! You might want to try clear Lucite risers. They can add different levels to each shelf thereby making for a less crowded look.

You have my attention....do tell more. Where can I get these "Lucite Risers." I've never heard of them before.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

You can check online for Retail Displays. Also, some Antique stores carry them. Only a few dollars apiece and they come in all sizes.

Though the directions advise there be TWO people to put a Detof together, one person can do it alone?

It's a "two-crew" Part 121 operation!

I have put together six with no problems, I use the round Ikea "Non" lights that come two to a pack. They work nice,

The only advantage I could see with using a second person is that you'll finish assembly in half the time. Other than that, it is quite doable to complete the assembly by yourself.

I use these as well. I have one strip for every four sections that I have divided of the IKEA Besta/Inreda display unit I use. The lighting is sufficient, but I have all glass shelves instead of the regular wooden shelves that come with the unit. Westjetter you should go for the Besta/Inread over the Detolf as you get to store more planes, though it is not a full glass display like the Detolf.

You can see the strips on the top edge

As others have indicated Todd, yes, one person can assemble one of these Detolf units. I assembled two all by my lil' lonesome. lol.

Just an FYI, though, they're not totally dust-proof/dust-free.

By adding 4 more shelves to these you can double your display space. Pity Ikea did not have the foresight to do this, as us collectors would be queing up at the door to buy them all!

I love my glass display cabinet (commercial shop display version) as it is more dust-proof and more space than this Detolf Display. Just hate the big gap on this Detolf. Wishing one day I 'll have a tailor made glass display in my house to show off all my collections.....
