Default Why the premium on Inflight models?

Looking at new releases I see that an upcoming Inflight B707 will go for around $99. The same B707 from Aviation 200 (different livery) is $69. An upcoming L1011 from Inflight is going for $135 whereas the Gemini L1011 is around $75.

If I am to believe the people in the know here, they are all made in the same factories in China, and some even share molds. What justifies these premiums of 43% to 80% over comparable products? That 707 has surely by now covered its development costs?

I think at least some of the premium has to do with (barring some exceptions) better QC (i.e. no loose parts, better tampo placement, etc...).

Inflights are not perfect, but they seem to be a lot less plagued with the defects seen in other 200 scale manufacturers.

The paint quality seems a little better with Inflight, though some L1011s and others have experienced paint cracking.

Are some moulds shared?, yes, but it is what is placed on them, and how it is placed that seems to account for some of the higher cost.

More middlemen involved. Also Inflight200 has prices controls to "protect their product", so retailers can't "list" models for less then full MSRP. IMO, distibutors need to be worried about being distributors instead of worrying about the retail side also.

With respect to the B707 I have seen no difference in quality.
It makes sense that with more middlemen everyone has to take their cut. Though the price controls smack of restraint of trade...

I have not been a collector long - maybe two years, but I have never had an Inflight model arrive with anything loose, broken, or scratched - and that includes models bought second hand. I have had numerous GJ arrive with pieces broken, separated or scraped. I am also pleasantly surprised by Aviation 400 quality. JC Wings, less so. The one thing I will say about Gemini Jets - they have the BEST boxes.
