Default Did anyone say "L-1011 Paint Cracks Eliminated"???

Well folks,

I received my Inflight200 Hawaiian Air L-1011s N765BE and EI-BTN a few days ago (see my post dated last week). Although some days went by, I am still pi**ed off since I discovered that N765BE has that typical L-1011 paint crack in the rear fuselage again.

We all do remember Inflight's announcement concerning the paint cracks in the L-1011's rear fuselage, following the huge number of damaged Eastern and LTU L-1011s when, in July 2009, one of Inflight's co-owners stated that they "looked at both the tooling and the way the models are made so that the QC will improve" and, after having done that, they were sure now they "have got the answers for this after some long hours".

Obviously, the hours invested did not have much of an effect - or the hours have not been long enough. The changes made to the tooling and/or manufacturing process did not eliminate the problem. I am still asked to pay some $150 for a product that features a well-known production problem that was announced as "investigated and eliminated". Don't get me wrong, I don't want to accuse or sue Inflight... but the fun of this hobby is going to disappear. I just want a premium quality model for the premium retail price I paid. I am not requesting anything supernatural or superhuman... just what I paid for: a flawless product.

Although the Hawaiian Air L-1011s are a bright and shiny release, I must say that - apart from the wrong nose gear doors with fleet no. 767 on N765BE as well as the recurring paint crack problem - the general decline in quality and accuracy of Inflight's L-1011 models is disappointing and increasingly making me refrain from considering their products for my collection. Just a few examples from the Hawaiian Air L-1011s:

1. Paint crack in the rear fuselage
2. Nose gear door with wrong fleet number printed on
3. Crookedly glued nose gear strut (leaning backwards)
4. Rolls-Royce engine logo applied in different positions on each and every engine and model (most of the time too low)
5. Dull and rough areas on the glossy white fuselage (anyone touching these models with glue on fingers maybe?)
6. Remaining burrs on main landing gear doors (another common - albeit minor - quality issue on their L-1011 releases)
7. Misplaced printing for the horizontal stabilizer's panel

I have attached a photo illustrating some of these quality issues. For now, I am fed up with their inaccuracies. I have reported these findings to Inflight but I do not expect too much of a response. Of course, I will return these faulty models and of course my retailer will try his best to deliver better examples. But... is this the natural meaning of how the hobby works?!?

I got a messsagee from the seller of my Surinam DC8 saying it has paint cracks, so it's being sent back to Inflight for a repalcement.

I just hope this is not a trend emerging with IF200 models, that would just be catastrphic!

Unfortunately, I had the same issue with the paint cracking on the supposed 2nd release Eastern L-1011's. I finally received a good bi-centenial, but was unable to get a crack free regular version. The cracking on both of my Easterns was horizontal on the fueslage from the back of the wing to the horizontal stab on one side. I know I mentioned this before, but in talking with DK of Jetstreams at the January LA airliners show, according to him there was no retooling of the L-1011 mould to fix the cracking paint problem. He claims it is packaging/rough handling during shipment that is causing the cracking paint. Again he told me no retooling occurred when I specifically asked if the mould was retooled. Whatever the cause, to spend that much and have issues is very disappointing. That is why I hate to order planes because you never know how they will arrive and as my luck turns out it is usually my holy grails that end up being the ones that are screwed up....Frustrating! I have had the same problem with a coupel IF 8's and one or two IF 747's. In all cases, with the exception of the Eastern I have been able to get good replacements, but it does take the fun out of the hobby. Good luck on your replacements!

That's unfortunate but interesting to hear. To date, I have never heard or read about horizontal paint cracks on Inflight's L-1011 models. The typical problem on their L-1011s is a circular paint crack in the rear fuselage, running from the one side of cabin windows around the belly to the other side of cabin windows. One of Inflight's co-owners stated the fact that the L-1011's fuselage was made of two separate parts caused the problem (as a conclusion, I assume the paint crack runs along the seam between the upper and the lower parts of the fuselage). We had horizontal crack lines on Inflight's DC-10 and B747, though.

Concerning the re-tooling/changes in the manufacturing process: I don't know "DK" of Jetstream and his source of information but I do remember we already discussed this in another thread a few weeks back. All I can quote is an official statement made by Bob Cass, a co-owner of Inflight, in which he stated that, after they had analized both, the tooling and the manufacturing process, they were sure to have found a sufficient solution in order to prevent the occurence of the paint cracks in the L-1011's rear fuselage. He did not reveal any details but saying they were in some way re-working the tooling and/or making changes to the manufacturing process. I don't know whether they found out at which point of production or shipping the problem occured or if they made any 'stress tests'.

In any way, we have to confirm now: Paint crack problem on Inflight's L-1011 was not solved.

Sorry to see this Madridista. The only problem mine has is the misaligned printing for the horizontal stabilizer...but I wouldn't have noticed it had you not mentioned it. Well, that and a couple of the antenna arrived separated from the model...though I did find them in the box (whew!).

The same water tank tests used for the DeHavilland Comet were recently used to test Inflight's models. The results are in...

Just for update...

I got a response from Inflight, however, the contents was similar to the other two or three statements I got when I did report any kind of severe quality problems to them during the past two years. Therefore, I really don't know if there's any effect.

(...) Very many thanks for the email which you have sent to me which I have read with interest. This could not have come at a better time to be honest as I have a meeting this week with the factory about production.

As of today I have called a stop to ALL L1011 models until this is investigated FULLY. (...)

Actually, they have always been "very thankful" and, accidently, had "board meetings" the week I wrote them. Problems weren't solved anyway, though...
