Do you remember when United Airlines:
Played the famous Rhapsody In Blue in their safety videos?
gave out meals in their signature blue boxes?
going out to ORD to ride on their planes to Las Vegas and Hawaii???? I do.

I remember when I rode on this when I was a kid to Las Vegas when they used to fly this there. The seats, food service(was not that bad but good), and the nice sounds I heard when riding on the 3 hour flight either way. Here is a commercial when they first came out with it.

Here are the pics. The first one is with timetables from 1997 for both ORD and LAS, a box they used to put their food in, and some wings.

The next one is a side shot.

The nose and tail

And what it was replaced with and is flying now, after Ted is gone: the A320.

What a beautiful aircraft and model. Thank you for sharing. I wanted this one, but it was a toss between this and the Eastern L-1011. Given I collect Eastern, had to go with that one.

I know you're excited!!

I understand your happiness but... I can't help, folks. The cockpit windshield simply does not look like the real DC-10 and, thus, the aircraft's real face and identity is not adequately represented here. And since we are talking about an $$$ product branded Inflight, I cannot say 'Thanks, Inflight, and well done!'.

If it makes you feel any better, nobody in my opinion makes a perfect DC-10. I think if you have the money, the Inflight mould is the best.

Did they paint the belly fairing, or is it just all silver down there?

Thumbs up Re: Photos:Inflight 200 United Dc-10 Saul Bass

No complaints here, no model is 100 pct perfect, and this dc-10-30 is a far cry better than our alternatives back 10-15 years ago with the inflight LE models. You want to see a bad DC-10-30 model the LE's were horrible. I absolutey love my fleet of 4 United DC-10-30 models. Its the best DC-10-30 diecast representation that I have seen in my entire lifetime. Nothing comes close to this, not even model kit renderings. I saw these every day both in Honolulu and Maui, it was standard fair to the Islands of Paradise, cant say the same for Eastern L-1011, this is my eastern L-1011 to Hawaii. United, now just need a Continental black meatball too.

Mine should come today. I remember flying DTW to LAS via ORD on United in the mid-90's and the whole route was on DC-10's, now the DTW - ORD service is mostly CRJ's and A319/320's.

Agree, the canopy windows are a bit too high but better than the Singapore version.
I looked at my AlItalia (1st release) and the canopy placement is more accurate than on this one....

Glad this model strikes a happy chord in your flying memories. That is exactly why I enjoy collecting. Good Times. Real 1 to 1 time aboard.

Thanks for sharing your enjoyable flight and artifacts on the UAL -10. Yes, model accuracy part is important, but as mentioned, no model is perfect, and the actual flying experience sometimes outweighs the less than perfect diecast paintjob. Really bad moulds, and wings falling off, are a whole other story.

I appreciate your passion but I find it absolutely incredible that you enjoyed United out of ORD. With a passion, I hated UA and avoided it as much as possible. I flew out of ORD for business hundreds of times between 1978 and 1996 - when I lived close enough that ORD (and not MDW) was my home airport. Maybe I enjoyed one UA flight once - a 767 to Anchorage. But other than that once, it was always something with UA at ORD.

It was frequently lost luggage on inbound flights to ORD. This meant filing a claim, missing a bus home so having to wait for another and waiting two days or so for UA to eventually deliver. It was frequently late flights. It was even UA personnel slowing down flights when pilots were mad about something or other and they would taxi slower than I can ride a bicycle.

Thankfully there was an AA hub at ORD and that airline was consistently better. When possible, I was able to fly Air Cal from the LA area and I always liked the service back then on CO or EA. UA was consistently bad but I had to use it so very often because it was simply the only choice given the time or price factors.

Even had an emergency landing at ORD in a 727-200 on an ORD-STL flight (got to STL eventually), but I do thank the UA crew for handling that professionally and their concern with safety.

Done with UA now. Home airport is DEN but it is easy enough to avoid United when I have to fly.

The DC-10 pictured is a very nice model but I won't buy one because of the chip on my shoulder for UA.

As a frequent flyer on UA, I did not share the problems you did in and out of ORD through the 90s. However, I will agree that in the last 1-2 years, service levels have fallen to the point that I now actively seek other airlines whenever possible in and out of Chicago. The unbelievable problems with trying to speak to a person in the U.S. drive me crazy. It's bad enough when they pick up the phone and say their name is Tom or Jane (and they're speaking with an Indian accent), but then they can't give you any answers. If they do give you an answer, it's frequently wrong. I recently was trying to get a refund from them and was told to go to ORD and speak to an agent. Like a fool, I listened and took the 40 minutes and parking fees to try and resolve the problem. When I got to O'Hare, they said I never should have been told to go there. Worse yet, there was no manager available AND their computer system would not even allow them to check into my claim. No one cared that I had just spent time and money to try and resolve a problem - they just gave me a phone number to call. Guess what - it went to India - and no one had a clue! They have my $398 and I can't get it back (even though I'm entitled to it according to their own rules).

The flights themselves have fallen in service quality. As an airline nut - like everyone else here - I enjoy hearing from the cockpit at least a few times during the longer flights. Ha! You're lucky if they spend 20 seconds total on the intercom. "From the cockpit" is now becoming spotty as well - about 1/2 the flights I take on UA don't bother to open up channel 9. If you ask a flight attendant to request it be turned on, they give you a dirty look. The aircraft themselves are a mess, with all kinds of issues with broken seats, poor cleaning, and lavatories that look like a bunch of kids have been using them.

Bottom line - UA has forgotten they are a service business. They still can't make any money at current airfares either, so I expect their service levels will continue to fall (which in turn will lead to passengers looking elsewhere)...

UA - I still have lots of your diecast in my collection, but you're losing me as a loyal flyer with repeated problems and no one knowing how to fix them (or even caring). AA, SW (ouch), and Jet Blue get most of my business whenever possible.

Just got my UAL DC-10 and overall, I like it, but mine has a paint issue and the dealer I bought it from is now out of them. The paint is cracked and looks to be trying to separate from the fuselage just above the right wing. Anyone have an idea on how to seal this issue, maybe a Testors clear coat?

This sounds exactly like the paint cracks several collectors had on the Northwest/KLM DC-10 over a year ago. There should be a thread in this forum... searching...

Agree with everything except your comments about the Inflight LE models. The Inflight 200 DC-10 is definitely better, but the LE models were far from horrible. The Inflight 200 Pan Am DC-10, with the misplaced cheat line and windows - that was horrible.

Yes, a Continental DC-10 with black meatball would be most welcome.

CcrlR737pilot,

Thanks for sharing your United experience and photos. Was the DC-10 you flew still in Saul Bass colors? I'll be receiving my DC-10 tommorow or Monday. Can't wait.

I got a chance to ride on both saul bass and Battleship gray. I rode on them more than once so there were different times when I rode on saul bass but I did.

Well... Inflight pretended to improve tooling for the L-1011 due to the high number of paint cracks in the rear fuselage. We'll see if their improved tooling can prevent those cracks.

Now it seems that the DC-10 is the next 'building site' they should take care of. I always have to keep in mind we are talking about a $$$ product here. Unbelievable.

Overall, I'm happy with IF's L1011s; nothing to report on the three I have.

As for the United Saul Bass, it is my first DC-10 and it's one iconic bird I particularly wanted. I realize the problems associated with their DC-10 such as your assessment of the cockpit windows; that I can handle. But, when it comes to hairline cracks, they will only get worse. And as you said, we are talking about $$$. Money and common sense always trumps emotion.

Hopefully, the retailers who receive these returns have enough scruples not to put them back on the market. Afterall, the retailer is part of the collector's link and it's up to them to send the manufacturer a loud and clear message.

As far as I know, that worked VERY WELL with recent L-1011 releases. The paint cracks on the L-1011 became a quite 'common' sight' (what a pity that I need to say this), the first ones reported were the yellow Court Line models, then the paint crack appeared on the Air Canada, Gulf Air, TWA, Lockheed Prototype, LTU and the Eastern releases. Knowing about the growing anger among collectors, Inflight recently told the retailers to check their batch of the Eastern and the LTU release and asked them to return any damaged examples. They announced a second production run in order to replace the damaged examples and said they would use an improved tooling for any future release. I hope we are finally heading for a brighter future as far as upcoming L-1011s are concerned.

Anyway, I did not notice too many DC-10 releases being affected by those paint cracks along the fuselage right above the wing. I read about this problem almost a year and a half back when the DC-10 in combined KLM/Northwest livery reached the collectors. Any collectors having other DC-10 release received with that paint crack?

After returning the first model due to hairline paint cracks, I received the second one in mint condition from another retailer. I really worked the Inflight retailer list and found it at PilotWear & Aviation Supermart. Your online store for Aviation Gifts and Collectibles, Pilot Supplies, Airplane T-shirts, Aircraft Logo Caps, Clocks, Watches, and more.. Interestingly, there are a number of aviation collectable sites associated with Pilotwear & Diecast Airplane.
