Default Herpa 440 Convair Metropolitans

The folks at Herpa must have an affection for Convair 440s and it's rubbing off on me. I like it because they are releasing this model with prop era, jet era and current liveries in mind; something to wet everyone's whistle. Well, I'd like to add a fouth category; executive aircraft.

One executive example I like is the Norfolk and Western Railroad Convair. Piedmont Airlines' General Aviation Division converted this aircraft for N&W probably between the '50s and '60s; something I will further research. It shouldn't be that hard because Norfolk Southern is based in Norfolk, Va.

This is a rare picture of Norfolk and Western Railroad's Convair. Hey, that "railroad red" cheatline matches their boxcars.

I'd love to see a Mohawk Airlines C-440!

Those convairliners were all over Europe too. Quite a few "big" schemes could be still done: KLM, SAS, LOT, YUGOSLAV JAT, Iberia, Alitalia.

I did recommend to them to make the Mohawk livery in this model. They claimed they would consider it. I only wish I had a chance to fly in one of them before they were retired. I did get to fly in a Capital Viscount and the AA DC-6B as a kid, so I guess I can't complain. There were not too many options flying in and out of Rochester NY back then...

Mohawk is one of many airlines I'd like to purchase from Herpa. With regard to pop culture, there was a song by Chicago called "Flight 602." When they performed this song at Carnegie Hall in 1971, Robert Lamm announced that the song title referred to a Mohawk flight from New York to Toronto. I wonder if that flight number was designated for the Convair.

Herpa has eight releases in the books and I'm sure there's plenty more waiting in the wings.

Sounds like you'll have to fork out for Herpa or Western custom model. Tough on the pocket but well worth it in the pleasure dept. Well I guess that depends on your requirements and priorities of course.

They never did. The Martin 404 was PI's aircraft of choice to replace their DC-3 fleet.
