Thumbs down IF200 DC-10 NW/KLM - The horror is back !!!

After my bad experiences with the IF200 B747-100 PAN AM (see more here http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...7-pan-ams.html ) the horror is my the IF200 DC-10 NW/KLM back again

Take a look at the added pics and see how the paint is cracking on both sides

What a kind of bad quality for a models with this price !

OK, I'll get replacement form my excellent dealer but my general worries are...

If this happens to new IF200 models (for me iit is now for the third time) I won't think about how my IF200's will look in a few years

They may not have been yellowed but... having an expensive model with a cracked painting all over isn't also a good perspective

That is just bad! I feel very sorry for you that you got the model in this condition.
I have 9 IFs myself, but none of them have any serious problems such as cracking paint.

This model is in my priority group of future shopping, now I'm worried.
How come you get all the cracked ones continuously? Darn it...

Hope when you get a replacement, everything should be ok.

That is one of the worst case I have seen on a brand new model, I have 50+ Inflight and so far(touch wood) have not had a problem like this, but I have had 2 bad 747 landing gear on the front. Maybe the QC workers were asleep or something!!

With those huge quality problems on high prices models you can go crazy.
What is the QC manager doing ??? Sleeping. Fire him !!!
It's a shame for IF200 !!!

I was hoping only the IF 747-100 has this sort of paint-cracking - but your DC-10 shows that was only wishful thinking.

I WILL NOT BUY ANY INFLIGHT-MODELS UNTIL THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED!

This is horrible, just like my B747 PanAm Billboard. And I had been eyeing this one for last 8 months. Will have to reconsider if this is what they are throwing at us. Feel sorry for your pain.

Last month I had a B747 British Airways (Union Jack) that had a paint crack problem on the tail cone underside.
I did not see it right away but after I got it home, before placing it on shelf...
I had it returned...and did not consider buying another one...
Issues like this are very upsetting...
Looks like IF200 are getting sloppy...

I only have one IF200 model (PAA 741) and thats in pristine condition. However I don't know what it will look like a few years from now. I hope this problem is rectified because there are some future IF200 releases that I'll move heaven and earth to get hold of.

I've only seen one IF and it is the PAA 741 and it looked awesome...but these stories of the paint peeling are far worse than the yellowing...what could you possible do to stop this? Not that I have any

I took a carefull look at my BA DC10 and that also has minor cracks on one side with slightly visible white line!! I am dropping plans of buying anymore DC10 from inflight.

Question to experts: does 27R model from ARD suffer the same fate? Thanks in advance.

Unhappy Re: IF200 DC-10 NW/KLM - The horror is back !!!

Hi Guy,s just received my Northwest DC10, reading your comment,s on crack,s that have appeared on your models, I thought I better check mine, with a mag glass, from top to bottom,As luck happen,s mine is in good condition, with no sign,s of cracking, I now have three IF200 models the other being DC9,s which I also checked, OK as well, I do agree if you are paying high prices for model,s such as If200, you should expect a good detailed finish. with no damage. stevec...

StillAir, do you store your models in cool temperatures or do you live in a cold area?

It could be that the cold makes the model expand very slightly and this might be causing the cracking of the paint.....

But I could also be totally wrong.

I have a DC-9 Air Canada, a 747 Air Canada and a DC-10 Alitalia,none of them have cracks in the paint......................................yet

Looking At The Pictures I Wonder If The Cracks Are Caused Due To Wing/Fuselage Joint Stress. It Appears The Seam Has Been Filled In, But The Putty May Not Be Strong Enough
To Prevent Cracking If There Is Wing Flex [By Handling Or shipping] Or Heat Variation From The Wing To Fuselage.

That's all you have to do! This will or will not happen. It's like the lottery, you may win some, but not all the time.

I got that plane in 1:400 from GeminiJets. Shame about your problem, it really spoils a nice model and i hope it gets fixed soon.

As far as I know, you're right about the joint stress and the putty issue. So no need to check for cracks on other areas of the fuselage, should there be any cracks, the area around the cheatline will be most severely affected.
I am quite concerned about this issue, because I was considering their latest Tristar offerings, but now that the DC-10 also has the B-747 problem, I guess all their widebodies are built the same way, and there is a high risk of getting one that will eventually give up and crack!

The cold makes the model expand??

If anything, cold temperatures might cause the paint to contract.

To date, my largest IF200 model is a 732, so fortunately I haven't experienced this problem yet.

...and you should be concerned. As described in this thread:

http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/1-200-scale-model-aircraft/65997-photos-inflight-court-line-tristar-yellow.html

I had cracks in two Court Line L-1011s recently.

Luckily, I was able to get two undamaged exmaples a few days later, however, I am not interested in an 'odd game'. My retailer immediately cancelled the remaining orders with Inflight200 (among these were four more L-1011s for me) due to this quality problem.

Several DA.C users posted their thoughts about the probable cause of these cracks. To my mind, it's a mix of both, the production of the models as well as the transport by postal service or something similar. The moulds have certain 'predetermined breaking points', i.e. the grains where two parts of a mould are joined together. Surprisingly, these grains seem to be very fragile on Inflight models (actually, I would not have expected that), so even light shocks during transport may cause a 'shearing motion' leading to a break in the mould's grains and a crack in the paint. Horrible problem, unfortunate quality issue on Inflight.

Personally, I think it's up to the manufacturer: FIX THAT PROBLEM!

Hi All,

I bought a IF200 DC-10 NW/KLM last week and I am having the same issue as well. You won't able to tell unless you use a magnifier to inspect the plane. I have returned it yesterday. I will never buy IF product anymore. IF is not cheap at all but the quality is really bad compare with Herpa, Gemini.

I wouldn't say so, Herpa and Gemini both have their bloopers. It is purely luck, if you get a healthy specimin or not. If you dig deeper into the archives here you can find that not one manufacturer is perfect.
