Default New releases NWA 757 & UPS MD-11

I guess these were technically July releases. Anyway, I got them today.

Congrats! I really like the bowling shoe livery. Out of curiosity, why does the front landing gear door read "5641" when the registration is N541US?

I'm guessing NWA always did and now Delta as well adds a 4th digit to some aircraft. The registration might be N541US but when you look at the dispatch releases, they refer to Ship 5641, etc...

I'm not completely familiar with how NWA operated though so maybe someone else will have some more insight as to how that got started. Now I get it entirely as these fleets have just become so much larger but back when all of the legacies were still on their own...who knows.

Very interesting, thanks. Makes me wonder how they decided to use the number 6 instead of some other number, too.

At Delta, every fleet type has its own range. So the 757’s might be ships 5000-5500 but the A330’s might be assigned between 6500-6999. I don’t remember the exact range but they were assigned based on type. You can still see them on Delta today. They’ll be on the nose gear and on the upper corner of the tail. If I remember correctly, all of the MD-88’s and MD-90’s followed their registrations. So N908DL was Ship 908 but I don’t remember if any of the others were like that.

Bowling shoe livery was the best in the 1990s. Wasn’t too keen on the silver NWA livery to follow in the early 2000s. A friend of mine was a flight attendant for NW (now with DL) and I asked him what he thought of the new NWA paint job. He didn’t even know!

arctic is totally correct here. Several airlines, such as Northwest, used to have the aircraft’s internal fleet number painted on the nose or the nose gear doors. Even Air Canada, for example, had those fleet numbers painted on the nose gear doors whereas the actual aircraft registration in Canada was not numeric.

Not much of a cargo collector, but pics may make me rethink that. I like that in your pics you can actually see it is brown unlike Mfg. pic that looks really dark!

Love the NW 757, and added that one as well!
