Default BA 747-400 Waves of the City (USA)

I have had a copy of a 747 with the Waves of the City (USA) tail for ages (2013 as I recall) but it was never one of the "crispest" renditions of the World Tail.

Another rainy day today, courtesy of "Henri", so I re-decaled the "Grand Union" from a couple of weeks ago and then used a set of V1 decals on yet another IF Rendezvous donor to get a better version of the USA tail.

So - here is G-BNLV with the second attempt at Grand Union in the background.

G-BNLV British Airways 747-400 Waves of the City (USA) Left Close by John A, on Flickr
G-BNLV British Airways 747-400 Waves of the City (USA) Right by John A, on Flickr
G-BNLV British Airways 747-400 Waves of the City (USA) Left Narrow by John A, on Flickr

And then with the prior copy G-BNLX..

G-BNLV and G-BNLX British Airways 747-400 Waves of the City (USA) by John A, on Flickr

I cannot decide whether or not to keep the older copy, or convert to a donor for something new..

Thanks. The older one will probably stick around for a while until I figure out a better use for it, but I do have a couple of other models that can be used as donors before I need to cannibalize that one.

Waves is one of my favourite Utopia liveries, so I would keep them both - it’s interesting to see the variations in the two tails.

All in one shot is not going to happen. No wide angle lens and space big enough. As to how many? Good question. Some are factory, some I had made for me, some I made myself.

As far as I can tell - the BA Collection is something like the list below. I had a proper inventory but lost it in a hard drive crash, I will recreate the list at some point when I get around to cleaning. A quick scan of the shelves that I can see from where I am:

747s: 38 World Tails so far in a collection of 99 BOAC/BA/BCal 747s
777s: 11 World Tails / 22 Total
767s: 8 World Tails / 18 Total
757s: 27 World Tails / 42 Total
737s: 49 World Tails / 72 Total
A320s 9 World Tails / ~20 Total (inc A319/A321)

Then there are the 727s, EMB-145s, BAe-146s which have World Tails, then the 707s, assorted turboprops etc.

That's in 1:200. I have a couple of 1:100 World Tails too.

Quite the obsession.

Great! The squeaky collector gets the grease!

Okay, PM me your email address! What retailer in the UK is close to you? If I can would like to locate one there and have it dispatched to you. Also in no hurry to get her as in my old age I've become patient. Do it on your time schedule. Really really appreciate it John as I've always admired your work!

I'm fine with that John! As I mentioned in my PM I was just going to buy a Rendezvous, and if you like will pass along the lead of where I was going to acquire from in case you want a few donors. I just need to track down the reg. from my Nairobi to Heathrow flight in May 2002. I am going to look for pics of it as I sat in the British Airways first class lounge at Nairobi for 12 hours and nothing else to do but eat and snap photos of planes!

According to Wikipedia, there were seven.

G-BNLA, G-BNLL, G-BYGA, G-BYGC, G-BYGF, G-CIVA and G-CIVB.

If you have the date, I might be able to narrow it down to a particular aircraft for you.

I gave up with F-DCAL last year. Lots of inaccuracies and very poor at answering emails… On the flip side, it encouraged me to learn how to make my own decals!

…and according to pictures on a.net, all 7 were in this scheme at that time, being repainted into Union Flag over the course of 2003

G-CIVB departed LHR for NBO on 27th April 2002. Providing it returned on the same day (i.e., departed NBO before midnight) then I think we have your aircraft!

Man o man I owe you Mattyflyer! WoooohOOOOO! Thank you, Thank you, Thank You! That is it! I sat there 12 hours (or what felt like it) starring at it and we did not depart til evening! Thunder stormed over the desert on the way out of Africa!

I finally found my discs from my high tech Sony Mavica and luckily still had an external reader. Why I only got 2 shots of her (and of course none with regs.) I'll never know! Have a bunch of other great shots of incoming/outgoing traffic I'll have to post sometime once I get all of them transferred to thumb drive.

Okay...wait! I thought of something. I checked the properties of the photo and the date and time stamp are 4/26/2002, 10:19AM.

So would the reg. be different possibly or was this the one assigned to this route!? I had the camera date set right, but time I'm not sure about, but pretty sure that was set correct as well.

If it was April 26th, then I think it was G-CIVG.

I have also been on a hunt for my BAW 747-400 flight registration number, which I have identified as G-BNLT in Kogutki Lowickie Tail. ukjohn knows that I've been trying to decal this one myself . My work has gotten in the way, so I haven't yet started on it. But once it is done (and if I don't embarrassingly butcher the livery), then I'll share some pics!

G-CIVG was on that route on 26th; G-CIVB was on that route on 27th.

IVG went from the Landor livery straight into ‘Union Flag’. As the aircraft in the photos is in the ‘Chelsea Rose’ livery, I suspect the camera date was wrong by one day - it could be a combination of incorrect time on the camera and the time difference in Kenya?

Apologies to John for the thread creep…!

Thanks, yes 2 hours ahead of UK. If it was set to eastern standard time then it would have been the 27th and since I know I did not fly out on a Friday it was the 27th and the date time stamp was reset for return. Also the photo confirms this as it is definitely Chelsea Rose! So CIVB it is!

Anyway, yes apologies to John for thread creep and thanks for your investigative help mattyflyer!

No problem on thread creep. Looks like VB did not carry the artist signature, so once I get your donor model and compare, I can complete it.

Interestingly enough, VB is represented in the picture above, but with British Asia Airlines titles.

Quite a few 747’s sported the “British Asia Airways” titles at various points. It was for political reasons, to permit flights from China to Taipei.

G-CIVB went straight from Landor into British Asia Airways (with the Chelsea Rose tail) in 1999/2000. By 2002 the titles had been repainted into just “British Airways”, without the ‘Asia’ addition.

The artist’s signature should always be on or near the tail somewhere, but it may have been missed!

Also, the country of the artwork’s origin (in this case ‘England’) sometimes appears and sometimes does not… Good reference photos from the correct date are invaluable!

The artist’s signature should always be on or near the tail somewhere, but it may have been missed!

Also, the country of the artwork’s origin (in this case ‘England’) sometimes appears and sometimes does not… Good reference photos from the correct date are invaluable!
Definitely. A lot of time googling and I cannot find a picture of VB post BAA titles with either the England or signature, so that’s the way I plan to go.

Sounds sensible to me. I’ll have a look later too, you’ve piqued my interest now!

Interestingly enough, VB is represented in the picture above, but with British Asia Airlines titles.
Sounds great John! Thank you!
